more definite in the non limed treatments. Under calcium carbonate treatment, a
significant yield-increment could be observed in all treatment combinations.
Nickel contamination had a significant yield-reducing effect in the sum of the two cuts
at P = 0.1 %. In unlimed treatments, a dosage of 100 mg kg -1 Ni had a stronger reducing
effect than the smaller dosage. Data of the table also indicate that in the average of N
treatments, the harmful effect of nickel was strong in the unlimed treatments (yieldreduction
from 5.29 g pot -1 to 1.26 g pot -1 ), while in the limed treatments, the effect was
much weaker (yield-reduction from 5.90 g pot -1 to 5.35 g pot -1 ).
Considering the effect of N treatment, it can be observed that yield-reduction was
smaller both in limed and unlimed treatments when smaller N dosage was applied than
at higher dosages. This is probably due to the fact that plants used more nutrients and
consequently they took up more Ni for producing higher yields.
CaCO3 treatment had a significant effect on yield in all treatment combinations. It
can be stated that as a result of the favourable soil pH casued by liming, the dry matter
production per pot increases. The ratio of this increment is higher than that of the yieldincreasing
effect of nitrogen.
By adding lime, the yield-reducing effect of nickel was reduced or even prevented.
This conclusion is supported by the fact that the significance level of Ni*CaCO3
interaction on shifting sand was P = 0.1 %.
As a continuation of the study, we plan to determine the constitution of elements in
the dry matter of perennial ryegrass. This would enable us to determine how treatments
influenced the uptake of elements by plants. This knowledge can lead to further
conclusions.
