This Cnaeus Gellius may have been <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rian who<br />

wrote in <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seventh century <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City.<br />

The mark <strong>of</strong> value XVI occurs only on a small number<br />

<strong>of</strong> denarii struck between circa B.C. 150 <strong>and</strong> 125, <strong>and</strong> again<br />

This Sextus Pompeius was probably an ances<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

triumvir.<br />

C . AVG(urinus). Column, surmounted by statue. To <strong>the</strong><br />

capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> column are attached two bells ; at its base are two<br />

lions' heads, <strong>and</strong> ears <strong>of</strong> corn. On one side st<strong>and</strong>s a man holding<br />

a loaf <strong>and</strong> patera, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r an augur with his lituus. Wt.<br />

60-5 grs.<br />

This type represents <strong>the</strong> monuments erected before <strong>the</strong><br />

Porta Trigemina, B.C. 439, <strong>to</strong> L. Minucius, <strong>to</strong> commemorate<br />

his successful attempt <strong>to</strong> reduce <strong>the</strong> price <strong>of</strong> com.<br />

The above <strong>coins</strong>, Nos. 8-14, may be attributed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

period between b.c. 150 <strong>and</strong> 125.<br />

Livy mentions a M. Aburius as tribune in B.C. 187 <strong>and</strong><br />

prae<strong>to</strong>r in 176. This man was probably an ances<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

M. Aburius Geminus, who struck this coin.<br />
