The elephant on this coin points <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Pyrrhus,<br />

B.C. 281-272, as <strong>the</strong> earliest probable date <strong>to</strong> which it can<br />

be assigned.<br />

holds trident ; beneath, waves, in which cuttle-fish. Wt. 99*4 grs.<br />

17. Lucania. Heraclea. JR. Obv. I-HPAKAEinN. Head <strong>of</strong><br />

A<strong>the</strong>na. Bev. Herakles, st<strong>and</strong>ing, holding club <strong>and</strong> lion's skin.<br />

Nos. 16-18 seem <strong>to</strong> be some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latest <strong>silver</strong> <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir respective cities.<br />

This coin may be attributed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> period ending<br />

B.C. 268.<br />

Amphitrite, veiled, seated on sea-horse ; before her st<strong>and</strong>s an Eros,<br />

drawing a bow. Wt. 65*5 grs.<br />

21. Bruttii. JR. Obv. Heads <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dioscuri, surmounted by stars.<br />

22. Bruttii. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Amphitrite, veiled ; at her shoulder,<br />

sceptre. Bev. BPETTIflN. Poseidon, naked, placing his right<br />

foot on <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> an Ionic column, <strong>and</strong> resting on sceptre. In<br />

Shortly after <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Pyrrhus, <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Greek <strong>to</strong>wns <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coasts <strong>of</strong> Bruttium ceases, <strong>and</strong> is replaced<br />

by a federal Bruttian coinage, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> above<br />

pieces are examples. This lasts until after <strong>the</strong> Hannibalic<br />

war.<br />

23. Locri. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Zeus. Bev. AOKPflN. Roma<br />

(PflMA), seated, with sword <strong>and</strong> shield, crowned by Fides<br />

(niZTIZ), who st<strong>and</strong>s before her. Wt. 109-2 grs.<br />

The obverse <strong>of</strong> this coin resembles so closely that <strong>of</strong><br />

Pyrrhus (V. C. 27) that, bearing in mind <strong>the</strong> type, it may<br />

be considered as certain that it was struck in B.C. 274,<br />

when <strong>the</strong> Eomans, after <strong>the</strong> final defeat <strong>of</strong> Pyrrhus,<br />

allowed <strong>the</strong> Locrians <strong>to</strong> retain <strong>the</strong>ir au<strong>to</strong>nomy.<br />
