The head on this coin is probably that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebrated<br />

hetaira Lamia, who lived with Demetrius Poliorcetes<br />

as his wife. In her honour both A<strong>the</strong>ns <strong>and</strong> Thebes<br />

erected temples, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Lamia, perhaps <strong>to</strong><br />

flatter Demetrius, placed her head upon <strong>the</strong> coinage.<br />

Poseidon, seated, holding dolphin <strong>and</strong> trident ; on throne, Boeotian<br />

buckler. Wt. 238-4 grs. (Worn.)<br />

This tetradrachm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Attic st<strong>and</strong>ard is a specimen <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> new coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Boeotian League. It belongs <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

earlier part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third century, 288-244 B.C., <strong>and</strong> was<br />

struck at Thebes, after <strong>the</strong> res<strong>to</strong>ration <strong>of</strong> that city by<br />

Cass<strong>and</strong>er, in B.C. 315.<br />

Compare <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> Zeus on this coin with that on<br />

III. B. 18 <strong>and</strong> 33, <strong>and</strong> II. B. 29 ; <strong>the</strong> decline <strong>of</strong> style<br />

is very marked.<br />

Zeus Ithomatas, naked, advancing with eagle <strong>and</strong> thunderbolt.<br />
