Sinope was <strong>the</strong> wealthiest Greek city on <strong>the</strong> coasts <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Euxine, <strong>of</strong> which its fleet was mistress as far as <strong>the</strong><br />

entrance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bosporus. On its currency <strong>the</strong> city is<br />

likened <strong>to</strong> a sea-eagle seizing its prey in <strong>the</strong> waters.<br />

This city s<strong>to</strong>od on a small isl<strong>and</strong> or promon<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

through which <strong>the</strong> Rhyndacus flows before emptying<br />

itself in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Propontis. These <strong>coins</strong> were formerly<br />

attributed <strong>to</strong> Astacus in Bithynia. They may be a little<br />

later than B.C. 400.<br />

23. Lampsacus. EL. Obv. Half sea-horse, in vine-wreath. Eev.<br />

Incuse square. Wt. 235 grs.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Lampsacene staters " mentioned in Attic<br />

inscriptions, <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with staters <strong>of</strong> Cyzicus. About <strong>the</strong><br />

end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth century <strong>the</strong>se <strong>coins</strong> were superseded by<br />

a currency in pure <strong>gold</strong>. (See III. A. 15-19.) The seahorse<br />

is a symbol <strong>of</strong> Poseidon.<br />

24. Pordosilene. M. Obv. Head <strong>of</strong> Apollo, wearing taenia. Bev.<br />

nOPAOZIA. Lyre, in incuse square. Wt. 61 grs.<br />

Pordosilene was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> little isl<strong>and</strong>s called Heca<strong>to</strong>nnesi<br />

in <strong>the</strong> channel between Lesbos <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mainl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

25. Dardanus. M. Obv. Naked male figure on horseback. Bev.AP^P.<br />

Cock, in incuse square. Wt. 72-7 grs.<br />

The reverse <strong>of</strong> this coin bears a monogram composed <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> letters ih> on which account it has been attributed <strong>to</strong><br />

Zenis, satrap <strong>of</strong> iEolis, under Artaxerxes Mnemon. The<br />

figure on horseback has been erroneously supposed <strong>to</strong><br />

represent <strong>the</strong> famous queen Mania, his wife, <strong>and</strong> successor<br />

in <strong>the</strong> satrapy.<br />

26. Scepsis. M. Obv. ZKHYION. Forepart <strong>of</strong> Pegasus. Bev,<br />

Fir-tree <strong>and</strong> grapes. Wt. 59 grs.<br />

Scepsis had belonged <strong>to</strong> Mania, but after her death<br />

Dercyllidas <strong>the</strong> Spartan got possession <strong>of</strong> this <strong>to</strong>wn, <strong>and</strong><br />

res<strong>to</strong>red <strong>the</strong> sovereign power <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> citizens, B.C. 399.<br />

This is perhaps <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coin.
