Best <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red Army Chorus (CD) �<br />

The 1989 LP is finally on CD: Dark Eyes, <strong>the</strong> Volga Boat Song, Moscow<br />

Nights, and even <strong>the</strong> old Soviet an<strong>the</strong>m. By far <strong>the</strong> best-sounding disc<br />

<strong>of</strong> this legendary ensemble.<br />

Cuban-born Carolos Placeres, with songs incorporating Cuban<br />

rhythm with influences <strong>of</strong> Africa and lots <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r places. Six musicians<br />

in all, and all acoustic.<br />

Bach: C<strong>of</strong>fee Cantata (CD)<br />

The celeb<strong>rate</strong>d Tafelmusik ensemble does two secular cantat<strong>as</strong><br />

(inluding Pe<strong>as</strong>ant Cantata). Fine singers, lifelike sound!<br />

Mozart: Soprano Ari<strong>as</strong> (CD)<br />

Soprano Lyne Fortin, with <strong>the</strong> Orchestre Métropolitain, totally at e<strong>as</strong>e<br />

with all three soprano roles from The Marriage <strong>of</strong> Figaro (including a<br />

duet with herself!).<br />

Handel (CD) �<br />

Superb soprano Karina Gauvin is joined by <strong>the</strong> Toronto chamber<br />

ensemble Tafelmusik in a series <strong>of</strong> glowing excerpts from Handel’s<br />

“Alcina” and “Agrippina.” The sound is smooth and lifelike, with an<br />

acute sense <strong>of</strong> place.<br />

Little Notebook <strong>of</strong> Anna Magdalana Bach (CD) �<br />

More than 30 delightful pieces, most by Bach himself. Soprano Karina<br />

Gauvin’s magnificent voice is mated to Luc Beauséjour’s excellent<br />

harpsichord work. The sound is deep, detailed and warm, truly <strong>of</strong><br />

audiophile quality.<br />

Vivaldi: Motets for Soprano (CD) �<br />

In this disc by wonderful soprano Karina Gauvin, she tackles <strong>the</strong><br />

gorgeous but very difficult vocal music <strong>of</strong> Vivaldi: two motets and a<br />

psalm. It is a moving interpretation, on this jewel <strong>of</strong> a recording.<br />

work, great rhythm, all-acoustic backup. Great sound, too.<br />

You Can’t Take My Blues (CD) �<br />

Singer/songwriter Doug MacLeod and his colleagues present <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> most satisfying blues records ever made, with touching words and<br />

devilish rhythms. Mostly acoustic instruments.<br />

Is this ever a surprising disc! Violinist Marc Bélanger worked up <strong>the</strong>se<br />

string études for his music students, but <strong>the</strong>y actually deserve to be<br />

put out on a gold audiophile disc! The more strings he adds, <strong>the</strong> better<br />

it gets.<br />

E<strong>as</strong>ygoing modern jazz by Rémi Bolduc and his quartet, on this gold<br />

disc. Some exceptional guitar and b<strong>as</strong>s solos.<br />

Musique Guy St-Onge (CD)<br />

One-man band St-Onge plays dozens <strong>of</strong> instruments — scores for<br />

fourteen films which never existed outside <strong>of</strong> his imagination. Fun<br />

pretext, clever, attractive music that makes you wish you could see<br />

<strong>the</strong> films!<br />

Seven Come Eleven (24/96 DVD)<br />

Herb Ellis and Ray Brown again, but this time with guitarist Joe<br />

P<strong>as</strong>s (he and Ellis alternate playing lead and rhythm), and a third<br />

guitarist, Jake Hanna. This is a live recording from <strong>the</strong> 1974 Concord<br />

Jazz Festival.<br />

Soular Energy (24-96 DVD/ 24-192 DVD-Audio) �<br />

Perhaps <strong>the</strong> world’s greatest b<strong>as</strong>sist, <strong>the</strong> late Ray Brown, playing with<br />

pianist Gene Harris, whom Brown called <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greats. The pro<strong>of</strong><br />

is right on this 24/96 recording, made from <strong>the</strong> analog m<strong>as</strong>ter. Side 2<br />

does <strong>the</strong> sound, <strong>of</strong> <strong>as</strong>tonishing quality!<br />

Carmina Burana (CD)<br />

The celeb<strong>rate</strong>d Carl Orff oratorio sends chills down your spine, thanks<br />

to <strong>the</strong> huge orchestra, gigantic choir, and <strong>of</strong> course <strong>the</strong> clarity and<br />

depth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Klavier sound.<br />

Obseción (CD)<br />

The Trio Amadé plays Piazzola, Berstein, Copland, and Emilion<br />

Cólon…who is <strong>the</strong> trio cellist. The Colón and Piazzola is definitely<br />

worth <strong>the</strong> price <strong>of</strong> admission. Lifelike sound.<br />

Misbehavin’ (CD)<br />

The superb Denver Br<strong>as</strong>s does Gershwin (Cuban Overture, Porgy and<br />

Bess), plus On <strong>the</strong> Town, Sweet Georgia Brown, and <strong>of</strong> course Ain’t<br />

Misbehavin’. Great sound.<br />

Hemispheres (CD)<br />

The North Tex<strong>as</strong> Wind Symphony with new music by contemporary<br />

composers who know how to thrill. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best wind band sound<br />

available.<br />

Illuminations (CD)<br />

Absolutely great chamber musicians take on music by Villa-Lobos,<br />

Malcolm Arnold, and some composers you may not know but you’ll<br />

wish you did. Sublime sound, nothing less.<br />

Mozart Serenade and Divertimenti (CD)<br />

Lowell Graham (<strong>of</strong> Center Stage fame, Wilson Audio) conducts a<br />

glowing version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se pieces, including <strong>the</strong> famous “Grand Partita.”<br />

The engineering, by Bruce Leek, is absolutely first-<strong>rate</strong>.<br />

Kickin’ <strong>the</strong> Clouds Away (CD)<br />

Gershwin died more than 60 years ago, but you can hear him playing<br />

piano in glowing stereo. Nineteen <strong>of</strong> his pieces are on this fine CD,<br />

including a solo piano version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rhapsody in Blue.<br />
