The announcement last week that Berowra Valley Regional Park will be made
a National Park was accompanied by much fanfare. However it has yet to be
passed into law so … fingers crossed. It also means funding will be assured and
management taken out of the hands of Hornsby Council.
It seems the restless natives (pictured below) are to be congratulated for their

Berowra Valley...
Some History: Originally known
as the Elouera Bushland
Natural Park, the currently
named Berowra Valley Regional
Park which embraces Hornsby
Shire’s suburbia, was dedicated
as a result of a group of 1950s era
‘greenies’ who wanted to protect
a lyrebird colony. In 1964 the
Lands Dept reserved the Elouera
Bushland Natural Park to be
managed by a Trust. It was an
area of bushland from Boundary
Road Pennant Hills to Hornsby Rifle
Range and covered 640 hectares.
In 1967 Dr Joyce Vickery MBE
donated 100 acres of her own
land at Joe’s Mountain, Old Man
Valley Hornsby to be included in
the Park. These areas were linked
by the Benowie Track which was
built in 1980. In 1986 bushwalkers
Gary McDougall and Leigh Shearer
Heriot proposed as a Bicentennial
Project to construct the Sydney
to Newcastle walking track to
incorporate the Benowie Track, and
became The Great North Walk. In
1998 the Berowra Valley Park was
incorporated in the new Berowra
Valley Regional Park which included
3800 ha of catchment bushland to
Berowra Creek. This meant that our

The NSW Government is proposing
to create the State’s latest national
park by granting over 3,800
hectares of Sydney’s Berowra
Valley Regional Park national
park status, in recognition of the
region’s environmental and cultural
significance.
Environment Minister Robyn Parker
said she was confident legislation
would pass for the creation of a new
national park, elevating the area’s
status and protecting its biodiversity
and cultural heritage in perpetuity.
“This will be done while ensuring
the community maintains access to
areas for recreational activities,” Ms
Parker said.
“Berowra Valley Regional Park is
one of those very special places
within the Sydney Basin landscape
that is well known for its incredible
natural beauty and cultural heritage
importance.

Hornsby Soroptimist member, Pamela Carey, was honoured at the Annual
Jean Arnot Memorial Luncheon held at Parliament House, Sydney on
Friday 4 th May.
The Jean Arnot Memorial Luncheon is held each year to remember Jean’s
contribution to
the struggle for
equal pay for equal
work in the public
service from the
early 1930s and to
honour all women
in their nineties
who have worked
for women and
their communities.
This year the
ladies in their 90 th
year or older were
presented to Her
Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO.
Pamela Carey joined Soroptimist International of Hornsby in 1985, and has
always been very much involved in the Club’s community service activities.
For several years Pamela represented SI Hornsby in the Cancer Council’s
Relay for Life (once together with her 102 year-old mother, raising $1,000
that afternoon).

Hornsby Heights Netball Club Extends
Hands of Friendship to Sri Lanka Clubs

of Hornsby Heights Netball
Club, wanted to find a way to
put their members’ superseded
uniforms to good use after they
updated to a new look.
Gavin said, “Murray
Macdonald, whose daughters
have been involved at the club for
many years, had visited Sri Lanka
with the Hornsby Heights Cricket
Club and suggested that we donate
the uniforms to schools over there.”
Murray and his wife Chris have just
returned from Sri Lanka and as part
of their trip donated the uniforms to
Sri Lankan schools.
Murray said, “The donated uniforms
went to two schools in Colombo, six
in the Kurunegala region and one
school in Gintota, just out of Galle.”
“Our itinerary meant that we
couldn’t deliver the uniforms
personally to Colombo but the
former Sri Lankan netball Captain
Jayanthi Somasekaran met my
wife Christine and I at our hotel
and we gave her the uniforms for
distribution.”
“The next day we arrived in
Kurunegala where we had arranged
to meet representatives from the 6
regional schools at the local cricket
club. These schools are so poor
that they could only send 3 or 4
girls from each school to meet us
as they couldn’t afford the bus fares
for more. Some travelled over 70
kms to be there and in Sri Lanka 70
km can take 2 or even 3 hours. The
girls from this area are the national
school champions. Remarkable
considering they are the poorest of
all the areas we visited and have
the least facilities.”
“None of the schools have any
sports uniforms, play on dirt courts
with no markings, they wear no
position defining bibs and all wear
their white school uniforms to play.
How they work out who is on what
team, off sides and positions is
anyone’s guess, but they seem to
manage OK.”
“All the umpiring shirts went to the
teachers here and they were very
grateful and the look on the girls
faces when we presented them
with the Hornsby Heights uniforms,
was fantastic. Never had they seen
specialised sports uniforms and
they were totally delighted.”

