THE GREENS 

The Hornsby Kuring-gai Greens 

hosted a public forum on Sunday 

26th August. Speakers included 

lawyer David Shoebridge MLC, 

Greens spokesperson for Planning, 

and Louise Crabtree of the UWS 

Community Economies Unit. 

Shoebridge alerted the Hornsby 

community to the destructive 

planning legislation proposed by the 

NSW Government’s Green Paper. 

Then, in a community spirited move 

entirely independent of the Greens, 

audience members—including 

contending candidates—decided to 

start an independent, non party 

political local group to oppose the 

changes. Some of these damaging 

proposals are: no resident right to 

object to close-by developments; 

no councillor oversight of 

developments; developer only 

rights to appeal unfavourable 

zoning decisions; removal of 

key environmental and heritage 

protections; existing residents to 

pay levies for new infrastructure 

needs generated by developments; 

and “Enterprise Zones” with no 

planning controls, potentially LGA 

sized. 

On a brighter note, Dr Crabtree 

showed inspiring examples of 

Australian housing projects with 

medium-low mixed densities 

in beautiful village settings, 

incorporating affordability and 

environmental sustainability 

features. We really can team vision 

COUNCIL ELECTION 2012 

with practical innovations for a 

healthy Hornsby community. 

But won’t these legislative 

changes obliterate such 

creativity? 

The Greens candidates pointed 

to Australia’s history of successful 

community action against such 

heavily developer weighted 

planning legislation. Developers 

do not have the social licence to 

destroy communities. Communities 

can say “No” and a well informed, 

well prepared community can have 

real power. Greens councillors 

will follow Dr Crabtree’s talk with 

many more on ecocity design, 

cycleway design, carpooling plans, 

structuring community development 

finance, and much more. To 

advance these innovations, Greens 

councillors will also equip Council 

to host democratic participation for 

residents, incorporating all-locality 

representatives. These will not be 

appointed, but authorised by grassroots 

community agreed processes.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE RESIDENTS OF HORNSBY SHIRE 

Before you vote on 8th September to elect a Mayor & Councillors to Hornsby 

Council, consider these issues and the questions that candidates should answer. 

Hornsby Quarry: 

Hornsby Shire rate-payers have paid tens of millions of dollars compensation to CSR for the empty quarry. 

Hornsby Council now proposes to fill the quarry, which could take up to 20 years of heavy truck movements 

at 10 minute intervals every week day, turning Hornsby & the surrounding residential roads into an industrial 

quagmire. 

If (re)elected, to council, will you properly investigate & present other viable alternatives, such as the 

“stable-lake” option for community input? 

Hornsby Shire Housing Strategy: 

Hornsby Council has vigorously pursued, against residents’ wishes, 5 storey high-rise precincts in inappropriate 

locations such as neighbourhood villages, bushfire prone areas & areas of limited escape in the event of a 

catastrophe, i.e. a bushfire. 

If (re)elected will you actively seek to prevent such precincts from being developed as high rise? 

Section 94 funds Developer Contributions: 

$6.3 million of compulsory developer contributions for public facilities (S94 funds) were spent by the council 

on a little used Equestrian centre in Galston. 

If (re) elected how will you treat the allocation Section 94 funds to maximise the benefit for the 

majority of rate-payers of Hornsby Shire? 

Councillors representing their community: 

The present council has a record of not listening to their constituents and not properly addressing the 

concerns of residents of the shire, as highlighted above. 

If (re)elected, how would you propose to ensure that the council and councillors truly represent the 

wishes of their community? 

Council’s agenda: 

Hornsby Council has inconvenienced & angered the shire’s residents with issues such as the closure of 

Hornsby pool, the demolition of the CWA building, the dilapidated state of the Hornsby pedestrian overhead 

bridge, the Brooklyn pump-out saga and many others. 

If (re)elected will you seek to ensure that the council’s policies and actions are more responsive 

to the wishes of the community? 

