106 PERIOD VII.<br />
In Italy, <strong>the</strong> revolt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> confederate Italian peoples<br />
against Kome, B.C. 90-89, gave rise <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> money<br />
at <strong>the</strong>ir capital Corfinium, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y changed<br />
<strong>to</strong> Italia. In Spain, <strong>the</strong> Komans, after having for <strong>the</strong><br />
.greater part <strong>of</strong> a century permitted <strong>the</strong> various tribes <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Citerior Province <strong>to</strong> strike <strong>coins</strong> with native Iberian<br />
legends, put an end in B.C. 133 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se issues, but during<br />
<strong>the</strong> revolt <strong>of</strong> Ser<strong>to</strong>rius B.C. 80-73 <strong>the</strong>re appears <strong>to</strong> have<br />
been a temporary renewal <strong>of</strong> bronze money with bilingual<br />
(Iberian <strong>and</strong> Latin) inscriptions. In Gaul <strong>and</strong> Britain<br />
<strong>gold</strong> money was plentifully coined until each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
countries was in turn subdued by Rome.<br />
The only o<strong>the</strong>r non-Roman <strong>coins</strong> were those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
African kingdoms, Numidia <strong>and</strong> Mauretania.<br />
The coinage at Rome itself, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Roman generals<br />
during <strong>the</strong>ir various campaigns, calls for few remarks ;<br />
its chief value is his<strong>to</strong>rical <strong>and</strong> chronological.<br />
In point <strong>of</strong> style <strong>the</strong> <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> this century<br />
exhibit a marked decline. Those struck in Asia maintain<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir superiority, <strong>and</strong> are not without some artistic merit,<br />
especially in portraiture ; those <strong>of</strong> Mithradates <strong>the</strong> Great,<br />
<strong>of</strong> Cleopatra, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Marcus An<strong>to</strong>nius, being among <strong>the</strong><br />
most remarkable.
