The Expansion of Possibility 

Imagine is a verb that means ‘to bring something before the mind’ or more 

literally, to form a mental image of something not actually present to the 

senses. It means to think, and to believe. It is a verb that has particular meaning 

for Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, especially as we approach the end 

of one year and the beginning of another. 

Our donors know what it means to imagine. They imagine the comfort they 

can bring to others by supporting an endowment which helps train clinical 

pastoral caregivers. They imagine the strength and hope other parents of 

autistic children may receive if an innovative program can be expanded. They 

imagine the lives that will be saved through gifts to sustain the excellence of a 

nationally-recognized cardiac care team. Their stories, and more, are featured 

in this issue of Pathfinders. 

As this year comes to a close, we ask our readers to imagine: Wouldn’t the 

enjoyment of life be reduced in an instant if you removed the possibility of 

doing something? Think. Believe in possibility. Join us in doing something great 

in the year ahead.

how extraordinary that care is 

unless you’re a patient—which is 

exactly what Lori Bresnahan, RN 

found out this summer when she 

suffered a heart attack. 

Lori is an experienced Gundersen 

Lutheran MedLink AIR flight nurse, 

skilled at providing the rapid response 

and transport required by Priority One 

cardiac patients. This time, she was the 

patient. Gundersen Lutheran’s Priority 

One Heart Attack Program was launched 

in 2005 to remove time barriers in 

getting a heart attack patient’s blocked 

artery open as quickly as possible. 

Currently 14 hospitals and healthcare 

facilities participate in the program. 

Here is how Lori’s Priority One experience unfolded.

While every Priority One patient receives exceptional care, not every Priority One patient gets to go back to 

work along side the same people who helped them survive their heart attack. Lori Bresnahan spent a day 

revisiting some key members of her care team—and longtime friends.

MedLink AIR Hangar After completing her regular 12-hour night shift, 

Lori was in Gundersen Lutheran’s Rasmus Center participating in a 

morning program for visiting high school students. She had returned to 

the hangar to change out of her flight suit when the pain hit. “At the time, I 

didn’t think of it as a baseball bat to my jaw, but later on that was the closest 

way to describe such extreme pain,” recalls Lori. She immediately stood 

still and felt herself getting sweaty and light-headed. After walking back 

into the hangar bay, she put herself on a monitor to check blood pressure 

and EKG tracing. Lori asks her colleague Doug Ehlers, lead helicopter 

mechanic, to take her to the ER. It was around 10:20 a.m. 

ER At this point, Lori is still thinking and acting in nurse mode. She hands 

the results of her heart rate tracing to Jill Wilke, RN and tells her what is 

happening. “Everybody there was someone I’ve worked with forever,” says 

Lori. Rick Barton, the EMT paramedic who had just partnered with Lori at 

the Rasmus Center demonstration, starts her IV and prepares for the EKG. Jill 

starts calling Lori’s family to let them know she is having a heart attack. TEC 

physician Todd Phillips, MD tells Lori he’s activating P1 (Priority One.) At 

that point, “I wasn’t sobbing, but I couldn’t stop the tears,” recalls Lori. The 

TEC staff is still giving her medications as the team begins making the trip 

upstairs to the Cardiac Cath Lab. 

Cardiac Catheterization Lab “I was very lucky—within 20 

minutes I went from being in triage having everything done in 

TEC to being in the Cath Lab with the procedure already starting,” 

says Lori. “I kept my eyes closed, slowing my breathing, doing 

everything I could to make it easier for the cardiologists.” Ward 

Brown, MD performed the cardiac catheritization that attempted 

to open Lori’s blockage of the left anterior descending (LAD) 

artery. She had never known him to be so quiet. The structure of 

her blood vessels was making it impossible to place a wire or a 

stent where it was needed. “I had no other disease anywhere else. 

No blockages, narrowing, or occlusions anywhere else in my heart. 

