Distribute the Student Resource (Survey Worksheet). Have students complete a selfsurvey on well-being and give them the option of calculating the scoring section of the survey. 2. After students have completed the survey, lead a class discussion on their findings, concerns, questions, etc. Ask students to describe what they believe constitutes a mentally healthy person. 3. Build a list of characteristics of a mentally healthy person from the studentsÕ descriptions. Compare the list to the definition (see Teacher Resource- Overhead). 4. Provide an overview of MaslowÕs Hierarchy of Needs for students. People who are mentally healthyÉexperience stress, frustrations, feelings of selfdoubt, failure, and rejection. What distinguishes the mentally healthy from someone who is not mentally healthy is their resilience. Resilience is a personÕs ability to recapture their sense of emotional wellness within a reasonable time using a variety of coping strategies. (An example of resilience Ð If your partner breaks up with you, are you able to overcome this emotionally and eventually start seeing other people?) Characteristics (of a Mentally Healthy Person): • hopefulness about opportunities and lifeÕs challenges • persistent in achieving oneÕs goals • practical/realistic about goals as well as their strengths and weaknesses • responsible for own personal behaviour • respect own needs and the needs of others • healthy self-esteem / positive self-concept • healthy self-confidence • ability to manage stress effectively • ability to work productively • support network (family, friends, mentors) • healthy attitude towards lifeÕs problems and difficulties • seeks help / advice when needed Grade 11 Healthy Active Living Education (PPL30), Module #2 Positive Mental Health and Stress Page 2
