exergue, two lions. Hev. King in chariot, driven at full speed by<br />

charioteer ; beneath, a goat, incuse. Wt. 425 grs.<br />

These large octadrachms were probably struck early in<br />

<strong>the</strong> fourth century. No. 44 is attributed by M. Babelon<br />

<strong>to</strong> a king <strong>of</strong> Sidon, circ. B.C. 394, No. 45 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong><br />

Stra<strong>to</strong> I., B.C. 374—362. They are good instances <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

stationary character <strong>of</strong> art in <strong>the</strong> East at a time when in<br />

Greece it had reached its highest point <strong>of</strong> development.<br />

46. Tyre. jiR. Obv. Melkarth holding bow, <strong>and</strong> riding over <strong>the</strong><br />

waves upon a sea-horse ; beneath <strong>the</strong> waves, a dolphin. Bev. Owl,<br />

accompanied by crook <strong>and</strong> flail, Egyptian symbols <strong>of</strong> royalty.<br />

Wt. 206 grs. (PI. 29, 36.)<br />

The coinage <strong>of</strong> Tyre commences about b.c. 450. The<br />

Bame archaism <strong>of</strong> style is apparent here as in <strong>the</strong> money<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Phoenician <strong>to</strong>wns.<br />