Just that one blood vessel,” explains Lori. Multiple attempts to 

open the blood vessel with intra-coronary nitroglycerin were also 

unsuccessful. Despite all efforts, the team was not able to establish 

blood flow on the other side of Lori’s blockage. 

CCU Cardiologist Rajah Sundaram, MD was Lori’s admitting physician 

and told her his first visit was as her friend, not her doctor. Another 

longtime colleague, CCU nurse Connie McCullick, ANP, was Lori’s 

nurse in CCU. “As healthcare workers, we’re not always good about 

being on the receiving end of care. I kept telling people that they were 

truly amazing. They don’t hear it enough,” says Lori. “The people in 

the Cath Lab were the first ones to give me flowers, and I hadn’t been

in my room 10 minutes!” Although she’d been awake for over 24 hours, she can’t 

yet sleep while thinking “Oh my god, I can’t believe this just happened to me.” It 

wasn’t until Lori’s family brought her own pillow from home the next day that she 

began to relax.

they fully understand what is

Lori. Her sister was impressed by how Lori’s care team listened to her opinions 

throughout each step of decision making. “Again speaking as a healthcare worker, 

you don’t fully realize the patient has as much input as they have,” says Lori. 

Another longtime friend, Cindy Tjoflat, RN, was the nurse who began giving Lori 

her discharge instructions. Just two days after her discharge, she was readmitted on 

the verge of an unpreventable second heart attack. “Even though I wasn’t the ideal 

P1 case where an ultimate fix (angioplasty, stent, open heart surgery) was possible, 

they were able to control how extensive my heart attacks were just by all the extra 

medical support,” says Lori.

Jo Burke, NP. “They are both just 

awesome and amazing,” says Lori. “Mary Jo called me at home at 9:00 one night 

to go over a concern she had. Who else would do that?” This part of the recovery 

process is about “putting the whole picture together so you can re-structure your 

routine and get a life back,” says Lori. “You just need to give it time.” 

Recently cleared to return to work on a part-time basis, Lori is feeling good and 

grateful to be getting back on the MedLink helicopter. “It’s the next step and I’m 

ready for it,” she says. Her experience has given her a profound appreciation for 

the full spectrum of heart care provided by Gundersen Lutheran. “As a CCU nurse 

I always knew what my component was, and as a flight nurse I knew what my 

component was, but you don’t see the benefits of each part in combination. I’ve 

learned a lot through all of it, especially gratitude for what your life is like and for 

what everybody has done.” D

Medical Foundation and Heart to Heart initiates 

a new tradition of health and wellness. 

For more than 14 years, Gundersen Lutheran’s 

Heart to Heart event has been a great opportunity 

for heart patients and their families to gather for 

education and entertainment. It’s also been a special 

time for our care providers to interact with their 

patients in a social setting. 

With the growing trends on whole health and 

interest in wellness, there is no better time for Heart 

to Heart to embrace a larger audience in promotion 

of a healthy and active life style. That’s exactly what 

the first annual Heart to Heart Health & Wellness 

Festival is aiming to do. 

The one-day festival will be held next summer on 

the campus of Gundersen Lutheran’s Onalaska Clinic. 

All proceeds will benefit programs and services 

of the Gundersen Lutheran Heart Institute. As 

planning continues, festival details will be available

Grateful 

Parents Give 

PEACE a 

Chance 

Imagine being the parents of a child 

who has been diagnosed with Autistic 

Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a complex 

neurobiological developmental disorder 

that will affect your child’s entire life. 

A diagnosis is just the first step of what 

will be a lifelong journey. The uniqueness 

of each individual with autism 

makes the experience different for each 

family. The demands of raising a child 

with an Autism Spectrum Disorder are 

great, and families frequently experience 

high levels of stress. 

