The reverse inscription <strong>of</strong> this coin is <strong>to</strong> be read<br />

kMlsHthMn = Celsitani <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tribe, not that<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chief city Osca where <strong>the</strong> coin was actually<br />

struck.<br />

2. Gallia. Massilia. M. 06^. Head <strong>of</strong> Artemis ; at her shoulder,<br />

bow <strong>and</strong> quiver. Bev. MAZZAAlHTflN. Lion. In field,<br />

monogram. Wt. 42"5 grs.<br />

Massilia lost <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> coining her own money when<br />

<strong>the</strong> city surrendered <strong>to</strong> Caesar, in B.C. 49.<br />

3. Gaulish. EL. Obv. Beardless male head. Hev. ABVD(os).<br />

Galloping horse ; above which, flying eagle ; <strong>and</strong> beneath, three<br />

circles. Wt. 105 grs.<br />

This coin is attributed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bituriges, south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Abudos is <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a chief.<br />

4. Gaulish. A/ . Obv. Laureate head. Hev. Charioteer, driving a<br />

human-headed horse ; beneath which, a prostrate figure, holding<br />

an uncertain object. Wt. 103 grs.<br />

Attributed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Aulerci Diablintes (Jublains).<br />

5. British or Gaulish. N. Obv. Beardless, laureate bust, with<br />

projecting face. Eev. Horse ; above which. Vic<strong>to</strong>ry. Various<br />

ornaments scattered about <strong>the</strong> field. Wt. 118-5 grs.<br />

Coins <strong>of</strong> this class are found on <strong>the</strong> south-eastern coast<br />

<strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> opposite coasts <strong>of</strong> France.<br />

N'os. 3-5 are anterior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Csesar; <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

all reminiscences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>gold</strong> staters <strong>of</strong> Philip <strong>of</strong> Macedon.<br />

Atrebates, were probably contemporary rulers in Hampshire<br />

<strong>and</strong> Sussex.<br />
