The Dionysiac types on <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> this city refer<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> famous Mendaean wine.<br />

; beneath, star. Bev. Incuse. Wt. 271*2 grs.<br />

This type is perhaps copied from <strong>the</strong> sacred image <strong>of</strong><br />

Poseidon which Herodotus (viii. 129) mentions as st<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

in front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city.<br />

This coin is re-struck on a tetradrachm <strong>of</strong> Acanthus.<br />

11. Dicaea. JR. Obv. Cow scratching herself. Hev. Incuse. Wt.<br />

38-3 grs.<br />

Dicaea in Chalcidice was a colony <strong>of</strong> Eretria in Euboea,<br />

whence its coin-types are derived.<br />

12. Uncertain. JR. Obv. Pegasus st<strong>and</strong>ing. Bev. Incuse. Wt.<br />

209-8 grs.<br />

13. Uncertain. -51. Obv. Pegasus galloping, with dog beneath him.<br />

These <strong>coins</strong> were both procured at Salonica, <strong>and</strong> may<br />

have been struck at <strong>the</strong> ancient Therma, before that city<br />

was incorporated in <strong>the</strong> Macedonian kingdom.<br />

The Bisaltaj, Edoni, Orrescii, Odomanti, &c., were<br />

Thracian tribes, who dwelt in <strong>the</strong> valleys <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Strymon<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Angites, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pangaean range.