This school had been completely
destroyed by the tsunami in 2004.”
“I would like to extend a big Thank
You to everyone that donated their
uniforms, to the committee for the

Following Murray’s visit Hornsby

GREEN LIGHT for Mountain Bike Trail
Hornsby Shire Council last week approved plans for a new cross-country
mountain bike trail in Old Man’s Valley.
“We’re very excited about this and looking forward to the chance to build
a strong cycling community in the Shire,” Sydney North Off-Road Cyclists
Club Secretary Craig Starling said. The trail was first proposed in
December 2008 and since then the plans have undergone a number of
changes as the result of consultation with the public.
Of the 307 submissions received from the public 266 were in favour of the
proposal. Council sought an independent assessment that found the trail
will not have a significant impact on the environment. It has also committed
to 51,700 square metres of bush regeneration work and moved the
proposed trail so it is at least 20 metres away from the Blue Gum Diatreme
Forest in the valley.
To address the concerns of nearby residents regarding noise, the trail has
been moved as far from property boundaries as possible, while a screen of
foliage will be planted to increase the privacy of Dural Street residents.
Signs will be erected urging riders to be considerate of residents and the
trail will be closed after dark.

Dear BT,
With regard to the letter from ‘Smokey’ (TBTW
10/5) about log fires, I would like to make a few
comments: Apart from the fact that this natural
form of heating has been around forever, and
burn offs are occurring as I write (talk about
smoke!) please organise some ‘natural’ gas to
flow to Berowra, and I will willingly convert to this
method of heating my house.
The chances of gas lines coming to Berowra
are as likely as us visiting the moon next week.
Reverse cycle air conditioning is awful, and I
question the argument about whether this is
better for the environment. Bar and oil filled
heaters are incredibly expensive to run, and I
don’t like the prospect of walking around the
house looking like an Arctic explorer this winter.
The new generation of slow combustion heaters,
if used properly, should not generate a lot of
smoke and are incredibly cosy. Just use the right
wood.
I suggest ‘Smokey’ you have a friendly word to
your neighbours about the issue you have with
the pollution. You may find they can do something
about it rather than going down the track of
trying to ban yet another thing that makes life so
enjoyable for many.
By the way, I have no pecuniary interest in
firewood or heating businesses.

Dear BT,
Re - Les Howard’s question regarding the
Berowra wind generator (TBTW 26/4):
My memory isn’t amazing, but I recall I read
a few months ago, in the Advocate I think, a
short paragraph explaining that there is a large
part that needs replacing on the wind turbine.
However, it needed to be shipped from overseas
(I think it was Europe somewhere) and so it
wasn’t expected to arrive for a number of months.
I don’t recall it being an expense issue. I may be
wrong.
Our three year old son LOVES driving along
the highway and seeing the windmill - has done
virtually since it was installed. Even though it has
been down for the better part of a year, he still
asks about it every time, and lives in hope of its
return. I hazard a guess there are other children
who loved seeing it too.
Hopefully it will be fixed and back in service very
soon. Not only for the benefit of the environment,
and the NSW Rural Fire Service, but also for
benefit of my son :)

Dear BT,
The Saga of the Berowra Wind Turbine (TBTW
26/4).
The wind turbine was damaged or faulty and
“Conergy” (the installer) removed it and took it
to the manufacturer’s local representative for
repairs. The fault was established and noted as
part of a manufactured batch of ten or so that
had had problems. The manufacturer, a Scottish
company, was having financial difficulties and
went into receivership around this time so things
went on a go slow.
Conergy has now accepted its responsibility and
is taking care of the rectification work and will
re-install the turbine when repaired.
A Queensland company using Aussie know how
is doing the work, but I can imagine as a one off
may be a slow and testing process.
The time frame is unknown at this stage. The
Environment Department has promised to call
me back when the replacement time is known.

I was at the Council last week (May
16th) and it was a lively meeting.
I guess approaching elections the
knives are drawn and being wielded.
The results are that the Turner Road –
Kita Road development (commercial,
retail & residential) was passed and
looks like it will be full speed ahead.
The mountain bike trail was passed for
Old Man Valley and will go ahead.
At least sitting council members will be
able to crow about this achievement
as well as the Hornsby Pool during the
next election campaign.
Don’t forget the council that are
rebuilding the pool are the same ones
who closed it and put Berowra pool on
the back burner.
Wendy McMurdo raised a rescission
motion regarding the old pony club
ground at Schofield Parade closure
and rebuilding an oval at Stringybark
Ridge to protect the Berowra Valley
regional park.
This met with howls of opposition
and was deferred by 5/4 votes with
Councillor Chopra having to be
reminded to raise his hand.
Classic theatre at a minimal price if

An accident occurred during the
Berowra Premier League Soccer game
at Berowra Oval Saturday 5th May.
An ambulance was called and many
people have asked what it was for.
David Steptoe, Captain of Berowra
Premier League team, and a fellow
team member went in to save a goal
and during this manoeuvre, David’s
tibia was broken. He is progressing
well although a little immobile. Thanks
everyone for their support and well
wishes. Oh, by the way … they did
save the goal!

