The pure archaic style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na, <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />
forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letters, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Euboic weight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coin,<br />
mark it as not much, if at all, later than b.c. 480.<br />
28. Mytilene. M. Obv. Two calves' heads face <strong>to</strong> face ; between<br />
<strong>the</strong>m a tree. Bev. Incuse square. Wt. 169 grs.<br />
This coin, in spite <strong>of</strong> its globular form, is not <strong>of</strong> archaic<br />
work ; nei<strong>the</strong>r is <strong>the</strong> metal pure. It seems, <strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>to</strong><br />
belong <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century.<br />
29. Clazomenae. JR. Obv. Forepart <strong>of</strong> winged boar. Bev. Incuse<br />
square. Wt. 108 grs.<br />
An early coin, but probably not before b.c. 480. ^lian<br />
relates that a winged Boar was said <strong>to</strong> have ravaged in<br />
ancient days <strong>the</strong> Clazomenian fields.<br />

Apollo, laureate. Bev. Lyre in incuse square. Wt. 83 grs.<br />
A coin <strong>of</strong> Colophon under Persian rule ; <strong>the</strong> weight is<br />
that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Persian siglos, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> art transi-<br />
tional.<br />
31. Ephesus. M. Obv. E4>EZI0N. Bee. Bev. Incuse square.<br />
Wt. 205 grs.<br />
This Ephesian <strong>silver</strong> stater belongs <strong>to</strong> about <strong>the</strong> middle<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century. The bee is connected with <strong>the</strong><br />
worship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ephesian Artemis, <strong>and</strong> was <strong>the</strong> badge <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> city.<br />
32. Erythrae. jJJ. Obv. Naked youth holding in a prancing horse,<br />
which is stung by a bee or wasp. Bev. EPY0. Flower in incuse<br />
square. Wt. 72 grs.<br />
A coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best transitional style ; <strong>the</strong> bee is probably<br />
only <strong>the</strong> symbol <strong>of</strong> a magistrate.<br />
33. Teos. ^. Obv. Griffin with forepaw raised ; above, a bearded<br />
mask. Bev. Incuse square. Wt. 178 grs.<br />
34. Chios. .51. Obv. Sphinx, seated before amphora ; above which,<br />
bunch <strong>of</strong> grapes. Bev. Incuse square. Wt. 235*7 grs.<br />
Chios was famed for its wine, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sphinx is a<br />
symbol <strong>of</strong> Dionysus. This stater is not <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />
currency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, but belongs <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
