accent on complementarity which benefits by a determinative compatibility in the
administrative-territorial system.
- The Euroregion benefits from a communication network favourable to
complementarity as a basis for economic development.
In the area of the Euroregion the infrastructure of 16 “potential” cross-border roads
exists, out of which three are operative in the international regime (Salonta - Mehkerek,
Borş - Artand and Valea lui Mihai - Nyirabrany) and two are meant for occasional
traffic (Toboliu - Körösnagyhomorog and Săcuieni - Letavertes). Four railroad systems
can be added to these, out of which three are active in the regime of international traffic
(Salonta - Kötegyan, Episcopia Bihor - Biharkeresztes and Valea lui Mihai -
Nyirabrany) (Stamate, G., 1997).
- The Euroregion has a main Romanian-Hungarian ethnic base with a balanced
share of the two ethnic
groups. This ethnic base
is characterised by a
powerful tradition of
cohabitation between the
majority and the local
minorities. Other coinhabiting
nationalities
(fig. 3) can be added, in a
larger or smaller number
on both sides of the
frontier.
- The Euroregion evinces
a higher level of
economic development
as compared to the
average in the Eastern
part of Europe.
- Currently, the
Euroregion includes only
one state frontier sector
(which has a military

function determined by
the NATO membership
of both countries 4 , and a
control function of the people and merchandise fluxes).
- The Romanian-Hungarian border length on the Bihor County’s side is of approx.
166 km, out of which approx. 160 km are on land and 6 km on water. These totalize
about 37% of the entire length of the Romanian-Hungarian border (Stamate G., 1997).
Due to the land support of this frontier sector, there is an active potential for
