IX.<br />

UNDERGROUND SERVICE<br />

900. GENERAL<br />

The <strong>Company</strong> will, subject to the availability of material<br />

and transformers, and in compliance with certain special<br />

requirements hereinafter described, provide underground service<br />

directly from its distribution lines.<br />

For added protection and ease of cable replacement,<br />

the<br />

<strong>Company</strong> strongly recommends that all underground cables<br />

be installed in conduit. Any direct buried primary cable shall<br />

not be permitted within five (5) feet of the traveled way.<br />

Contact the <strong>Company</strong>'s local Service Center or Marketing &<br />

Sales (M&S) Department for conduit installation<br />

details not<br />

contained<br />

in this handbook.<br />

All installations connected to <strong>Company</strong> owned facilities<br />

shall comply with the installation specifications contained herein.<br />

These requirements<br />

are based on the NESC or NEC, and<br />

considered<br />

to be good engineering practice.<br />

The Illustrations in Section XII of this handbook provide<br />

the<br />

required trench, riser and transformer foundation details.<br />

Direct-buried conductors and cables emerging from grade<br />

shall<br />

be protected from damage in accordance with NEC 310.5<br />

(D) (1).<br />

Any work listed as being the “responsibility” of the<br />

customer means<br />

that the customer will be required to complete<br />

the<br />

work involved<br />

to meet <strong>Company</strong><br />

s tandards and specifications.<br />

All<br />

work perfor<br />

med by the customer shall be subject to inspection<br />

by the <strong>Company</strong> pri or to energizing t he installation.<br />
