My, how time flies. This month I will<br />

complete my first year as president of<br />

<strong>Agudath</strong> <strong>Achim</strong>. I can honestly say that<br />

the majority of the time it has been a<br />

labor of love. I have been very lucky to<br />

be able to work closely with Rabbi Wohl<br />

during these past 9 months. He brings<br />

such passion to his job. It has truly been<br />

a joy.<br />

I must take this time to thank some of<br />

our Board Members. Thanks to Ron<br />

Adelman, who has done so much to keep<br />

our finances in order and help with the<br />

day to day operations of our synagogue.<br />

Thanks to Laura Scheinberg who agreed<br />

to be secretary for one more year.<br />

Regretfully, Laura will be giving up the<br />

position for next year. We are looking<br />

for a replacement. If you are interested,<br />

please contact me. Dave Binus has<br />

stepped up as First Vice President<br />

and is beginning to learn the job of<br />

President. Jeff Greenberg continues to<br />

be the synagogue photographer. Mark<br />

Lipitz has helped wherever he can. I<br />

want to thank all the past presidents who<br />

are always ready to give coaching and<br />

advice when needed.<br />

Carol Lipitz has done a fabulous job as<br />

Sisterhood President. Whenever there<br />

has been an event that needs to be done,<br />

Carol has come through with flying<br />

colors. Sisterhood does so many things<br />

for our synagogue. We couldn’t function<br />

without them. Thanks Carol.<br />

I want to thank Madelyn Greenberg for<br />

all her hard work on the Shofar. By<br />

the way, we will now be publishing<br />

the Shofar quarterly. If you would<br />

like to receive your copy via email,<br />

please email Cindy and let her<br />

know. You will get it faster and save<br />

the synagogue postage. Madelyn,<br />

Maxine and Judi Sue also need to be<br />

commended for their fabulous work<br />

on the Chronicle. Congregants turn<br />

to the Chronicle all year long for vital<br />

information. Please help with this<br />

fundraiser by placing an ad in this<br />

year’s Chronicle.<br />

I want to acknowledge two of our past<br />

congregants who have remembered<br />

<strong>Agudath</strong> <strong>Achim</strong> in their wills.<br />

Florence Diamond and Betty Lenson<br />

of blessed memory. This would<br />

be a good time for all congregants<br />

to consider remembering <strong>Agudath</strong><br />

<strong>Achim</strong> in their wills.<br />

For those of you who attended, you<br />

know what a great experience our<br />

Megilah reading was. Rabbi Wohl<br />

did a wonderful job of including<br />

everyone in attendance with reading<br />

the Megilah or participating in a<br />

Seinfeld like skit, or answering quiz<br />

questions for candy. Please plan<br />

ahead for next year to participate in<br />

this wonderful holiday event.<br />

Saturday morning Shabbat services<br />

continue to be such a joy. The service<br />

follows <strong>Agudath</strong> <strong>Achim</strong>’s traditions,<br />

includes a vibrant and insightful<br />

sermon by Rabbi Wohl, a delicious<br />

lunch with lively discussions and it<br />

only takes about two hours. Please<br />

try to carve out two hours each week<br />

and join us. Services start at 9:30 AM<br />

on Saturday and we have a short 40<br />

minute service on Sunday beginning<br />

at 8:30 AM.<br />

<strong>Our</strong> annual dinner meeting will be held<br />

on May 20th at 5 PM. Please plan on<br />

joining us for a great dinner and our<br />

annual election of officers. Thanks<br />

to Steve Seltzer who is chairperson<br />

of the nominating committee and<br />

Andrea Cohen who is chairperson for<br />

the dinner.<br />

Please remember that your fair share<br />

dues are vital to all the good things<br />

that happen at <strong>Agudath</strong> <strong>Achim</strong>.<br />

Please review your dues amount and<br />

if possible increase your commitment.<br />

All dues are payable by June 30th.<br />

It’s a shame that Shavuot is not as<br />

widely observed by Jews as Passover<br />

or Hanukah for it celebrates the<br />

most important event in Jewish<br />

history: the giving of the Torah at<br />

Mt. Sinai. <strong>Our</strong> tradition teaches us<br />

that on the Sixth of Sivan, only our<br />

pious ancestors stayed up all night in<br />

excited anticipation of Moses’ return<br />

with the Ten Commandments.<br />

In commemoration of this<br />

momentous event, Jews around<br />

the world come together on the<br />

eve of Shavuot to study Torah and<br />

nosh on Ice Cream and Cake. This<br />

annual all-night gathering is known<br />

as a Tikkun. The Kabbalists who<br />

originated the practice believed that<br />

at midnight the heavens open up and<br />

favorably receive the thoughts and<br />

prayers of those who remain awake<br />

on the anniversary of the Revelation.<br />

I remember attending my first Tikkun<br />

as a student at the Pardes Institute<br />

for Jewish Studies in Jerusalem.<br />

My fellow yeshiva-buchers and I<br />

spent the entire night studying and<br />

noshing until 6am when we, along<br />

with tens of thousands of other Jews<br />

of all races and denominations,<br />

walked down to the Western Wall to<br />

recite the morning prayers. Some<br />

have estimated that close to 250,000<br />

Israelis visit the Western Wall on this<br />

very holy day.<br />

This year AAC will hold our own<br />

Tikkun on Saturday, May 26th at<br />

8pm. Now, I can guarantee you that<br />

we won’t be studying until dawn<br />

breaks and that the turnout will be a<br />

little smaller than the 250,000 Jews<br />

that convene at the Western Wall.<br />

However this will be a fun event for<br />

congregants who like to a) study<br />

Torah or b) eat delicious Ice Cream<br />

Sundaes. So, I hope to see everyone<br />

at the Tikkun as we celebrate the<br />

joyous holiday of Shavuot.<br />

<strong>Agudath</strong> <strong>Achim</strong> offers many opportunities for our members and friends to<br />

contribute to our Synagogue through various funds. Please consider a<br />

contribution to <strong>Agudath</strong> <strong>Achim</strong> to honor, remember, or congratulate your friends<br />

and family members. For your reference, we are happy to provide a list of the areas<br />

that are available for your consideration.<br />

Golden Book - minimum contribution of $4.00<br />

Sisterhood Window Fund (plaque located in Social Hall) - minimum contribution<br />

of $25.00<br />

Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund - Rabbi Wohl uses these funds to make<br />

charitable contributions on behalf of the synagogue as well as to<br />

purchase music, books and other educational material that benefit the<br />

synagogue and Jewish community of Altoona.<br />

Tree of Life Sculpture (main lobby) - minimum contribution per leaf of $125.00<br />

Eternal Light Fund (sculpture in main lobby). Categories on the sculpture include<br />

contributions of $1000.00, $2500.00, $5000.00, $10,000.00, and $25,000.00. Sisterhood<br />

prayer book fund- minimum $36.<br />

Contributions to our general fund for the benefit of our operating budget are<br />

welcome in any amount.<br />

Participation in our Trust Funds that include our Eternal Light and our Physical<br />

Trust can include your gifts of securities, cash, or insurance benefits. Please<br />

contact Joel or Clark to discuss your interest in helping to secure the future of<br />

our <strong>Agudath</strong> <strong>Achim</strong> with your kind generosity.
