The first magistrate on this coin was afterwards Antiochus<br />

IV. <strong>of</strong> Syria. In <strong>the</strong> year b.c. 176 he was in<br />

A<strong>the</strong>ns. The symbol, an elephant, clearly refers <strong>to</strong> him,<br />

<strong>and</strong> not <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> second magistrate.<br />

Certain Cretan cities, for commercial reasons, adopted<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir coinage A<strong>the</strong>nian types during <strong>the</strong> second century<br />

B.C., at <strong>the</strong> time when <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nians supplied <strong>the</strong><br />

currency for <strong>the</strong> great central market at Delos, which had<br />

<strong>the</strong> monopoly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trade with <strong>the</strong> East.<br />