Colin Bourke of Hornsby was ‘sentenced
to life’ when he was granted Life
Membership of the Hornsby RSL Club
Ltd (HRSLC) at its AGM held Sunday
29 April 2012. Colin who is the elected
President of HRSLC joined the club 49
years ago on his 21st birthday, Friday 14
July 1963 (Bastille Day).
“Colin joined the club on the same
day I arrived in Sydney from Tipperary
in Ireland aboard the P&O liner SS
Strathmore,” said fellow Life Member &
Club Treasurer John Deane of Hornsby
North. John had proposed the life
membership of Colin at the AGM and it
was seconded by fellow club Director
Harry Anderson of Wahroonga, a former
Royal Navy submariner.
“Colin has served on many committees
and sub-committees, going that extra
yard to help people less fortunate than
most. His dedication and loyalty to
members and club issues is paramount
and we believe he is a very worthy
recipient of this award,” read John to the
AGM audience.
The whole auditorium voted unanimously
in favour of ‘Colin’s sentence’.
Colin was first elected to the club board
as a Director in 1996, he was Treasurer
in 2003 and has been President since
2005. He has enhanced his position by
completing many appropriate courses

Hornsby Primary School (now TAFE east
side Pacific Hwy) and then James Ruse
Agricultural High at Carlingford. ‘Vonnie’
attended Our Lady of the Rosary at
Waitara and then Hornsby Home Science
(now TAFE west side). They have 3 adult
children Melissa, Jason and Belinda.

Gambling counselling is a significant
part of the services offered by Lifeline
Harbour to Hawkesbury (H2H)
and given recent interest expressed
by clubs, school-based gambling
education programs may become a
future option for providing assistance
in the community, according to Wendy
Carver, CEO of Lifeline H2H.
The Lifeline H2H problem gambling
service receives referrals from different
sources including G-Line, the Lifeline
telephone crisis line, family or friends
and the internet.
“However, because problem gamblers
experience considerable shame,
denial and secrecy around their
problem gambling only a minority of
them will seek treatment,” said Ms
Carver.
“It is very positive to note that Clubs
Australia has called on both State
and Federal Governments to develop
and trial a national school-based
gambling education program (SMH
11 April 2012, p6),” Ms Carver said.
One of the goals of the LLH2H
problem gambling service is to
develop relationships with other
organisations within the community
to raise awareness about problem
gambling and its impact,”
Ms Carver said.

BABY PROMS
with the Golden Kangaroos
There will be bears galore when the Golden Kangaroos (Hornsby
Concert Band) present their popular Baby Proms at the Epping Club.
Band member Jo Druitt (pictured) has written a musical version of the
well-known story, “Bears in the Night” by Stan and Jan Berenstein, about
adventurous bears on a slightly scary adventure.
“I loved the idea of combining a story with music - like Peter and the Wolf, so
I decided to bring this favourite to life through music and have scored it for
concert band to be performed as part of the Baby Proms,” she said.
Baby Proms are a fun way to introduce young children (2-6 years) to
instrumental music.
“Children love to use their imagination, and the exciting sounds of live music
open their minds to a whole new world of possibilities”, said the band’s Musical
Director, Stephen O’Doherty.
“We’ll give them the chance to play and sing along with the band, and of
course, to march with us!
“Our aim is to create a fun environment and give young children a rich
new experience.

For the last few days I
have had something
stuck in my right eye and it has been
more than a little irritating…but it
is my own fault and it is totally self
inflicted.
You see, I have reached that stage
in life where my eyesight has
deteriorated just enough to make
reading difficult. My first reaction
was to squint and try harder, then
I tried the “Hold the book a little
further away” trick but eventually my
arms weren’t long enough (especially
at restaurants) and I had to go and
get glasses. I have been wearing
reading glasses for 3 years.
Recently I heard something very
interesting; our brains are so
spectacular that if you wear only one
contact lens on your non dominant
eye it is possible in 80% of cases that
your brain will be able to effectively
‘choose’ which eye it will focus with
whilst doing a specific task.
So when I need to look into the
distance, my brain will ignore the eye
with the lens and when I am reading
close, it will use the other.
So, I am doing a two week
experiment to see if it works for me.
At first it was quite weird with a slight
feeling of nausea and a shift in my
equilibrium but over a few days it
has improved. I find I can read quite
well but it is not yet perfect, we shall
see…
My biggest problem is getting the
contact into my eye. It is a bit of
a catch 22 situation because you
really need good eyesight to see
the contact and to get it in the right
position and more than once I have
had to get my glasses to find the
contact when I dropped it!
I know that I take my ability to see for
granted. It is only at times like I am
describing that I ever contemplate
how challenging it must be to have
impaired vision. I am so thankful
that I can afford glasses and the
luxury of being able to experiment
with contacts.
When we look into the things of God
none of us yet have ‘perfect vision’
but a time is coming when we shall.

