The style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> Herakles on this coin is distinctly<br />
later than that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>silver</strong> <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />
type. It may be as late as <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second<br />
century B.C.<br />

entwined with diadem. Eev. KAPYZTiriN. Nike, in<br />
biga. Wt. 98-5 grs.<br />
This coin was probably struck in B.C. 191, when<br />
Antiochus was in Euboea.<br />

locks <strong>of</strong> hair hang down her neck, behind, liev. XAAKI. Eagle,<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ing with open wings, <strong>and</strong> contending with serpent. Magis-<br />
trate's name, M E N EA H . Wt. 84-8 grs.<br />
The spread fabric <strong>of</strong> this coin, <strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hair<br />
on <strong>the</strong> obverse, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> expression in <strong>the</strong> attitude <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
eagle, all point <strong>to</strong> a late period.<br />
32. Chalcis. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> queen as Hera, veiled. liev.<br />
XAAKIAEON. Demetex*, holding <strong>to</strong>rch, in quadriga; beneath,<br />
ZENOKPATHZ. The whole in oak-wreath. Wt. 254-5 grs.<br />
The head on <strong>the</strong> obverse may be an idealised portrait <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> lady <strong>of</strong> Chalcis whom Antiochus III. married <strong>the</strong>re, in<br />
B.C. 191 ; <strong>the</strong> reverse may commemorate <strong>the</strong> games held on<br />
<strong>the</strong> occasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nuptials.<br />