Council Rates & Councillors’ salaries: 

Hornsby shire rates: $1,138 p.a.* but Ku-ring-gai shire rates: $697 p.a.* Not withstanding this, Hornsby 

councillors have recently awarded themselves pay increases to the maximum allowable amount. 

*Based on block of land valued at $500,000 

If (re)elected to council how do you propose to reduce our unacceptably high rates? 

Don’t forget that we get to exercise our democratic right only once every 4 years! 

Motherhood statements are not enough; Councillors need to know that they will 

be held accountable throughout their term!

LOCAL PRESCHOOLS SAVED

Early Wednesday morning I received the news that we 

have all been waiting for…. 

Ray Williams our local MP rang to inform me that the Minister for 

Education, Mr Adrian Piccoli MP had made an official announcement in 

writing regarding the “Save our Preschools” Campaign. 

The Minister writes: “I am advised that the Department of Education and 

Communities, in consultation with the service provider for the Forgotten 

Valley Mobile Preschool, recently reviewed the enrolment data that was 

provided by Forgotten Valley Mobile Preschool and which the Department 

used to calculate its funding allocation for the 2012/13 financial year. Data 

inconsistencies were discovered and have now been corrected. I am 

pleased to advise that the funding allocation for this service for 2012/13 

can now be maintained with a slight increase”. 

It is fabulous news and a huge step forward for the preschools 

and our entire community. It proves that with the right motivation, 

persistence and a “never give up attitude” we can as a united front, 

achieve almost anything. 

Thank you for all your support, letters and encouragement. My family 

has been a huge help with all of them filling in the gaps and taking over 

responsibilities that I’ve had to let slide whilst spending time working on 

this campaign. 

The Muster was, I believe a fantastic wind up to what we have achieved. 

At least 6 families registered their interest in the preschools and we have

Along with some 200 others, I attended a funeral service on Thursday 26 

July 2012 at St Mark’s Anglican Church Berowra for fellow ex-Navy local, 

‘Bill’ William Arthur Foster OAM of Berowra. 

Unfortunately his passing was another shock to me as I had already in 

July attended the funeral services of 3 other OAM prominent residents 

of Hornsby Shire: Harry Edwards (Federal MP for Berowra, from West 

Pennant Hills), Harry Fox (RSL & community stalwart, from Berowra 

Heights), and then Jack Goyen (Scouting stalwart, from Asquith). 

I had met Bill on many occasions over the years through RSL and other 

activities and at age 95 we were all sad to see our WW2 Navy veteran sail 

off on his final voyage. 

“As a preacher I would also love to speak to Bill once more,” said Rev Ian 

Millican of St Mark’s, who conducted the funeral service. 

“I hadn’t seen Bill since his and Elaine’s 70th wedding anniversary in 

March this year– and I would have liked to have been able to speak to him 

once more before he died.” 

Bill served in the defence of our nation during World War 2 as a Stoker 

(Marine Engineer) in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), serving in Australia, 

Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. Bill joined the Navy from Berowra on 6 

April 1942 (Official Number S6339) and served until 5 March 1946. 

His initial training was at Flinders Naval Depot, east of Melbourne, then 

a shore posting to HMAS Penguin in Sydney Harbour and the depot 

ship HMAS Platypus. His sea postings included HMA Ships Westralia, 

Australia, Moresby, Adele and Hobart. 

Bill was a founding member of the Berowra RSL Sub Branch in 1947 and 

served in many positions as well as Treasurer for over 30 years. Bill was

commitment and example. Bill went on to become the Patron of the Sub 

Branch. 

Both Bill and his wife Elaine spent many years in serving the community 

of Berowra through the RSL and many other organisations becoming well 

known and loved. 

Bill carried out his unsung activities with diligence and dedication for many 

years and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2006 

for service to the welfare of ex-service personnel, their families; and to the 

community of Berowra.

of the RSL who stand with me here,

Rod had earlier that week on Monday 23 July attended a memorial service 

for Major Neil Maitland (Rtd) late of Galston, who had passed away the 

previous week age 62 years. Neil’s service was conducted by his father, 

Major General Gordon L Maitland AO OB RFD ED, of North Turramurra. 

