78 PERIOD V. B.<br />

19. Boeotia. M. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Demeter, facing. Bev. BOmTON.<br />

Poseidon, st<strong>and</strong>ing, holding dolphin, <strong>and</strong> leaning on trident. Wt.<br />

78-1 grs.<br />

Coins <strong>of</strong> this type probably belong <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> period B.C.<br />

244-197. They appear <strong>to</strong> be later than IV. B. 22.<br />

20. A<strong>the</strong>ns. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na, wearing crested helmet,<br />

unadorned. Bev. A0E. Owl, st<strong>and</strong>ing on amphora ; on ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

side, magistrate's monogram ; <strong>the</strong> whole in olive-wreath. Wt.<br />

259 grs.<br />

Nearly all <strong>the</strong> tetradrachms which have <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> magistrates under whose authority <strong>the</strong>y were issued<br />

merely indicated by monograms, are classed as <strong>the</strong><br />

earliest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> later series <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nian money which<br />

begins about B.C. 220.<br />

21. A<strong>the</strong>ns. -51. Obv. Similar head ; helmet richly adorned with griffin<br />

<strong>and</strong> foreparts <strong>of</strong> horses. Eev. A0E - MIKION - EYPYKAEI<br />

APEZTOZ. Owl on amphora; <strong>the</strong> whole in olive-wreath. On<br />

amphora, K ; beneath, M E. Symbol in field, <strong>the</strong> Dioscuri. Wt.<br />

260 grs,<br />

Euryclides <strong>and</strong> Micion are mentioned by his<strong>to</strong>rians as<br />

TrpodTaraL <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nians in B.C. 217. The two magistrates<br />

on this coin can hardly be <strong>the</strong>se persons, though<br />

<strong>the</strong>y may be <strong>the</strong>ir descendants. The letter K on <strong>the</strong><br />

amphora is used as a numeral <strong>to</strong> indicate <strong>the</strong> tenth<br />

prytany or month during which <strong>the</strong> third magistrate, in<br />

<strong>the</strong> present instance APEZTOZ, was in <strong>of</strong>fice. The first<br />

two magistrates on <strong>the</strong>se late A<strong>the</strong>nian <strong>coins</strong> held <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

places for one year; <strong>the</strong> third was changed every<br />

prytany, about once a month. M E beneath <strong>the</strong> amphora<br />

is <strong>the</strong> mark <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> particular workshop in <strong>the</strong> mint in<br />

which <strong>the</strong> die was engraved. The accessory symbol in<br />

<strong>the</strong> field is almost always <strong>the</strong> seal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> magistrate<br />

whose name st<strong>and</strong>s first on <strong>the</strong> coin.<br />

22. A<strong>the</strong>ns. M. Similar types. Magistrates' names, EYPYKAEI<br />

-APIAPA-HPAKAEI. Wt. 258-7 grs.<br />

The Euryclides who signs this coin is probably<br />

identical with <strong>the</strong> magistrate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same name on No. 21.<br />

It will be seen, by comparing <strong>the</strong>se <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns with<br />

those which belong <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> next period, that <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> art continues slowly <strong>to</strong> deteriorate.<br />