Recognizing the need to help parents 

understand and plan to meet the needs of their 

child after an ASD diagnosis led Gundersen 

Lutheran specialists to create an innovative 

program known as PEACE (Providing 

Effective Autistic Spectrum Disorder Care 

and Education) for Parents. “The program 

came from our desire to do what’s right for 

families and kids,” says speech pathologist 

Julie C Wise, MA, CCC-SLP. After that initial 

diagnosis “we wanted to have something to 

tell parents to look forward to and to help them 

cope.” PEACE is unique because the family 

and their trans-disciplinary medical care team 

develop individualized goals based on the 

family’s identified needs. 

Objectives of the program include: helping 

parents understand their child’s diagnosis, 

giving them tools to help their child on a 

daily basis; helping parents meet their own 

expectations in caring for their child; and

knowing how and where to access 

services for their child. Content 

is tailored to parental goals and is 

dependent on the age, diagnosis, and 

functional ability of the children. 

The program consists of 24 meetings 

per family over 12 weeks, covering 

multiple aspects of the present 

understanding of autism—particularly 

what to expect and how to cope at 

home. Funding support to date has 

been provided by Children’s Miracle 

Network ® , a service of Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation. These 

grant monies help offset expenses 

that would otherwise be borne by 

participating families, since insurance 

coverage or reimbursement of PEACE 

program services can vary. 

Autism is a treatable disorder. Children 

will not “outgrow” autism, but 

studies show that early diagnosis and

Since Gundersen Lutheran’s PEACE program was launched 

in 2008, its creators (Deb Olufs, PhD; Mary Linville, 

MSSW; and Julie Wise, MA, CCC-SLP) have had the 

goal of establishing a long-term source of funding to make 

this unique program secure, sustainable and available to 

families in need. Milt and Amy Hendrickson felt the same 

way after they completed the PEACE program earlier this 

year. “We want to give back and let other families who have 

children with autism know that there is help and people 

who understand what they are dealing with every day,” says 

Milt. “We want to share our experiences with other families 

of autistic children and in a sense ‘pay it forward’ to help 

families get involved in the PEACE program who may never 

have been able to do so.” 

The Hendricksons are partnering with Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation to sponsor a football-themed fundraiser 

in early 2011 prior to Super Bowl XLV. (Milt is currently the 

Midwest area scout for the Baltimore Ravens.) Proceeds will 

benefit the Foundation’s new Autism Education & Awareness 

intervention can lead to significantly 

improved outcomes. When Milt and 

Amy Hendrickson’s son, Hutson, was 

diagnosed with ASD in January 2010, 

they were able to enroll in the PEACE 

session that began in February. “We 

started the program with an open 

mind and found it was very valuable 

in a number of ways,” says Amy. The 

benefits identified by the Hendricksons 

echo the feedback of other PEACE 

program participants, namely: 

• Learning about autism and the broad 

spectrum of issues that it encompasses. 

• Finding out about the variety of 

resources available to both parents and 

children with autism. 

• Realizing that children with autism 

can and often do have the opportunity 

to live relatively “normal” lives when 

given necessary resources. 

• Meeting other families and sharing 

resources and experiences. Simply 

talking to other parents who know 

what it is like to have an autistic child 

serves as great source of support and 

understanding. 

Research indicates that early intervention 

programs and strengthening the 

parents’ belief in their capabilities as 

caregivers can result in significant 

improvements to the overall outcome 

of the child. It can be nothing short 

of lifechanging for the entire family. 

“Hutson is an unbelievable kid who 

is going to do great things,” says 

Milt. “He is a special gift that Amy and 

I have received.” Adds Amy, “Hutson 

has taught our family—not only my 

husband and myself, but our entire 

family—so much about how to live 

your life and how to enjoy every second 

you have.” D 

“The most valuable aspect of the PEACE program is the relationships developed 

with the staff and the other families. They are and will continue to be a part of 

our lives.” ~ Amy Hendrickson 

PEACE Fund and provide support for families participating 

in the program. “Most people would give anything for their 

child, but with health care costs the way they are, they may 

not be able to afford this program,” says Amy. “As parents, we 

felt the need not only to educate other families about autism, 

but also to give them the extra resource to say ‘I’m the best 

advocate for my child; I should be the first teacher they have, 

and this is the best way to prepare myself to do that.”

