This remarkable series <strong>of</strong> <strong>coins</strong> furnishes us with <strong>the</strong><br />

names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> successors <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er's generals in Bactria<br />

<strong>and</strong> India, from about B.C. 250, <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> separation<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bactria from <strong>the</strong> Seleucid kingdom under Diodotus as<br />

an independent king, down <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Antiochus <strong>the</strong><br />

Great <strong>of</strong> Syria. Agathocles, on <strong>the</strong> two specimens above<br />

described, places <strong>the</strong> heads <strong>of</strong> his predecessors, Diodotus<br />

<strong>and</strong> Euthydemus, on his coinage, but <strong>the</strong>re are o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

specimens with his own portrait.<br />

These magnificent Egyptian <strong>gold</strong> <strong>coins</strong> bear au<strong>the</strong>ntic<br />

<strong>and</strong> striking portraits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reigning monarchs, not,<br />

as is generally <strong>the</strong> case with <strong>the</strong> <strong>silver</strong> money, <strong>the</strong><br />

traditional portrait <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dynasty.
