for voting by ballot, B.C. 137.<br />

Female figure, in biga ; beneath, elephant's head. Wt. 59 grs.<br />

The elephant's head was, doubtless, at <strong>the</strong> time, a sufficient<br />

indication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moneyer by whom <strong>the</strong>se denarii<br />

were issued.<br />

The issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> quinarius bearing <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old<br />

vic<strong>to</strong>riatus was ordered by <strong>the</strong> Lex Clodia, circa b.c. 104.<br />

This moneyer belonged <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient patrician family<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cluilii.<br />
