It is instructive <strong>to</strong> compare <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> this coin with<br />

that <strong>of</strong> Period IV. A. No. 32.<br />

37. Rhodes. Af. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Helios, full face, his hair arranged<br />

in locks suggestive <strong>of</strong> rays, Jiev. POAION. Rose with bud, <strong>and</strong><br />

vine-spray with grapes ; <strong>the</strong> whole in incuse square. Wt. 132-6 grs.<br />

The three ancient cities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, Lindns, lalysus,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Camirus, combined in B.C. 408 <strong>to</strong> found <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong><br />

Rhodes. This coin is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> finest Greek <strong>coins</strong> which<br />

have come down <strong>to</strong> us. M. Wadding<strong>to</strong>n, on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

incuse square, places it in <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourth cent.,<br />

but it may belong <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> second half.<br />

39. Lycia. JR. 06y. Head <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na, <strong>and</strong> Lycian letter. Hev. Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> beai-ded Herakles, <strong>and</strong> Lycian inscription. Wt. 126-6 grs.<br />

The inscriptions on <strong>the</strong> Lycian <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourth<br />

century designate usually dynasts, but sometimes <strong>to</strong>wns.<br />

40. Tarsus. M. Obv. BAALTARS, in <strong>the</strong> Aramaic character.<br />

Zeus <strong>of</strong> Tarsus, seated on throne, holding sceptre. Letters <strong>and</strong><br />

grapes in <strong>the</strong> field. Hev. Aramaic inscription. Lion devouring<br />

bull ; beneath, walled city. Wt. 171 grs.<br />

The Aramaic inscription on <strong>the</strong> reverse contains <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> Mazaeus, <strong>the</strong> satrap or ruler <strong>of</strong> Cilicia, under<br />

whose authority <strong>the</strong> coin was struck. It may be translated<br />

" Mazaeus, who is over Eber-nahara, (<strong>the</strong> parts<br />

beyond <strong>the</strong> river Euphrates,) <strong>and</strong> Cilicia."<br />

41. Cyprus. A/". Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Herakles, facing, in lion's skin.<br />

Pnytagoras reigned from 351-332, <strong>and</strong> Kicocreon from<br />

331-310. During this period <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cyprian<br />

character is discontinued.<br />

44. Sidon. .51. Obv. Phoenician galley under sail. Bev. King <strong>of</strong><br />

Persia in chariot driven by his charioteer. In <strong>the</strong> field is <strong>the</strong><br />

forepart <strong>of</strong> a goat, incuse : <strong>the</strong> whole in incuse square. Wt.<br />

422-8 grs.
