A square, <strong>the</strong> four quai-ters <strong>of</strong> which are granulated. Wt. 219'5 grs.<br />

About <strong>the</strong> year B.C. 424, <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Brasidas, <strong>the</strong><br />

Chalcidian <strong>to</strong>wns generally exchanged <strong>the</strong> Attic for <strong>the</strong><br />

Phoenician st<strong>and</strong>ard. This coin <strong>of</strong> Acanthus is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

later system, after B.C. 424.<br />

9. Mende. -oR. Obv. Dionysus on ass ; in front, crow seated in a vine,<br />

<strong>and</strong> beneath ass, a dog. Bev. MENAAION. Vine with grapes.<br />

Wt. 260 grs.<br />

A tetradrachm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Attic st<strong>and</strong>ard, struck about <strong>the</strong><br />

middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century b.c. The Dionysiac types <strong>of</strong><br />

this city refer <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> famous Mendaean wine.<br />

10. Olynthus. JR. Obv. Charioteer driving'quadriga. Hev. Eagle<br />

flying, in incuse square. Wt. 255*6 grs.<br />

This is an archaic tetradrachm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> important city <strong>of</strong><br />

Olynthus, struck soon after b.c. 479, when <strong>the</strong> Bottiseans<br />

were expelled from Olynthus <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chalcidian population<br />

res<strong>to</strong>red by Artabazus. The type may commemorate<br />

an Olympian vic<strong>to</strong>ry in <strong>the</strong> chariot race.<br />

11. Alex<strong>and</strong>er I. <strong>of</strong> Macedon, b.c. 498-454. M. Obv. Man<br />

carrying two spears, st<strong>and</strong>ing on <strong>the</strong> far<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> a horse. Bev.<br />

AAEZANAPO, round an incuse square, containing a quadripartite<br />

square. Wt. 447*5 grs.<br />

An octadrachm <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er I., <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> type <strong>and</strong><br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bisaltae; struck after his<br />

acquisition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bisaltian <strong>silver</strong> mines in 480.<br />

12. Archelaus I., B.C. 413-399. M. Obv. Horseman wearing<br />

kausia <strong>and</strong> chlamys, <strong>and</strong> armed with two spears. Bev. APXEAAO.<br />
