On <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Philetaerus, Eumenes, his nephew,<br />

succeeded <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> throne. The portrait on this coin is that<br />

<strong>of</strong> his uncle, <strong>the</strong> eunuch Philetaerus.<br />

Magistrate's name, ZQZIZ. Wt. 101'6 grs.<br />

This coin is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ehodian st<strong>and</strong>ard, <strong>and</strong> is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

period during which Ephesus belonged <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> P<strong>to</strong>lemies,<br />

B.C. 258-202.<br />

Magistrate's name, TEIZYAOZ. Symbol, Aphrodite (?), ^vearing<br />

polos <strong>and</strong> holding dove. Wt. 203 grs.<br />

A fine specimen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best art <strong>of</strong> this period. The<br />

date <strong>of</strong> this coin is probably about b.c. 200. Cf. IV. A. 33.<br />

©HNON. Male figure. Demos <strong>of</strong> Marathus, seated on shields,<br />

holding aplustre <strong>and</strong> stalk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plant marathrum. In field, date<br />

33 = B.C. 279. Wt. 258 grs.<br />

The head on this coin is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period.<br />

The attitude <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> figure on <strong>the</strong> reverse is probably suggested<br />

by that <strong>of</strong> Apollo on <strong>the</strong> contemporary <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> kings <strong>of</strong> Syria.