Bill’s parents John ‘Jack’ Foster and Daisy (nee Clarke) lived at Berowra. 

Bill was born at Hurstville on 5 March 1917 and attended Berowra School, 

now the Berowra District Hall opposite St Mark’s Church (cnr Berowra 

Waters and Crowley Rds). 

Bill had two younger brothers Joe and Ernie (both now deceased). 

After leaving school Bill went to work for a boat builder at Palm Beach. 

When after 3 weeks of not being paid, Bill asked for his money and the 

reply was - “You should be paying me for what I am teaching you.” Bill 

walked out, never to return. 

Bill then applied to be a refrigeration mechanic apprenticeship and was 

one of four chosen from 1,200 applicants. 

When his Dad died Bill helped his Mum run the Foster’s family General 

Store on the Pacific Hwy at Berowra. It was also a Post Office, a petrol 

station and handled produce from the railway siding. 

Bill had first met his wife-to-be Elaine Davis on Berowra station when 

her family arrived from the Central Coast to live in Berowra. They were 

married on 14 March 1942 and spent their honeymoon at Manly. They built 

their family home in Goodwyn Rd Berowra and had 3 children Stephen, 

Gregory, and Merran. 

After his WW2 Naval service Bill worked as a storeman for the NSW 

Railways involving imports and exports and rolling stock, retiring in 1982. 

In late 1990 Bill was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was not 

expected home for Christmas. The ‘old sea dog’ however overcame the 

odds and lived for another 22 years to the ripe old age of 95. In September 

2011, Bill & Elaine moved to Mark Donaldson VC House at the RSL 

Rowland Village in Galston. 

Bill and Elaine were parishioners of St Mark’s Anglican Church and icons 

of the Berowra community. Besides his RSL commitments Bill was a life 

member of the Berowra Cricket Club, a Justice of the Peace life member, a 

St John Ambulance member, a founding member of the Berowra Bendigo 

Bank (see photo, top right), and a member of M.U.I.O.O.F (Manchester 

Unity Independant Order of Oddfellows) where members contributed for 

common benefits of health and welfare.

“Bill is my second cousin,” said Don of Mt Colah (ex Asquith). “My mother 

Eileen Foster Wall was the daughter of Ada Foster (Mrs Richards) the 

sister of Bill’s father John ‘Jack’ Foster.” 

“I lost my Dad when I was 19 and Bill became my Dad. He was one you 

could always rely on. He was an all-round good bloke,” said Jeannette 

Foster (nee Dore), wife of Bill’s son Stephen, in her eulogy. 

Bill’s granddaughter Kelly Foster read ‘When I am Gone’ and grandson 

Kyle read ‘We are our Father’s Garden’. Both spoke of their grandfather’s 

love and encouragement, always willing to listen and help in any way. 

“He was a great listener and tolerant, a handyman, gave good advice, was 

patient and willing to help out,” added Bill’s adult children Stephen (from 

Mayers Flat), Gregory (Jindabyne), and Merran Husband (Berowra Hts). 

The funeral director service was Albert & Myer of Thornleigh led by 

Rebecca Williams and accompanied by her associates: Jonathan Bennett, 

Greg Flemming and Luigi Russo. The organist for the service was 

Margaret Clarke of Berowra. 

Bill is survived by his wife Elaine, 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great 

grandchildren. 

Elaine and family thank you all for your friendship over the years, 

your kind words, prayers and support. 

When the ‘Last Post’ was played at Bill’s funeral service, the whole gathering, without being 

asked, rose from their seats and stood in memory of our Bill and the service he gave to our 

country and community. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day. 

Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very near.

North Shore police numbers have 

been boosted with an extra five 

officers allocated to the Ku-ring-gai 

Local Area Command according to 

Premier and Member for Ku-ring-gai 

Barry O’Farrell said. 

“I am delighted to have these new 

officers serving our community and 

I wish them well in their careers,” Mr 

O’Farrell said. 

