The griffin on <strong>the</strong> <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Abdera is derived from <strong>the</strong><br />

money <strong>of</strong> Teos (see above, I. A. 24). The name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

magistrate, Smordo<strong>to</strong>rmus, is apparently Thracian.<br />

2. Aenus. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Hermes, <strong>of</strong> fine transitional style.<br />

Hev. A I N I . Goat ; in field, ivy-leaf within crescent. Wt. 248*9 grs.<br />

3. Byzantium. JR. Obv. PY. Cow st<strong>and</strong>ing on dolphin. Eev.<br />

Incuse square, granulated. Wt. 229*9 grs.<br />

The type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Byzantium is almost identical<br />

with that <strong>of</strong> those <strong>of</strong> Chalcedon on <strong>the</strong> opposite side <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Bosporus, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> which is referred <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> cow,<br />

lo, who is fabled <strong>to</strong> have crossed here from one continent<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

4. Maronea. JR. 05y. MAPON. Horse, prancing ; above, cantharus.<br />

Maron, <strong>the</strong> mythical founder <strong>of</strong> this city, was a gr<strong>and</strong>son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bacchus. Maronea was famous for <strong>the</strong> excellence<br />

<strong>of</strong> its wine.<br />

5. Seu<strong>the</strong>s I. JR, Obv. Armed horseman. Bev. ZEY0A<br />

KOMMA. (The striking <strong>of</strong> Seu<strong>the</strong>s.) Wt. 132*5 grs.<br />

Seu<strong>the</strong>s, king <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Thracian Odrysae, succeeded<br />

Sitalces B.C. 424. He was friendly <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nians, who<br />

admitted him <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> privileges <strong>of</strong> citizenship. Ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

coin <strong>of</strong> Seu<strong>the</strong>s is known, reading ZEY0A APfYPION.<br />

6. Thasos. JR. Obv. Satyr, kneeling, with a nymph in his arms.<br />

7. Thasos. JR. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> bearded Bacchus, wearing wreath <strong>of</strong><br />

ivy. Eev. 0AZION. Herakles, drawing bow. Wt. 229*1 grs.<br />

The remarkable change <strong>of</strong> fabric, as well as st<strong>and</strong>ard,<br />

in <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> Thasos, which is noticeable in comparing<br />

Nos. 6 <strong>and</strong> 7, probably <strong>to</strong>ok place about B.C. 411,<br />

when <strong>the</strong> democracy in <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> was overthrown.
