LEGIOKILL
What are Legionella?
Deadly risk from the tap
Legionella bacteria and the Legionnaire’s disease they cause continue to
make headlines for all the wrong reasons.
According to the Austrian Agency for Public Health and Food Safety
(AGES), 108 people contracted Legionnaire’s disease (legionellosis) in 2007
in Austria alone, with the estimated number of unreported cases likely to
be high as the disease is not always diagnosed correctly. Eleven people
actually died of the illness, a disease attributed to a lack of water hygiene.
There were thousands of cases right across Europe.
According to AGES, Legionnaire‘s disease was the cause of 7 deaths in
Austria in 2008.
Legionellae are rod-shaped bacteria whose natural habitat is fresh water. „Legionella pneumophila“, the most prevalent form of
legionellae by far, is particularly dangerous to humans. This bacteria is found in minimal, generally non-pathogenic quantities
not only in groundwater or surface water, but also in man-made water supply systems, i.e. in drinking water. There are virtually
no problems with Legionella bacteria under 18° C. The situation is quite diff erent with water temperatures between 25° C and
50° C: At these temperatures the micro-organisms replicate quickly and do not die until temperatures exceed 60° C.
Therefore, these bacteria that are deadly to humans once they reach a certain concentration fi nd a perfect breeding ground
where heated water is being employed, for instance in shower and swimming pool pipelines or in air-conditioning systems
with humidifi ers. The Legionella bacteria will breed rapidly even if water only remains in pipes overnight. Water is deemed to
be contaminated and dangerous once the bacterial count reaches 100 germs per 100 ml. Urgent measures are then
required.
A particular risk exists above all in large, complex water systems of buildings such as hospitals,
retirement villages, hotels or wellness facilities, with a very high risk of illness from the
Legionella bacteria being found especially among the sick and the weak, as is to be expected.
The presence of Legionella bacteria is also possible in the private sphere, such as in whirlpools
or air-conditioners.
Experts agree that there must be regular monitoring of systems and/or open cooling towers in
hospitals, care facilities, swimming pools and wellness facilities in order to prevent the spread
of bacteria. These are required by law and must be checked and documented by hygiene
offi cers.
Legiokill - Combating Legionella thermally without the risk
of scalding
Various methods are available to combat Legionella bacteria, ranging from chlorination and thermal approaches to ultraviolet
radiation. The Legiokill product employs thermal disinfection, guaranteeing the reliable extermination of Legionella bacteria
without any chemical additives whatsoever.
The system, an Austrian invention, off ers users the possibility of employing automatic thermal disinfection and features unique
100% protection against scalding.
Flushing can be conducted on an individual or group basis in buildings with numerous rooms, with the duration and temperature
of the fl ushing procedure being recorded in detail. This means that all procedures can be perfectly monitored by the hygiene
offi cer. The new Legiokill system therefore fulfi ls the requirements of ÖNORM B 5019 in terms of hygiene-relevant planning,
installation, operation, maintenance, monitoring and sanitisation of central potable water heating facilities.
LEGIOKILL
Legionellosis - A risk to humans
Simply consuming water infected with Legionella bacteria does not generally constitute
a risk in itself. However, if the infected water enters the lungs in the form of water vapour
(inhalation of aerosols containing the pathogen), a person can contract Legionnaire’s
disease (Legionellosis). This illness presents with the symptoms of severe pneumonia,
i.e. coughing, high fever, chills, fatigue and headache. If Legionnaire’s disease is treated
incorrectly or too late (because it can be easily confused with normal pneumonia), the
Legionella bacteria spread to the whole body. The bacteria can then damage the digestive
tract and nervous system. Other possible consequences include diarrhoea, disorientation
and hepatic and renal dysfunction. Despite treatment with antibiotics, the mortality rate
is very high at around 10-15% of all cases.
The disease cannot be transmitted from one person to another.
Those most at risk are
-> people with a weakened immune system
-> people over 50 years of age
-> people with high alcohol and tobacco consumption
-> people with chronic lung disease
LEGIOKILL
An Austrian invention
Legiokill, the new system of Legionella prevention invented by Austrian specialists, is patented in Austria and has an
international patent pending. In addition to providing protection against Legionella bacteria, the inventors wanted to
provide protection against scalding. Legiokill was developed especially to meet the requirements of hospitals and clinics,
care facilities, hotels and accommodation facilities, kindergartens, spa resorts and other health care and wellness facilities.
Naturally, it can also be employed in apartment blocks and single family dwellings. The system fulfi ls all prescribed standards
for such devices. For instance, pursuant to ÖNORM B 5019 the precautionary scald protection measures must be installed
within 6 metres of the discharge outlet.
Safety again scalding
An outstanding feature of Legiokill is its 100%
protection against scalding by overheated hot water.
After all, two percent of all third degree scalding is
caused by excessively hot tap water. That amounts
to 270 cases in Austria every year. With Legiokill you
are on the safe side, because the system prevents
excessively hot water at the discharge point, while at
the same time preventing Legionella bacteria.
(z.B. Thermostatarmaturen, temperaturbegrenzbare Einhandmischer).
LEGIOKILL – The innovative solution for killing Legionella bacteria
The Legiokill system kills Legionella bacteria by thermal means, with the pipes being fl ushed at precisely predefi ned
temperatures. The thermal disinfection method employed delivers not only the ecological benefi ts associated with the absence
of chemicals, but also provides absolute protection against scalding.
The time required to fl ush one of two water outlets is about 15 minutes. The patented Legiokill system also allows you to
document the fl ushing process in detail. This means that you can easily comply with and fi ll out the monitoring schedule
prescribed by ÖNORM B 5019.
A further advantage: The installation of the Legiokill module does not require any extra space and can be performed very
simply in new systems in particular. Legiokill pays for itself within 3-4 years purely through savings in personnel and water
costs.
