Persians. The lion is a common type on <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Phocaean colonies.<br />

17. Bruttii. Caulonia. M. Oho. KAVA. Naked figure, holding<br />

in his raised right h<strong>and</strong> a branch, <strong>and</strong> on his outstretched left<br />

arm a small running figure with winged feet, which also holds a<br />

branch; in front, a stag, looking back. Rev. Same type incuse,<br />

but small figure wanting. Wt. 128 grs.<br />

This type has been explained by Garrucci as an impersonation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> promon<strong>to</strong>ry Cocinthus holding <strong>the</strong> Windgod<br />

Zephyrus.<br />

Same inscription. Stag ; in field, branch. Wt. 122-6 grs.<br />

The same change <strong>of</strong> fabric is noticeable here as on <strong>coins</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Tarentum, Nos. 4 <strong>and</strong> 5 ; Laiis, 8 <strong>and</strong> 9 ; Posidonia,<br />

12 <strong>and</strong> 13.<br />

19. Cro<strong>to</strong>n. M. Obv. OPO. Tripod. Bev. Same type, incuse.<br />

The earliest <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> Cro<strong>to</strong>n, an Achaean colony founded<br />

about B.C. 700, resemble in fabric those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Achsean cities, but, unlike those <strong>of</strong> Caulonia, Sybaris, &c.,<br />

<strong>the</strong> series <strong>of</strong> its money is prolonged <strong>to</strong> a late period.<br />

This federal money <strong>of</strong> Cro<strong>to</strong>n <strong>and</strong> Sybaris <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r is<br />

<strong>of</strong> considerable value as an indication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> style <strong>and</strong><br />

fabric in use before <strong>the</strong> great war which terminated,<br />

B.C. 510, in <strong>the</strong> destruction <strong>of</strong> Sybaris.<br />

22. Khegium. JR. Obv. Charioteer in biga drawn by mules. Rev.<br />

RECIN ON (retrograde). Hare. Wt. 261-3 grs.<br />

Aris<strong>to</strong>tle states that Anaxilaus, tjTant <strong>of</strong> Ehegium b.c.<br />

494-476, having gained a vic<strong>to</strong>ry at Olympia with <strong>the</strong><br />

mule-car, aTrrjvrj, struck <strong>coins</strong> for Ehegium on which <strong>the</strong><br />

mule-car was represented. This is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>coins</strong> alluded<br />

<strong>to</strong> by <strong>the</strong> philosopher.
