<strong>and</strong> 39, <strong>of</strong> Syracuse.<br />

15. Agrigentum. M. Obv. AKRACANT02. Eagle on capital<br />

<strong>of</strong> column. Hev. Crab ; beneath which, floral scroll. Wt. 268-7 grs.<br />

This coin belongs <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period <strong>to</strong><br />

which it is here classed.<br />

16. Agrigentum. JR. Obv. Two eagles, st<strong>and</strong>ing on hare, <strong>the</strong> one<br />

about <strong>to</strong> tear <strong>the</strong> prey, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r raising its head <strong>and</strong> screaming.<br />

In field, <strong>the</strong> horned head <strong>of</strong> a young river-god ; above, ZTPATQN<br />

(magistrate's name). Bev. AKPAFANTINON. Nike driving<br />

quadriga ; above, vine-branch with grapes. Wt. 267-8 grs.<br />

Agrigentum was destroyed in B.C. 406. This coin<br />

belongs <strong>to</strong> its last years. The style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reverse may<br />

be compared with some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Syracusan <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Period III., <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> eagles on <strong>the</strong> obverse suggest a<br />

comparison with <strong>the</strong> chorus in ^sch. Agam. 115.<br />

17. Camarina. M. Obv. KAMAPINAION. Head <strong>of</strong> young Herakles<br />

in lion's skin ; in front, olive-leaf <strong>and</strong> berry. Bev. A<strong>the</strong>na<br />

driving quadriga ; she is crowned by Nike, who flies above. In<br />

exergue, grain <strong>of</strong> corn. Wt. 260-5 grs.<br />

The letter O occurs occasionally on Sicilian <strong>coins</strong> before<br />

<strong>the</strong> year 409. Camarina was destroyed in b.c. 405.<br />

18. Camarina. JR. Obv. Horned head <strong>of</strong> young river-god Hipparis,<br />

facing ; on ei<strong>the</strong>r side, a fish ; all within a border <strong>of</strong> waves. Artist's<br />

name EYAI. Bev. KAMA. Nymph Camarina, seated on swan,<br />

holding her veil as a sail, <strong>and</strong> passing over water; behind <strong>and</strong><br />

beneath, a fish. Wt. 122-8 grs.<br />

This is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most poetical <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong><br />

Evaenetus ; unfortunately, it is not in very good preservation.<br />

19. Catana. AF. 06». Head <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na, wearing helmet adorned with<br />

hippocamp. Rev. KA. Two olive-leaves with berries. Wt. 18 grs.<br />

20. Catana. M. Obv. KATANAIEON]. Head <strong>of</strong> Apollo, laureate.<br />

Bev. Quadriga ; horses walking. Wt. 266-4 grs.<br />

21. Catana. M. Obv. KATANAION. Head <strong>of</strong> Apollo or River-<br />

god Amenanus ? ; behind,'^ laurel-leaf <strong>and</strong> berry. Bev. Quadriga<br />

horses walking, crowned by Nike. Wt. 265-5 grs.<br />

These tetradrachms are subsequent <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> year e.g. 461,<br />

when <strong>the</strong> expelled inhabitants <strong>of</strong> Catana were reinstated<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Syracusans.<br />