He criticised the NSW Opposition 

for misleading police numbers, most 

recently by claiming they were down 

because of the formation of the new 

Police Transport Command and 

a dedicated Traffic and Highway 

Patrol Command. 

“The officers in the Traffic and 

Highway Patrol Command and 

the Transport Command are now 

under the leadership of dedicated 

commands as opposed to the Local 

Area Commands,” Mr O’Farrell said. 

“They haven’t vanished in a puff of 

smoke, as the Opposition would 

have Bush Telegraph Weekly 

readers believe. 

Both the Traffic and Highway 

Patrol Command and the Transport 

Command will continue to support 

Local Area Commands but the 

new structure will enhance the 

capabilities of the Police Force. 

The Transport Command is 

currently staffed by more than 300 

officers from local commuter crime 

units, with the command actively 

increasing its numbers until it 

reaches 610 officers by December 

2014. 

The 2012-13 state Budget includes 

$178m in recurrent funding over the 

next four years to bring the NSW 

Police Force to a record strength of 

16,356 officers by June 2014. 

“We have record police numbers 

in our State and it’s disappointing 

the Opposition tried to mislead 

Bush Telegraph readers by claiming 

numbers are down – nothing is 

further from the truth,” said Mr 

O’Farrell.

I married a Berowra girl in the same 

year. I started my business in this 

great suburb in 2001 and have been 

well supported by the community in 

my family life, business, council and 

my involvement in Apex and running 

Berowra Woodchop for the last 6 

years returning a lot of money back 

to the community. 

These are all things you are well 

aware of, you printed 2 letters in 

your paper that you well know not 

to be true! 

Both the letters are not even close 

to true and contain outright lies, I 

really think that it is about time you 

came clean with your readers and 

corrected the record. I should not 

have to point these things out to 

your readers as I suspect that most 

of them have already realised that 

you have a family member and her 

employer in Mick Gallagher’s Team. 

What Toms letter says, is that I 

removed turf wickets from the 

community which is true, what 

he will not tell readers is that 

Hornsby had 11 of them, the cost to 

ratepayers to maintain turf wickets 

was $780 pa per player I think 

other sports would like that kind of 

sponsorship. 

The 2 wickets that were removed 

were replaced with astro turf and 

are still in use and were not in use 

by Hornsby Junior cricket players, 

I asked Nathan Tilbury prior to 

voting at the council meeting and all 

councillors voted for it with me. 

I met with Tom Richmond, Bob 

Davis, Steve Russell and Max 

Woodward about the sullage matter 

over coffee and with Tom on 3 other 

occasions in my shop. 

Jerome’s claims are bizarre as I 

was not on council when Berowra

other letters with claims that are 

not true in the last 12months. As 

an editor you have the right to print 

whatever you want but to do it in the 

full knowledge that it is untrue is a 

disgrace. 

All I have done is to act in the best 

interests of our community, I couldn’t 

vote for turf wickets that were mainly 

hired by the Ryde cricket people, 

I couldn’t vote to have no parking 

at the new Hornsby pool, I couldn’t 

vote for a pool for Berowra that was 

for learn to swim only and wouldn’t 

serve everybody. Instead I voted for 

things that were for the benefit of all 

residents, like filling Hornsby Quarry, 

getting a great new Child care 

centre at Asquith, keeping high-rise 

outside Hornsby CBD to a bare 

minimum, New netball courts, major 

road repairs, upgrades to Ovals, 

footpaths in Brooklyn and a review 

of all Council Services that resulted 

in over 60 positions at council being 

removed and saved ratepayers $6 

million dollars without affecting the 

services to the community. 

I did these things without being a 

member of a political party whilst 

being surrounded by 6 liberals, 

2 greens and one labour party 

member.

Meeting of Hornsby Shire Council 

held on 10/12/2003, Steve Russell

acquisition of the 

Hornsby Quarry 

site, and on 9 July

may have voted 

with the Liberals 

against Labor and

past, he is open and 

consistent about his beliefs and 

policies, which is more than can 

be said for the Liberal Party. If the 

Liberal Team is prepared to release 

such information, one wonders if 

they can be trusted to manage the 

Council for the next four years.