Compassionate Care, 

Grounded in Faith 

Providing high quality familycentered 

pastoral care for the 

patients, families and staff 

of Gundersen Lutheran is a 

cornerstone of the Pastoral 

Care Department’s mission. 

The department’s manager, 

Rev. Stephan Brunelle, cannot 

imagine being able to deliver 

on that mission without the 

presence of the Clinical Pastoral 

Education (CPE) program at 

Gundersen Lutheran. “Our 

CPE students are critical to 

providing the level of 24/7 care 

we provide here,” says Stephan. 

“Our students provide a majority 

of our crisis and emergency 

care, particularly overnight and 

on weekends. Without them, it 

would be impossible.” 

The purpose of Clinical Pastoral 

Education (CPE) is to offer the 

opportunity for ministers to reflect 

upon and develop their pastoral care 

theology and ministry. The program 

provides individual and group 

supervisory experiences that invite 

students to a deeper awareness of 

their pastoral ministry and begins to 

explore other possibilities in the care 

they provide. Gundersen Lutheran’s 

CPE program is accredited by the 

Association for Clinical Pastoral 

Education (ACPE) to offer all levels of 

training according to ACPE standards. 

Support from Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation (see sidebar) has 

helped the program grow from one 

ACPE supervisor in 1986 to its current 

enrollment of two ACPE supervisors, 

six stipend residents (one or two of 

whom are designated supervisory 

education students), between three and 

seven summer interns, and up to seven 

extended interns. 

Laura (Lori) Kaufmann, is a 

graduate of Gundersen Lutheran’s 

CPE program and now serves as its 

manager. She has seen first-hand how 

students help contribute to the overall 

quality of pastoral care provided at 

Gundersen Lutheran. “Our department 

is committed to professional 

chaplaincy and to offering competent, 

compassionate care. Our students 

help us be a quality department,” 

says Lori. “They ask hard questions. 

They observe us and challenge what 

we do. They bring fresh eyes, so their 

perspective is huge blessing.” 

The department has been a leader in 

patient and family centered pastoral 

care for many years. Lori describes 

that approach as “teaching people how 

to listen to concerns in a holistic way. 

We’re looking at the whole person and 

the things going on for that patient, and 

their family. We try to journey with 

them providing empathy and spiritual 

support. We trust that with support, 

people are able to draw on their own

internal religious or spiritual resources to help them to cope 

with their crisis and continue the process of healing.” 

The value of pastoral care during a healthcare “journey” 

is expressed by many grateful patients and families. Mary 

Conway of La Crescent recalls how CPE resident Sarah 

Kolden became a regular visitor when Mary’s adult daughter, 

JoAnn Harlos, was hospitalized prior to passing away last 

March. “Sarah and I share an awful lot of closeness. She has a 

heart full of love,” says Mary. She recalls receiving hugs from 

Sarah at JoAnn’s funeral, and later at a remembrance event 

hosted by Gundersen Lutheran for bereaved families. “The 

whole department was very, very good to us.” 

The rapidly changing nature of healthcare poses its own 

challenges for pastoral care. The department’s leaders are 

seeing increasing demand and desire for more spiritual care 

involvement in the clinic as well as other outpatient settings. 

“That’s becoming a big question for us,” says Stephan. 

“Within limited resources, how do we continue to provide 

24/7 care in the hospital that is high quality, yet also respond 

to some of the needs coming our way from outside the 

hospital? The Foundation’s support really helps us extend our 

reach to those areas. Their stipends allow us to sometimes 

place students in unique settings for pastoral care.” 

