Prior to the nineteenth century,
short stories were not generally regarded
as a distinct literary form.
Despite this (act. shcrt fiction b nearly
Some of the first written short stories
were those of the Bary*.unians and
the Canaanite* inscribed in cuneiform
on clay during the second rnilknniuTn
B.C. At the same time, short Egyptian
narratives were beta* composed
on papyrus.
the Old Testament also bokh some
of the oldest and most famous short
stories In the world.
The early Greeks added a new di*
raulon to short story writing by
nuking pfpiilir moralizing injure*
stories, many of which were later col*
lected as "Aesop's Fables." The c rly
Greek rtrmanccs also frequently
At the time ui the Middle Ages.
there was an iacreatcd interest in iN;
eighteenth centuries became of the
The popularity of the short narrative
was regained in tfce nineteenth
cenrary with the birth of the modem
short stury.
As 9 writing style, the short story
b coroantly changing In addition to
the many obvious stylistic differ*
enccs. this b one of the major differ*
enccs between poetry and the short
story. Although there are many types
of poetry, as a style of writing, poetry
has many more iet way* than the
short story.
Also, where they are many different
rype* of poetry such as the epic,
limerick, nursery rhyme, and sonnet,
there a e no specific classifications of
short stories.
The people at Lowell who write
Graffiti
"It has unistic aspects but it can
also be really a social way of cortv
Ones Bojdanoff like graffiti? "It's
I've tried to clean and bcauttf) the
What about the other side of tbc
story? What about tbr graffiti crtists
One active graffiti artist on earnpos
informed The £*t*/U that he views
graffiti as simply uttber form of artistic
self-expression.
"It's just a way for writers to express
"If you've got a good Inokitg
The people who write poetry do so
for far more f.*rona) reawns than
those who write short stories.
As Ktucr Vicki Sullivan toted.
"My best poetry comes wit of really
stfocig craotiooi. I led tfwt it helps
me grt cry fceliogs out into the oocj
Many poets feel that their work b
so personal 'Jut they do not waitf to
rove it fttblishcd.
"When I write paetry it b usually
Kim Griffith.
"There U also the frar that nut