All around us these days, our 

airspace is rent by the crunching 

and grinding noises of trees being 

destroyed. 

With them are destroyed food 

sources and decades grown nesting 

holes for our cherished and unique 

Australian fauna. These deserve

against life, limb and livelihood. 

The new Hornsby Council Tree 

Preservation Order is in urgent 

need of reform. 

To allow unregulated destruction 

of trees on a contrived criteria that, 

even through they are native, they 

are not endemic to the area, flies in 

the face of the demonstrated value 

of non-endemic natives in providing 

much needed protection, structure 

and food sources for native fauna. 

Greens councillors intend to restore 

proper protections to our fauna and 

flora.

Dear BT, 

Andrew Tuft (TBTW23/8) asks if the 

long queue along Berowra Waters 

Road is normal. 

I can travel to Gordon on a Sunday 

in the time it takes me to travel 

from the Cross Roads in Berowra 

Heights to the Pacific Highway 

in the morning. Sports carnivals 

at the oval on The Gully Road 

create a nightmare for drivers trying 

to exit Berowra, so what will it be 

like when we have to evacuate in 

times of catastrophe, such as a 

major bush fire? The time it would 

take for all vehicles to exit Berowra 

could leave many of us vulnerable. 

The suburb has been allowed to get 

too big. 

During the bushfire emergencies 

in Berowra since I came to live 

here 40 years ago, on two of these 

occasions I have witnessed long 

periods of zero water pressure, 

presumably when the tankers 

have been drawing water from 

the reservoir, leaving no water for 

our hoses to put out spot fires. 

However, our water reservoir in 

Berowra Waters Road has not been 

increased in size in that time. 

In the coming elections we need 

representatives who will stand up 

for our safety and preservation. 

We need councillors who will put 

our safety first.

spoken resented this intrusion, 

as we do not need to be told who 

to vote for. Also, I am concerned 

as to who pays for this type of 

politicking - I hope it is solely the 

candidate and not the residents and 

ratepayers of Hornsby. 

In fact the result of this intrusion will 

be that I will not vote for you and I 

will encourage everyone else who 

has been a victim of this nonsense 

to NOT vote for you either.

The carefully researched letter from 

Dr M Reed (TBTW 9/8/2012) is a 

wake-up message to all voters who 

remain horrified at the loss of the 

CWA building and the part of the 

public park it occupied. 

I’ve yet to hear from anyone who 

believes it had anything to do with 

neglecting the Hornsby Pool until 

long after it became dangerous, or 

delaying building a new pool. Now 

we learn it was just the start of 

worse to come. 

It is so easy to assume that every 

election candidate asking for your 

vote is motivated by concern for the 

best interests of all voters and their 

families, especially if you believe 

the advertisements left in your 

letter-box without asking if anything 

in them is true. Would you vote 

for a total stranger with a familiar 

name? 

Do you like the way the council has 

used the money you were obliged 

to pay, if you invested your savings 

in a home unit? There were very 

good reasons for section 94 before 

it was changed. Do you agree that 

the councillors you voted for should 

now sell the open space you paid 

for? 

You can see for yourself where 

some of your money went: Look at 

the park it paid for at the NE corner 

of Burdett Street and Salisbury 

Road. 

Does it look as if your council has 

cared for it with the money you 

provided? 

Then take another look at the rest 

of the Dr M Reed letter. 

Before you cast your vote on 8 th 

September, you still have time 

to pause and ask yourself a few 

questions about everyone who 

is standing for re-election as a 

member of the council which has 

made decisions for you in the past 

four years. 

Did you, for example, vote for a 

candidate who promised you four 

years ago, that the Berowra Pool 

would be built by now? Or that your 

council would honour its duty to 

respect the long-held tradition to 

keep Hornsby Park and the CWA 

building safe? 

Are you able to ask your candidate 

a few questions, face-to-face? 

You vote doesn’t end with your first 

choice. Any preference you mark 

can become your vote. 

