<strong>The</strong> following pages show examples of individual packaging solutions as well as two different standard housings<br />
that can be used as evaluation platforms together with our <strong>3U</strong> CompactPCI ® product range – from a PowerPC ®<br />
5200 based F12N consuming 1 Watt up to the latest Intel ® Core TM 2 <strong>Duo</strong> <strong>SBC</strong> consuming 47 Watts. With a 4-slot<br />
backplane in the standard compact desktop or wall-mount system (0701-0046) up to an 8-slot backplane in the<br />
standard rack-mount system (0701-0021) the range of available single-board computers can also be combined<br />
with any kind of additional I/O functionality.<br />
Whenever required we define and propose individual packaging tailored to the needs of the application in terms of<br />
performance, functionality and environmental conditions. Only a perfect knowledge of the final application allows<br />
to configure the optimum system from the board-level content to power management, including appropriate<br />
testing according to CE and environmental qualification.<br />
A small footprint system, for example, can just be built around a 2-slot backplane and a pluggable PSU. Programs<br />
and application may be stored directly on the CPU board in CompactFlash or on a hard disk instead of using extra<br />
space inside the housing. Even if Intel ® -based such a system can be installed without forced air cooling, destined<br />
to work in a -40 to +85°C temperature environment. Passive heat sinks take the power dissipation of the critical<br />
parts out of the system.<br />
Larger systems can for example be equipped with backplanes of up to eight slots or more, also supporting rear I/O<br />
via the backplane. Appropriate ventilation, power supplies and additional room for mass storages is considered<br />
depending on the application.<br />
Depending on the board combination in the system power supplies can reach from a low-cost firmly installed<br />
ATX up to pluggable models, delivering between 35 Watts up to 350 Watts and more. Depending on the type of<br />
application the technical requirements for the PSU may be different in terms of voltage input ranges, AC or DC<br />
supply, safety aspects (monitoring, self diagnosis) and environment (operation temperature, shock, vibration,<br />
humidity). For handling and maintenance purposes it may be necessary to use pluggable PSUs.<br />
More complex systems are built for example to support multiprocessing or hardware clusters based on a variety<br />
of tailored backplanes. For safety-critical and mission-critical applications we configure any kind of redundancy<br />
structure like 2oo3 or 2oo4 systems.<br />
Finally we offer CompactPCI ® to CompactPCI ® <strong>Express</strong> hybrid systems that combine the efficiency of a parallel bus<br />
system with the advantages of fast serial data transfer (as described on page 35).<br />