Rev. Kristin Schmor Rice is an ACPE Supervisory Candidate 

in Gundersen Lutheran’s CPE program and has received 

support from the Foundation each step of the way. As Kristin 

observes, “There aren’t many CPE programs able to do this 

for their students, and I think it helps to reinforce the value 

this institution does have for pastoral care. I know several 

students have benefitted from that support over the years, and 

it’s something that makes our program unique.” Originally 

from Medford, Ore., Kristin attended the San Francisco 

Theological Seminary and was doing her pastoral internship 

at First Presbyterian Church in La Crosse when she joined 

the CPE program in 2006. “I was still discerning what kind 

of ministry I was called to and felt continuing with the CPE 

residency would give me an opportunity to explore that more 

deeply, to grow as a pastoral caregiver and to take advantage 

of the rich learning process here.” 

The Foundation’s investment in Clinical Pastoral Education 

is something Kristin admires for bigger reasons. “It not only 

improves the quality of pastoral care that we offer to patients 

and families right here, but our students go on to minister all 

over the country and even in other parts of the world. It’s quite 

a contribution that we make to care giving in general. I like to 

think about the implications that has for people, families and 

communities in different corners of the globe.” D

challenges CPE students to develop the care, knowledge and skills 

needed to offer quality pastoral care. 

The Dan Vinge Endowment Fund 

for Clinical Pastoral Education 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation established 

this endowment fund in honor of Rev. Dan Vinge, who 

became Gundersen Lutheran’s first full time chaplain and 

director of pastoral care in 1968. Under his leadership, 

the department established pastoral services to patients, 

families and staff, and maintained an educational 

emphasis with clergy. His efforts led to the creation of 

the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) 

program at Gundersen Lutheran in 1986. 

The Dan Vinge Endowment Fund supports clinical 

pastoral education at Gundersen Lutheran in several 

ways. It helps offset student tuition expenses associated 

with the program, and also assists with costs for 

participating in national conferences or workshops. Each 

year the fund provides a salary stipend for two residency 

positions in the community: one with the Gundersen 

Lutheran At Home Hospice program, and the other with 

the Palliative Care program. 

Joyce and Ray Wichelt of Stoddard are longtime donors 

to the fund who understand the importance of pastoral 

care in the clinical setting. “We’ve experienced kind and

Campus Renewal Moves Forward 

Groundbreaking on new Hospital and Behavioral 

Health addition anticipated in 2011 

Gundersen Lutheran’s La Crosse 

Campus will soon be getting a major 

facelift. Earlier this year, the Boards gave 

approval to complete planning for the 

new 400,000 square foot Hospital, with 

the first phase of construction to begin in 

early 2011. Groundbreaking on an addition 

to the Behavioral Health inpatient 

building is slated for later in the year. 

“This is not a decision the Gundersen 

Lutheran board members took lightly, 

but ultimately, we saw the great need 

that exists and voted unanimously 

to move forward on the project. This 

will be a great thing for Gundersen 

Lutheran’s patients and staff and the 

communities they serve,” says Greg 

Prairie, Gundersen Lutheran Board 

member and CFO of Inland Label and 

Marketing Services. 

Final plans for the Behavioral Health 

addition are pending. The new Hospital 

will be built in several phases over the 

course of four to eight years. To ensure 

the continued financial stability of the 

organization, the Board committed to 

putting up the outside structure of the 

new Hospital and completing only the 

most critical portions of the facility first.

include the Hospital lobby, Emergency 

Room/Urgent Care and Central 

Imaging (Radiology) on the 1st floor; 

and the Medical-Surgical units on the

within the Gundersen Lutheran community. 

I believe our broader external 

constituency will be very impressed 

with the response from our doctors, 

nurses, board members, employees and 

institutional entities,” he added. 

An eye-opening experience for healthcare 

officials, board and community 

members, has been to tour the current 

facilities. Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. 

