The Althoff Group – a success story
For over 20 years, the name Althoff has been synonymous with hospitality, stylish
design and excellent service, combined with outstanding food. The fine cuisine has
over the years become an impressive and unique selling point for this owner-run
hotel business. Proprietor and managing director Thomas H. Althoff personally
vouches for the quality of the 15 hotels run under the Althoff banner, steering the
fortunes of this Cologne-based group with passion and dedication. His vision:
“People are entitled to dream… and sometimes they are also entitled to encounter
these dreams in real life.”
How it all began
Thomas H. Althoff was born in 1953 in Wuppertal, where he studied business. He
embarked on his hotel career at the age of 21, taking over an 80-bed hotel in
Aachen. In 1980 he moved to Best Western Hotels (Germany) as director for quality
assurance, membership development, organisation, group purchasing and finance.
He set up the consultancy Althoff Beratungs- und Betreuungsgesellschaft mbH in
1984 and took over his first hotel: the Hotel Regent in Cologne.
Althoff Hotel & Gourmet Collection
The Group’s five-star hotels are run under the Althoff Hotel & Gourmet Collection
brand name. They provide a unique link between luxury hotels and Michelin-starred
cuisine. The collection of individual luxury hotels includes the Grandhotel Schloss
Bensberg and the Schlosshotel Lerbach in Bergisch Gladbach, the Hotel Fürstenhof
in Celle, the Hotel am Schlossgarten in Stuttgart, the Elegant Nature Resort Seehotel
Überfahrt in Rottach-Egern, the St. James’s Hotel and Club in London and the Villa
Belrose in Gassin/St. Tropez. In addition to these, the Ameron Collection hotel brand
operates in the upper four-star category.
Architecture and design, service and fine cuisine
There are three strands to the Althoff Hotel & Gourmet Collection’s corporate
philosophy: architecture and design, service and fine cuisine. Visiting any of the
hotels, it soon becomes evident that this concept has been borne in mind in every
establishment.
Exceptional architecture combined with discerning design is typical of hotels in the
Althoff Hotel & Gourmet Collection. The buildings are not at all standardised: the
focus is always on individuality and style.
Without doubt, the soul of any hotel is its employees, so it is no surprise that there is
a particular emphasis on service, training and continuing education.
“It is essential to live out our corporate philosophy and anticipate our guests’ every
wish with great pride in the work we do. Our employees focus wholeheartedly on their
work and satisfy guests with their honest and discreet service while managing to
convey their own enthusiasm,” explains Thomas H. Althoff.
Fine dining is the third strand to the concept behind the Althoff Hotel & Gourmet
Collection. Thomas H. Althoff consistently ensures that outstanding food is available
in each of his five-star hotels. And with great success: twelve Michelin stars have
een awarded to the seven hotels in 2011, demonstrating unique culinary expertise
in the international hotel business.
This special combination means guests are offered a very high level of quality,
comfort and luxury. It is of utmost importance that every guest be treated as an
individual, creating feel-good moments so that their hotel stay becomes a “living
experience” that endures.
The Ameron Hotel Collection
The hotels in the Ameron Collection and Ameron Edition distinguish themselves by
offering a combination of modern, functional design and special service. “These
business hotels and boutique hotels are an ideal extension to our hotel portfolio,
allowing all kinds of requirements and demands to be taken into account,” says
Althoff. Positioned in strategically well-chosen areas and in important financial
destinations, these hotels offer the very best conditions for their guests to work
creatively and effectively. Once again, this is what the Althoff name stands for.
