The double darics form a link between tbe coinage <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Persian empire <strong>and</strong> that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> successors <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er.<br />

The presence <strong>of</strong> Greek letters or symbols upon all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

renders it hardly possible that <strong>the</strong>y can have been issued<br />

by Darius.<br />

2. Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great. M. Tetradrachm. Ohv. Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Herakles. ^ev. AAEZANAPOY. Zeus Ae<strong>to</strong>phoros ; in <strong>the</strong> field,<br />

a head in Phrygian cap ; <strong>and</strong> under throne, a triskeles (Miiller,<br />

CI. ii. Cilicia). Wt. 265 grs.<br />

3. Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great. N. Stater. Ohv. Head <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na.<br />

This coin was probably struck in B.C. 310, when <strong>the</strong><br />

throne <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er had become vacant by <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong><br />

Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Koxana in 311.<br />

4. Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great. M. Tetradrachm. Usual types.<br />

Monogram <strong>of</strong> Aradus under throne ; struck between B.C. 330 <strong>and</strong><br />

280. Wt. 265 grs.<br />

5. Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great. M. Tetradrachm. In front <strong>of</strong> Zeus,<br />

forepart <strong>of</strong> ram ; under throne, AA. Wt. 263-7 grs.<br />

The ram is <strong>the</strong> badge <strong>of</strong> Damascus, for which AA also<br />

st<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

6. Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great. M. Tetradrachm with name <strong>of</strong> Ace<br />

[Acre] in Phoenician characters <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> date 27 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seleucid era,<br />

which commenced B.C. 312. This coin was <strong>the</strong>refore struck ia<br />

B.C. 286. Wt. 258 grs.<br />

7. Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great. M,. Tetradrachm with feeding horse<br />

in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reverse. Wt. 264-4 grs.<br />

Coins <strong>of</strong> this class are frequently found at Hamadan<br />

(Ecbatana), in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood <strong>of</strong> which place were <strong>the</strong><br />

famous Nisaean Plains, where, according <strong>to</strong> Strabo, as<br />

many as 50,000 brood mares were pastured for <strong>the</strong> royal<br />

stables.