After the 8 th September, (YES, next 

week!) it will be too late to start 

asking questions!

$2.3 million and $6.3 million for an 

equestrian centre used by less than 

500 residents. 

Firstly, Hornsby Council was forced 

into the acquisition of the former 

CSR owned quarry by a Court 

decision, NOT by any vote of its 

councillors. The court decision 

imposed a valuation determined 

by the NSW Valuer General at the 

time and the eventual liability of the 

Council (and the Shire generally) 

to pay this amount arose out of 

contractual obligations entered into 

decades ago. 

Secondly, there has only been one 

(1) Labor Councillor, Bruce Mills, 

on Hornsby Council for this last 

term (2008 to the present) who has 

been both steadfast and vociferous 

in his opposition to the Galston 

equestrian centre as were his Labor 

predecessors on the Council from 

2004 to 2008, Councillors Janelle 

McIntosh, Mark Lyons and the late 

Jan Dekker. This is a matter of 

public record and has also been 

well reported by local media in 

recent years.

Commemorating the life 

of HENRY LAWSON 

(90th anniversary of his passing) 

...Story by Andrew Guild 

September is the 90th anniversary of the passing of the writer Henry 

Lawson who died on 2nd September 1922. 

Henry was born in a tent on the Grenfell goldfields of New South Wales 

(17 June 1867) and grew up around Pipeclay, Eurunderee and Mudgee. 

From such small and isolated bush beginnings emerged a giant of Australian 

literature, an author who was to paint upon the canvas of our national culture 

with brilliant literary brushstrokes that illustrated life in the Australian bush in 

such a way that his writings resonated with people around the nation. 

Sometimes Lawson could also paint a picture that was humorous, such as in 

“The Loaded Dog” and “The Captain of the Push”, but on occasion he also 

gave a somewhat melancholy view of life in the country, as expressed in the 

“Ballad of the Drover” and “The Union Buries its Dead”. 

He wrote of life in the country in poems like “The Fire at Ross’s Farm” and 

“Andy’s Gone With Cattle” and expressed his concern for the downtrodden 

and battlers: “The Army of the Rear” and “Faces in the Street”. His works 

were enjoyed by millions of Australians during his life-time, as they are 

appreciated by many today. 

Henry Lawson gave to our country an ever-lasting present, a gift that will 

always keep on giving, in a wide-ranging body of literary works that have 

recorded for posterity the way of life of Australians of a previous generation.

The male is expected to attend 

Hornsby Local Court on cultivation 

charges at a date yet to be set.

called to several parties that had

960 students showcase 

the North Shore Catholic 

Schools Choral Festival 

Students from St Bernard’s Catholic School, Berowra Heights and St 

Patrick’s Catholic School, Asquith unleashed their inner performer when 

they recently took to the stage for the Australian Arts Alive (a3) Choral 

Festival together with fellow students at Catholic primary schools across 

Northern Sydney. The innovative program of music and movement 

workshops culminated in a musical spectacular, involving all 960 

students in years 5 and 6. 

The Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Broken Bay has entered into 

a partnership with a3-Australian Arts Alive, a branch of the Australian 

School of the Performing Arts which is best known for the Australian 

Girls Choir and their involvement in the QANTAS “I still call Australia 

home” campaign. 

St Bernard’s Principal, Mrs Luanna Fletcher, said the a3 program was a 

magnificent experience for the students. 

“The children worked with the a3 team each fortnight last term in their 

own school, practising their performance items and having a great 

time engaging with the a3 staff,” she said. “It is so energising to see 

every student from Years 5 and 6 actively involved in music, singing and 

acting out the parts.” 

The workshops included popular and sacred songs, fun and high energy 

dance routines, as well as games and activities to develop the students’ 

performance skills, confidence and teamwork.

SUCCESS FOR LOCAL 

SWIMMER 

The Berowra RSL Sub-Branch’s Jim and Roberta Hughes Award for 

2012 has been awarded to Isabel Cant, a year 6 student at 

Mt Kuring-gai Public School. 

