None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> money <strong>of</strong> this city appears <strong>to</strong> be later in<br />

date than <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century B.C.<br />

10. Cro<strong>to</strong>n. JR. Obv. Eagle perched on <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> a column <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Ionic order; in <strong>the</strong> field, a laurel-branch. Bev. QPO. Tripod,<br />

with a fillet attached <strong>to</strong> one h<strong>and</strong>le. Wt. 116 grs.<br />

This is <strong>the</strong> tripod <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pythian Apollo who was<br />

worshipped at Cro<strong>to</strong>n, in a temple called <strong>the</strong> Pythion.<br />

11. P<strong>and</strong>osia. JR. Obv. riANAOZIA (in archaic characters).<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> nymph P<strong>and</strong>osia, wearing broad diadem ; <strong>the</strong> whole in<br />

laurel-wreath. Eev. KPA0IZ (in archaic characters). River<br />

Crathis naked, st<strong>and</strong>ing, holding patera <strong>and</strong> olive-branch ; at his<br />

feet, a fish. Wt. 104-7 grs.<br />

The archaic forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letters on this coin are not<br />

consistent with <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> art, which is that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

middle or latter portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century. The inscription<br />

is <strong>the</strong>refore an afiectation <strong>of</strong> archaism.<br />

12. Ehegium. JR. Obv. Lion's scalp, facing. Eev. R EC IN OS.<br />

Bearded figure, naked <strong>to</strong> waist, seated, his right resting on staff;<br />

beneath his seat, a dog. The whole in laurel-wreath. Wt. 267-6 grs.<br />

The seated figure on this coin, like that on II. C. 4 <strong>of</strong><br />

Tarentum, may represent <strong>the</strong> Demos <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. Coins<br />

<strong>of</strong> this type may date from <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> expulsion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> despots, B.C. 461.<br />

13. Terina. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Nike, wearing across forehead diadem<br />

ornamented with honeysuckle pattern ; behind, ; <strong>the</strong> whole in<br />

laurel-wreath. Hev. TEPINAION. Winged Nike or Eirene,<br />

seated on vase, holding caduceus <strong>and</strong> bird. Wt. 119-5 grs.<br />

This is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most exquisite productions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
