coin (year 38) cannot be referred with certainty <strong>to</strong> any<br />

era, <strong>and</strong> is probably a regnal year.<br />

This is a remarkable portrait <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last Greek king<br />

<strong>of</strong> Macedon. Zoilus, whose name occurs frequently on<br />

Macedonian <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> this period struck at diiferent mints,<br />

was probably superintendent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

kingdom.<br />

The right <strong>of</strong> coining <strong>silver</strong> was conferred by <strong>the</strong> Eoman<br />

senate on Macedonia, at that time divided in<strong>to</strong> four<br />

regions, in B.C. 158. This is a coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first region.<br />

12. Macedonia. M, Similar, but in addition, LEG(atus), <strong>and</strong> a<br />

h<strong>and</strong> holding an olive-branch. Wt. 258-7 grs.<br />

The execution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two <strong>coins</strong>, which were issued<br />

after Macedonia was made a Eoman province, in B.C. 146,<br />

is more careful than that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preceding <strong>coins</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

regions.<br />

The Thessalian Confederacy, formed under Roman<br />

auspices after <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Cynoscephalae, in B.C. 196,<br />

lasted till B.C. 146.<br />

These <strong>coins</strong> were probably struck after <strong>the</strong> separation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ^Enianes from <strong>the</strong> iE<strong>to</strong>lian League, in B.C. 168.