New research1 commissioned by Epilepsy Action Australia, the nation’s
largest provider of specialist epilepsy services, shows Australians prefer
to access health education online rather than through traditional sources
such as community groups and libraries.
62% of Australians indicated they would rather go online for further information
or training about health conditions as opposed to visiting a doctor (47%),
community group (40%), or library (31%). Further, the research showed 90%
would consider taking an online education course about a health condition in
relation to a specific diagnosis that was made for someone close to them.

learning and education for people living with epilepsy, parents, carers and

A $4.8 million upgrade at Galston Gorge to better detect and
manage over-length vehicles is now complete.
In late 2010 after community concerns, RMS (formerly RTA) committed
to a range of measures to prevent rogue operators of over-length
vehicles illegally travelling through the gorge.
Heavy vehicles longer than 7.5 metres are restricted from entering
Galston Gorge. Light vehicle combinations more than 11 metres long
are also restricted.
“Galston Gorge has a history of over-length heavy vehicles ignoring
warning signs, trying to negotiate the road, becoming stuck and
creating traffic issues,” State Member for Hornsby, Mr Kean said.
New measures implemented as part of the upgrade include:
A roundabout on the western side of Galston Gorge to allow overlength
heavy vehicles to turn around safely.
Traffic sensors on both sides of the Gorge to detect over-length
vehicles and activate electronic warning signs which instruct the driver
to turn around.
Length restriction enforcement cameras set up at the eastern end of the
gorge.
A system which alerts RMS heavy vehicle inspectors if an over-length
vehicle triggers the enforcement cameras.
Measuring bays to help drivers determine the length of their vehicle
installed at each end of the gorge, with assistance available from RMS
inspectors.
The penalty for ignoring signs restricting heavy vehicles longer than 7.5
metres from entering Galston Gorge is $1824 and six demerit points.

A very special THANK YOU to the two “joggers” (mother &
daughter?) from Asquith, who interrupted their early morning
run past Hunt Reserve Mt Colah, to help unload plants from our
delivery truck.
The cool but sunny Autumn day was ideal for the many people passing
by the Mothers Day Plant Sale at Hunt Reserve last week. We met some
newcomers to our neighbourhood who were planning their gardens and
many small children with their Dads “buying a plant for Mummy”.
The Raffle winners were: P Rainbird, Mt Colah - Green ticket B21 and
Linda Hayes, Berowra - Green ticket B2.
Congratulations and enjoy your prizes!
The proceeds from all the sales will help Rotary Youth Projects.

Wallarobba Arts and Cultural
Centre will host an exhibition
of artworks made entirely from
materials that were headed towards
the garbage bin.
“Old barbie dolls, video tapes, potato
chip packets, tea bags and 450 zippers
were among the items transformed
into art for this year’s exhibition,” event
coordinator Kerry Euers says.
The exhibition will be open from
Wednesday 6 June to Sunday 24 June,
from 10am to 4pm daily.
The public is also invited to the awards
presentation night at Wallarobba, on
Friday 8 June at
7pm, where more than $5,500
will be awarded to the winning artists.
The exhibition includes over 80
sculptures, as well as wearable,
functional, mixed media and youth
artworks created by people who live
in Hornsby Shire or are members of
Hornsby Art Society.

Rock’n Soul?
It’s a CHOIR!
Early in May, 80 of The Rock’n Soul
Choir members performed at Festival
on the Green for The Ku-Ring-Gai
Council.
“Glorious weather and a dynamite
performance by the Choir”
On Sunday 20th May The Rock’n Soul
Choir will perform at Homebush Stadium
for the big annual RSPCA’s Million Paws
Walk. This event will see all the Rock’n
Soul Kids perform on stage with over
100 Rock’n Choir members singing
songs like John Farnham’s ‘You’re The
Voice’, Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’, ‘Old
Northern Town’, ‘Shackles’ and other
well-known hits. The Rock’n Soul Choir is
also in the process of submitting recipes
for a Rock’n Soul Cookbook with 100%
of the proceeds going to the RSPCA.
Anyone young and old can be part of the
Choir. There are no auditions and no
need for a perfect voice. … Just a little
rock and soul!
The Hornsby Rock’n Soul Choir rehearse
on Tuesdays 7.30pm-9pm at the Uniting
Church Hall, 24 William St, Hornsby.
The Pymble Choir rehearses on
Wednesdays 8pm-9.30pm at The Kuring-gai
Town Hall.