Secretary of Health and Human 

Services, expressed surprise during 

a recent official visit that a hospital 

with some of the best outcomes in the 

country was so dated. With the new 

construction, patients and families will 

continue to receive outstanding care, 

but in buildings with greater privacy 

and comfort. 

When fully complete, the new 

six-story Hospital will include: 

• Private rooms for all patients to 

promote healing and enhance comfort 

for patients and families. 

• A state-of-the-art regional 

Emergency Room. 

• New operating rooms with specialized 

surgical technology and 

expanded pre- and post-op areas 

allowing for better patient privacy and 

service. 

• Improved medical, surgical and 

critical care units. 

• Centralized services for women and 

children, including a new Neonatal 

Intensive Care Unit with all private 

rooms. 

• An energy-efficient design, which 

will help Gundersen Lutheran achieve 

our goal of being 100 percent energy 

independent by 2014. D

In the realm of fundraising, our 

actions and activities are generally 

viewed as transactions—something 

with a beginning and an end. In reality, 

fundraising and philanthropy is so 

much more than that. When each gift 

transaction has concluded, we are called 

upon as stewards to apply those funds 

toward the transformation of the world 

around us by addressing the needs of 

those our Foundation serves. Making 

a charitable gift has the power to be 

transformational—for the giver, for the 

recipient, and for society as a whole. 

I was reminded of this when I 

had the opportunity to meet Joe and 

Rachel Vogel, a young couple from 

Winona. Rachel is 27; Joe was 33 when 

he died on August 6, 2010. Joe had 

been diagnosed and treated for colon 

cancer in 2006; the disease returned 

in 2009 and was treated aggressively. 

Ultimately, Joe and his family decided 

to stop treatment so he could enjoy the

remainder of his life with Rachel and 

spend more quality time with friends 

and family. Joe focused on the future: 

how he could “pay it forward” and help 

others dealing with cancer. With his 

support system of caring friends and 

family, Team Vogel held a fundraiser 

in June to raise money for their cause. 

A portion of proceeds from their event 

was earmarked for cancer research 

sponsored by Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation. 

Meeting Joe was a transformational 

experience. Just ask any of the 

hundreds of people who rallied around 

Team Vogel throughout Joe’s journey

and guidance on issues facing donors in 

today’s economy. It hardly needs saying 

that everyone’s budget for charitable 

giving is spread thin, and has been 

for quite some time. It is under these 

circumstances that we prepare to make 

our year-end appeal for support of our 

mission, and keep hearing two words 

of critical importance to Foundation 

donors: stewardship and passion. 

These words relate so clearly to 

a trend we are seeing among our

Senior Director of Development 

In the midst of these challenging 

economic times, it’s inspiring 

to see how creative Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation donors 

have become in their gifting. This year 

we’ve become the grateful beneficiary 

of an unusual array of gifts—private 

homes, treasured personal property, 

and artistic endeavors—with sale 

proceeds designated for causes near to 

the heart of the individual donor. 

Local author Nelson Richason made 

his first Foundation gift years ago, in 

support of the campaign for Gundersen 

Lutheran’s Cancer Center. We gradually 

became aware of the profound 

benefactors, who are choosing more 

and more to designate their gifts for 

a specific purpose. Understandably, 

they want to know exactly where their 

contribution is going and what it’s 

going to accomplish. They also feel 

more “ownership” in supporting a 

cause that is closely aligned with their 

personal interests or passions. 

A passion speaks to the values and 

life experiences of each donor. Many 

of our friends choose to support our 

overall mission of medical education, 

research and community health 

outreach. Under that broad umbrella 

is a vast array of programs relating to 

more specific donor passions. Hospice 

care. Cancer and heart research. 

Domestic violence. Juvenile diabetes, 

pastoral care, and behavioral health. 

Preserving the environment, and more. 

