When <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> Pyrrhus became extinct, about B.C.<br />
238, a republican form <strong>of</strong> government was established in<br />
Epirus, which continued till <strong>the</strong> conquest <strong>of</strong> Macedonia<br />
by Eome, in 168. This coin belongs <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier period<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Epirote League. For later <strong>coins</strong>, cf. VI. B. 16, 17.<br />

These <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Acarnanian League were struck<br />
about <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third century, probably at<br />
Leucas. The style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seated Apollo on <strong>the</strong> reverse<br />
may be compared with that <strong>of</strong> Apollo on <strong>the</strong> tetradrachm<br />
<strong>of</strong> Antigonus Doson ? V. B. 6.<br />

The above <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ^<strong>to</strong>lian League belong <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
period B.C. 279-168. The obverses are imitated from<br />
<strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great. The <strong>gold</strong> stater, V. B. 14,<br />
may be compared with <strong>the</strong> contemporary stater <strong>of</strong><br />
Pyrrhus, V. C. 24.<br />
