MEN Mikro Elektronik offers a wide product range of CompactPCI ® and CompactPCI ® <strong>Express</strong> single-board<br />

computers in single Eurocard format based on Intel ® and PowerPC ® architectures for robust industrial and<br />

embedded applications.<br />

In addition to traditional industrial PC functions like real-time clock or watchdogs for temperature and voltage<br />

control, many boards provide the newest technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet, SATA or GSM/GPS. Memory and<br />

mass storage on offer include standard DRAM, non-volatile SRAM or FRAM, CompactFlash ® , NAND Flash and<br />

on-board hard disks for program storage.<br />

Many boards also offer mezzanine slots for flexible and individual I/O extension or are equipped with an FPGA<br />

for the implementation of additional customer-specific functions.<br />

By using the new CompactPCI ® <strong>Express</strong> bus system with serial instead of parallel data transfer MEN opens up<br />

completely new possibilities. Data is transferred via point-to-point connections with a data transfer rate of up to<br />

4 Gbytes/s. <strong>The</strong> complete bidirectionality of CompactPCI ® <strong>Express</strong> enables simultaneous transmitting and receiving.<br />

<strong>The</strong> use of a hybrid backplane allows a smooth migration from CompactPCI ® to CompactPCI ® <strong>Express</strong>.<br />

For application in harsh environmental conditions MEN’s CompactPCI ® boards are specially developed, qualified<br />

and tested – regarding shock, vibration, resonance, humidity and chemicals for an operation temperature<br />

from -40 up to +85°C. Complete CompactPCI ® /<strong>Express</strong> systems are wired, tested with Schroff ® mechanics and<br />

backplanes and delivered in an individual configuration.<br />

Intel ® -based <strong>3U</strong> CompactPCI ® Boards<br />

A highlight of the MEN product range is the Intel ® -based <strong>3U</strong> CompactPCI ® product family. <strong>The</strong> performance of these<br />

boards ranges from the latest Core TM 2 <strong>Duo</strong> (2.2 GHz) down to the ultra low power Celeron ® M 373 (1.0 GHz).<br />

Thanks to this family concept, expensive and time-consuming system adaptations are not needed anymore.<br />

<strong>The</strong> intercompatible Intel ® -based boards enable a smooth migration to the next higher processor generation.<br />

Existing system and software solutions can be continued to be used. If the performance of a running system has to<br />

be increased the existing single-board computer can be replaced by a new member of the MEN product family with<br />

a higher performance. A special feature of these Intel ® -based boards is the extendibility of the I/O functions using<br />

different side cards. Depending on requirements the performance range can be extended by additional legacy I/O<br />

interfaces, multimedia functions, additional USB interfaces or FireWire for fast data transfer. Long-term availability<br />

of at least five years from product start and RoHS conformity guarantee that the user’s project is future-safe which<br />

is a requirement in many embedded applications.<br />

Another product highlight based on Intel ® is the F11N. It is a perfect computing platform for infotainment, control<br />

or monitoring applications and combines the advantages of the FPGA technology and the low power versions of<br />

the Intel ® Celeron ® / Pentium ® III. Thanks to the Altera ® Cyclone TM FPGA customer-specific functions can be realized<br />

flexibly and individually on the board. Depending on requirements, the needed IP cores can be compiled from<br />

the MEN function library and be newly configured, combined with IP cores from other manufacturers or newly<br />

developed. Thanks to a long-term availability until at least 2011 and RoHS conformity the F11N ensures that the<br />

user’s project is future-safe.<br />

Industrial communication – wired or wireless – is an important mainstay in our time. Technologies such as GSM,<br />

GPS, WLAN or Ethernet are used especially in mobile applications. MEN provides a number of CompactPCI ® boards<br />

also for this segment.<br />

While the F209L, for instance, supports the WLAN IEEE 802.11b standard for WEP encryption, data transmission<br />

and an output power of 20 dBm, the F210 offers a combination of GPS, GSM and UARTs.<br />

With a wide selection of CompactPCI ® boards for industrial communication MEN products are also a perfect choice<br />

<strong>The</strong> following pages show examples of individual packaging solutions as well as two different standard housings<br />

that can be used as evaluation platforms together with our <strong>3U</strong> CompactPCI ® product range – from a PowerPC ®<br />

5200 based F12N consuming 1 Watt up to the latest Intel ® Core TM 2 <strong>Duo</strong> <strong>SBC</strong> consuming 47 Watts. With a 4-slot<br />

backplane in the standard compact desktop or wall-mount system (0701-0046) up to an 8-slot backplane in the<br />

standard rack-mount system (0701-0021) the range of available single-board computers can also be combined<br />

with any kind of additional I/O functionality.<br />

Whenever required we define and propose individual packaging tailored to the needs of the application in terms of<br />

performance, functionality and environmental conditions. Only a perfect knowledge of the final application allows<br />

to configure the optimum system from the board-level content to power management, including appropriate<br />

testing according to CE and environmental qualification.<br />

A small footprint system, for example, can just be built around a 2-slot backplane and a pluggable PSU. Programs<br />

and application may be stored directly on the CPU board in CompactFlash or on a hard disk instead of using extra<br />

space inside the housing. Even if Intel ® -based such a system can be installed without forced air cooling, destined<br />

to work in a -40 to +85°C temperature environment. Passive heat sinks take the power dissipation of the critical<br />

parts out of the system.<br />

Larger systems can for example be equipped with backplanes of up to eight slots or more, also supporting rear I/O<br />

via the backplane. Appropriate ventilation, power supplies and additional room for mass storages is considered<br />

depending on the application.<br />

Depending on the board combination in the system power supplies can reach from a low-cost firmly installed<br />

ATX up to pluggable models, delivering between 35 Watts up to 350 Watts and more. Depending on the type of<br />

application the technical requirements for the PSU may be different in terms of voltage input ranges, AC or DC<br />

supply, safety aspects (monitoring, self diagnosis) and environment (operation temperature, shock, vibration,<br />

humidity). For handling and maintenance purposes it may be necessary to use pluggable PSUs.<br />

More complex systems are built for example to support multiprocessing or hardware clusters based on a variety<br />

of tailored backplanes. For safety-critical and mission-critical applications we configure any kind of redundancy<br />

structure like 2oo3 or 2oo4 systems.<br />

Finally we offer CompactPCI ® to CompactPCI ® <strong>Express</strong> hybrid systems that combine the efficiency of a parallel bus<br />

system with the advantages of fast serial data transfer (as described on page 35).<br />

PCI <strong>Express</strong> TM is the future of data transfer. In order to achieve a higher transfer rate, data is not transferred in<br />

parallel anymore but serially. A point-to-point connection with up to 4 Gbytes/s can be realized.<br />

This new bus standard among other things is a special feature of MEN’s Intel ® -based product family. <strong>The</strong> I/O<br />

functionality of the intercompatible single-board computers (from Celeron ® M, 1 GHz up to the newest Core TM 2<br />

<strong>Duo</strong>, 2.2 GHz) can be extended via different side cards. One of these, the F602, has a special function. Combined<br />

with this side card and a hybrid backplane the CompactPCI ® system slot boards F14, F15, F17 or F18 can be<br />

turned into system slot boards for CompactPCI ® <strong>Express</strong>. Thus mixed CompactPCI ® /CompactPCI ® <strong>Express</strong> systems<br />