Matching a donor’s passion to their 

ability to give is what unlocks their 

power for making positive change in 

history of cancer within the Richason 

family. It’s a cause Nelson knows all 

too well, with sisters, nieces and his 

own daughter waging battle with breast 

cancer. His children grew up with 

stories Nelson would make up to entertain 

them; his daughter Kathy urged 

him to publish her favorite story about 

“Joe Hokumo” as a children’s book. 

Now available in print at the hospital 

gift shop, Nelson is giving a portion 

of the proceeds from book sales to 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, 

specifically for cancer research. 

Kathy, a cancer survivor, is participating 

in a Gundersen Lutheran cancer 

study to support our research efforts. 

Speech pathologist Jean Gibson 

struggled with a learning disability and 

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder 

all her life. It went undiagnosed until 

she was in her 40s, so she knows 

firsthand how difficult life can be for 

our world and in the lives of others. It 

makes my work so deeply rewarding 

when I see the incredible joy one can 

receive through the act of giving. 

Why do our benefactors view us 

as good stewards of their hard-earned 

charitable dollars? Because in today’s 

economy, stewardship must go beyond 

respecting the wishes and intentions 

of each donor. We are also responsible 

for the intelligent management of 

their charitable gifts. Further, we must 

achieve, recognize, and communicate 

the results of their generosity with 

clarity and transparency. 

In reality, our year-end appeal 

is actually a year-round process 

that focuses on achieving a better 

understanding of what is in the hearts 

and on the minds of our community. 

We thank you for giving us your trust 

as we face a new year of challenges and 

accomplishments together.

Lutheran. To help the Foundation 

raise funds for a program offering 

vocational guidance to people with 

learning disabilities, Jean donated her 

prized collection of antiques and family 

heirlooms. Her treasures were sold at 

a Foundation-sponsored estate sale 

earlier this fall. 

Although these are not “typical” ways 

we receive gifts from donors, it is a 

generous and imaginative way to help a 

lot of people and create a unique legacy.

Happenings 

A WARM Response to 

Physician Shortages 

As reported in our spring issue of 

Pathfinders, Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation welcomed its first 

cohort of students from the Wisconsin 

Academy of Rural Medicine (WARM) 

in July of this year. The program is 

a new offering by the University of 

Wisconsin School of Medicine and 

Public Health to encourage selected 

medical school graduates to practice in 

rural areas of the state. 

Since arriving at Gundersen Lutheran, 

our eight WARM students have been 

introduced to some real-life experiences 

as a practicing rural physician. A farm 

in Decorah, Iowa will be the setting for 

a silo accident drill so that students can 

react to the situation. The community 

also participates in this exercise utilizing 

the local fire department, ambulance 

service, and community hospital.

area, has been gaining valuable insight at 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Whitehall Clinic. 

“I’ve been able to participate in a variety 

of experiences from outpatient care in 

the clinics and trauma care in the emergency 

department to screening for 

exercise-induced asthma in the schools,” 

says Michelle. “I think the broad range 

of my experiences will contribute to my 

ability to practice well-rounded medicine 

as a family physician.” 

Clinical training is divided between 

Gundersen Lutheran rural regional 

sites and the La Crosse and Onalaska 

campuses. Once a month, all eight 

students are brought together for core 

days in La Crosse to enhance their 

WARM experience. We’ll follow their 

progress and share additional WARM 

updates in future issues. 

Dr. Connelly Recognized for Distinguished Service 

At the fall meeting of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive 

Surgery (ABFPRS), Dr. Mark V. Connelly, chairman of Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation, was honored with the Larry D. Schoenrock Distinguished Service Award 

for 2010. The award is given annually to recognize an individual who has made 

significant contributions to the integrity of the examination and certification programs 

for facial plastic surgery. Dr. Connelly has an active facial plastic surgery practice at 

Gundersen Lutheran and has served in various capacities on the ABFPRS Credentials 

Committee since 1998, including terms as committee chair from 2003–2009. During his 

years as ABFPRS Credentials Committee chair, Dr. Connelly guided almost one-third 

of the 990 diplomats who are currently certified by the ABFPRS. “His work for this 

committee speaks volumes about Mark’s ongoing commitment to uphold and expand the 

exacting standards that our certification program represents,” says ABFPRS president 

Ira D. Papel, MD. In addition to his continuing duties on the Credentials Committee as a 

senior advisor, Dr. Connelly also serves as ABFPRS vice president.