The award is $1000 which is to be used towards the further development 

of swimming. Isabel swims for the Berowra RSL Sub Branch Youth 

Swimming Club at Abbotsleigh pool during summer. Isabel has had a 

very successful swimming year, winning all her 50m races at the school 

carnival as well as the 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley 

breaking three school records and she represented her school at zone 

level. Isabel represented the club at the RSL State Championships 

in March at Ulladulla, where she won a bronze medal in the 50m 

breaststroke event and as part of a medley relay. 

At the RSL State Championships club members came away with five gold, 

five silver and eight bronze medals with previous recipients of the Hughes 

Award winning nine of the medals. 

The Swim Club would like to thank Berowra RSL Sub-Branch for their 

continued support of our swimmers over many years and the youth of the 

Berowra district. 

Berowra RSL Youth Swimming Club Registration Day is Saturday 

15th September at Berowra IGA at Marketplace Shopping Centre 

from 10.00am to 2.00pm. The swimming season will commence 

on Sunday 7th October at the Abbotsleigh pool at 9.00am.

I spent most of yesterday 

with really hot feet and a 

cold head! 

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago 

that my car had reached that stage 

where certain quirks have started to 

appear…last week’s quirk was that the 

air-conditioning system had ceased to 

function meaning that I was limited to the 

creative use of fans and windows in order 

to maintain comfort. This would have 

been OK but the previous week’s quirk 

was that I had developed a leak in my 

heater coil which meant that the only way 

I could drive without losing my radiator 

fluid was to drive with the heater on 32 

degrees. Both of these problems are due 

to be solved next week but this week I 

had a larger than usual freeway driving 

schedule and so my only option was hot 

feet and a cold head! 

As I was driving along it struck me just 

how silly I felt and how uncomfortable it 

became after an extended period 

of time. 

I love hot places; Africa, Asia and much 

of Australia. I love cold places; the snow, 

Canada and Niagara falls in winter, but 

I didn’t like being hot and cold at the 

same time. It felt a little like you do when 

you have the flu…your head is hot but 

your body is cold, you shift from one to 

the other and it seems that neither part 

of you can make up its mind, you toss, 

you turn and yet you cannot find relief or 

comfort no matter how you try… 

you know that there is something not 

quite right. 

People blow hot and cold for many 

things: Hobbies, interests and 

even relationships can be hot one 

moment and cold then next. It is very 

uncomfortable dealing with someone 

when you don’t know what their 

operating temperature is going to be. 

When it comes to spiritual things many 

people display the same tendency…they 

can be really hot in their pursuit of God 

and goodness and yet can quickly grow 

cold as they focus upon themselves and 

their own selfish desires. 

Nobody likes a hypocrite, being both 

hot and cold is not good and it is not 

welcome by anyone – the Lord is very 

direct in how He feels about it. 

“I know your works, that you are neither 

cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the 

other but because you are lukewarm, 

I will vomit you out of My mouth.”

So which are you? Hot or Cold? 

Whatever you do, don’t settle for the 

middle!

A small local Hornsby Kung Fu 

school was represented by 

8 Students in the National All 

Styles round 4 competition for 

the State Championships in 

September this year. 

This is Tao Gung Fu’s first time in this 

tournament. Shifu Kerim the Master 

of the school feels that it is important 

to train to be adaptable under all 

conditions. 

Four of the Students qualified for 

the state tournament in September. 

Amie Hill and Ian Tolnay received 

first place, Milena Lozanova and 

Sebastian Schaber received third 

place thus qualifying all four to 

compete in the state. 

The juniors were only entered at 

the last minute and had no time to 

train for the event. Katy Walters 

(8), Thomas Walters (10), Noah 

Merhebi (12) and Aiken Goh (9) 

did very well showing excellent 

technique and certainly show 

promise for the future events. 

Shifu Kerim will be training more 

students for these events and is 

confident that much more talent will 

arise from the Hornsby area.

