'4. Samothrace. M. Ohv. Head <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na. Rev. ZAMO. Cybele,<br />
seated on throne ; beneath which, lion. Magisti'ate's name,<br />
MHTPHNAZ. Wt. 125-3 grs.<br />
Both Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> Lysimachus, according <strong>to</strong> L. Muller,<br />
struck money in Samothrace. As <strong>the</strong> types <strong>of</strong> this au<strong>to</strong>nomous<br />
coin are suggested by <strong>the</strong> <strong>gold</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er,<br />
it is probable that Samothrace regained its independence<br />
after <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Lysimachus, whose widow<br />
Arsinoe fled <strong>the</strong>re in 279 from P<strong>to</strong>lemy Ceraunus, <strong>the</strong>n<br />
king <strong>of</strong> Macedon.<br />
5. Macedonia. Antigonus Gonatas, B.C. 277-239. M.<br />
Ohv. Macedonian shield, in <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> which a head <strong>of</strong> Pan,<br />
hoi-ned ; behind his head, a pedum. Rev. BAZIAEOZ ANTI-<br />
TON OY. A<strong>the</strong>na Alkis, hurling thunderbolt. Wt. 265 grs.<br />
The head <strong>of</strong> Pan on <strong>the</strong> <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Antigonus refers <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
panic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gauls when Antigonus defeated <strong>the</strong>m in<br />
B.C. 277, which was followed by <strong>the</strong>ir retreat from Macedon<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> recovery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kingdom by Antigonus. The<br />
style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> figure <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na on <strong>the</strong> reverse <strong>of</strong> this coin<br />
is archaistic, not archaic.<br />
6. Antigonus Gonatas or Doson ? B.C. 229-220. Ohv. Head <strong>of</strong><br />