Global Partners Reach Out, 

Build Bridges 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Global Partners program works 

to develop long-term, sustainable relationships and 

community-to-community partnerships that extend 

beyond our traditional borders. Launched in 2008, 

the program’s efforts are currently focused in three 

locations: Tanzania, Nicaragua, and Pine Ridge 

Reservation in South Dakota. At each site, Global 

Partners is facilitating the development of medical 

services, education support, public health initiatives and 

related resources. Participants return from their travels 

with the knowledge they can change the world outside 

their normal day-to-day activities. 

The program is fueled by local volunteers who pay 

their own expenses; additional funding is provided 

by Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Some 

examples of how donations to the Global Partners 

Program fund make a difference in our partner 

communities include: 

• $25/month covers tuition for a high school student 

in Nicaragua 

• $50 provides fruit for 100 patients at the 

Porcupine Clinic 

• $275 buys a tire for the health center vehicle in 

Tanzania 

A fundraising/friend-raising dinner was held at 

Pettibone Resort on Sept. 16 to continue building 

awareness among the community groups that team up 

with Global Partners, including local education and

Claire and Don Peterson 

Unveiling a Grand Gift 

On Sept. 27, a special celebration was held in the 

Gundersen Lutheran La Crosse Clinic Lobby atrium to 

dedicate a beautiful grand piano donated by Foundation 

benefactors Claire and Don Peterson of Onalaska. A 

passion for piano music, gratitude for the long history of 

care they’ve received at Gundersen Lutheran, and concern 

for the well-being of others inspired the Petersons’ gift. 

Their vision was to create a special environment for 

patients and visitors where peaceful piano music would 

continually play to comfort all who listened. Through 

the experts at Leithold Music in La Crosse, the Petersons 

selected a magnificent Yamaha player piano to be enjoyed 

in its new home at Gundersen Lutheran. The brief 

dedication program was followed by a demonstration of the 

piano’s superb musical “voice” which can now be heard at 

any time of day in this light and airy space.

Meet the Rose Sisters 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care 

is now home to 11 Rose Sisters. These specially designed art 

pieces were created by local professional artist, Eva Marie 

Restel. Inspired by her mother’s breast cancer journey through 

diagnosis, treatment and healing, Eva Marie designed these 

themed ceramic figures to encapsulate that process. 

Each Rose Sister conveys compassion and understanding for 

what the patient, caregivers, family and friends experience 

while facing breast cancer. They promote a calming and 

peaceful environment that encourages healing, reduces 

stress and fosters a sense of community among all who visit. 

These special sculptures were adopted by generous friends 

of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation and in return, 

named for special people in their lives. An unveiling reception 

was held on Oct. 21 to celebrate this unique project, with the 

Rose Sisters serving as honorary hosts.

Mobile mammography improves 

access to screenings 

At multiple locations through 

Gundersen Lutheran’s three state, 

20 county service region, Gundersen 

Lutheran’s Mobile Mammography 

Unit is serving many women who 

otherwise might not have the 

screening performed. Early detection 

through screening mammograms 

greatly improves treatment options 

and helps save lives. 

Accepting all comers, including the uninsured and underinsured, the 40 foot RV facility 

studied 1,200 women in 2009 at 14 different locations. 

Gundersen Lutheran Health System and Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation are 

the major contributors to the $1,000,000 project. Since 2008, Mobile Mammography has 

screened 2,775 patients and diagnosed five new breast cancers. At the completion of the 

first five years of operation, projections are that the mobile unit will be screening 5,000 

women per year.