VP & VV Day

I travelled to Martin Place 

in Sydney on Saturday 18 

August to catch up with 

my ex Navy shipmates 

for the 2012 Vietnam 

Veterans Day service. 

Among the veterans from 

the three forces lined 

up, I felt a bit of a living 

time warp, as at age 65, 

I was the only one still 

in uniform. I also met 

up with Army veteran 

Rod White, President 

Hornsby RSL Sub Branch, 

along with other fellow 

Hornsby RSL Sub Branch 

members. 

The following day Sunday 19 Aug, I joined up with fellow Navy 

Commander Andrew Tuft of Berowra at the ‘Australia Remembers 

Memorial Garden, Berowra Heights for a service to remember 

VP Day (Victory in the Pacific) on 02 Sept 1945, and Vietnam 

Veterans Day (VV Day) remembering the Battle of Long Tan, 

18 Aug 1966. 

“Today we are gathered here to honour and remember those 

Australians and her Allies that served and died in the Pacific 

Theatre of WW2 and Vietnam War,” said Bob Dobson AFSM 

(Australian Fire Service Medal) & OAM (Order of Australia) of Mt 

Kuring-gai, President Berowra RSL SB. 

Almost 1 million citizens out of a population of just 7.4 million 

served in the Australian armed forces during WW2 (1939-45) 

where more than 39,000 Australians died. Almost 60,000 

Australians served in Vietnam, 521 died as a result of the war and 

over 3,000 were wounded. 

Attending the Berowra service were RSL members from Hornsby, 

Berowra ,and Brooklyn (Pres Ken Shadie); politicians Philip 

Ruddock Federal MP for Berowra, Matt Kean State MP for Hornsby 

and Hornsby Shire Mayor Nick Berman; Berowra Station Officer 

Bruce Covey and his fellow fire-fighters from Fire Service NSW 

along with the Rural Fire Brigades of Berowra, Muogamurra, and 

Berowra Waters. 

A thanks to the Berowra RSL SB Youth Band, Director Grant 

Hughson (Waitara), for providing the live music, and also to 

Deputy Mayor Mick Smart and his Berowra APEX volunteers for 

setting up a sausage sizzle and drinks on completion of 

the service. 

The next commemoration service for 2012 will be 

‘Remembrance Day’ on Sun 11 Nov, which marks the 

anniversary of the armistice ending WW1 (1914–18).

Spring Fair & 

Markets 

Sunday 23rd September 2012 

from 10am to 4pm 

The annual Brooklyn Spring Fair and Markets is 

on again on Sunday 23rd September 2012 from 

10am to 4pm at the Brooklyn Football Oval on 

the banks of the beautiful Hawkesbury River. Just 

follow the signs to Brooklyn on the F3 Freeway! 

There will be free Family Entertainment ALL day, 

with a great line up of local bands and performers 

including Asquith Boys High School Swing Band, 

Crocodile Encounters, Dance Troupe, a drumming 

circle, the Crocodile Encounters reptile show, and 

a Sea FM Sea Cruiser will also be attending, as 

well as much more. 

This year we will be having six awesome rides 

at our fair including the giant fiberglass slide, a 

super sized and a smaller sized jumping castle, a 

mini ferris wheel, a swinging pirate ship and the 

cup and saucer ride. For the animal lovers there’ll 

be a petting farm and horse rides from Glenworth 

Valley. 

Approximately 50 market stalls will be coming, 

as well as lots of yummy food stalls. Come and 

sample our local oyster and prawns and learn 

about the industry on our river. There will also be 

some great prizes to be won, with a huge raffle 

and the famous $500 Pony Poo competition! 

The Brooklyn Spring Fair and Markets is in its 17th 

year of operation and is a major event on the 

social calendar on the lower Hawkesbury River. 

This is the biggest fundraiser for Hawkesbury River 

Childcare Centre. Profits raised by the fair ensure 

that we meet the centre’s running costs and can 

also buy new toys and resources for the little 

people in our community. 

We hope to see you there to 

enjoy a fun day out for all of the 

whole family and to start the 

school holidays with a bang!
