An eco-friendly alternative
to traditional water repellents
Traditional fluorocarbon-based waterrepellent
technologies present serious
environmental challenges, especially
solvents and C8-based fluorocarbons
that contain perfluorooctanoic acid
(PFOA), which is bioaccumulative
and persistent in the environment.
In contrast, silicone-based Dow Corning
GSD-7000 Soft Protection contains no
fluorine, solvent or APEO (alkylphenol

ethoxylate). Silicones exhibit no adverse
toxicological effects or evidence of
bioaccumulation and have no effects on
soil-living species or on crop growth.
Regardless of the technology used, most
residual chemicals used in textile finishing
are discharged to on-site wastewater
treatment systems. Polydimethylsiloxane
(the essential component of most
silicone-based textile finishes), whether
incinerated or used as a soil amendment,
decomposes into naturally occurring
compounds (water, carbon dioxide and
silicon dioxide).

Performance
When tested against a C6-based fluorochemical water
repellent, Dow Corning GSD-7000 Soft Protection
demonstrates longer-lasting water-repellent performance
durability. See Figure 1.
Evaluation of textile hand demonstrates the superior
softening performance of Dow Corning GSD-7000
Soft Protection on khaki twill compared to a C6-based
fluorochemical water repellent and untreated fabric.
