BRIGHAM YOUNG
UNIVERSITY
The best word to describe the post-war
growth of BYU is "phenomenal." The school
that was founded in 1875 under the direction
of Karl G. Maeser will register more than
9,000 students during fall quarter. At the
turn of the century the campus occupied
a city block. Today it covers an area of
500 acres, and the growth continues in full
swing.
Directing the administrative affairs of BYU
is Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, alumnus who returned
to campus in 1951 as university president.
During his administration, expansion
has been noted in every direction and new
buildings costing more than $5,500,000 have
been added to university facilities, Tiot including
the Joseph F. Smith building. Many new
projects have been authorized by the Board
of Trustees to keep pace in every way with the
expanding needs of the Church school.

OF UTAH
In February, 1850, less than three years after
the pioneer leaders entered Salt Lake
valley, the University of Deseret was incorporated
as one of the first schools west of
the Mississippi. The U. of U. was reorganized
in 1869 under the direction of Dr. John R.
Park, and today is one of the guiding lights
in higher learning. Transfer of the University
to its present hill-top sight began in 1894,
and the campus area now covers approximately
450 acres.
Under the direction of Dr. A. Ray Olpin,
who became University president in 1946,
Utah has continued to grow and expand in
nearly every direction. It is known in the area
particularly for its College of Medicine. Dr. A. Ray Olpin

NEW STAFF—The task of rebuilding football
at Brigham Young University falls to
this quintet of coaches. Pictured with Head
Coach Hal Kopp (center) are Owen Dixon,
Line Coach; Alan Davis, Backfield Coach;
Tally Stevens, End Coach; and Max Tolbert,
Freshman Coach. Harold Kopp came to
BYU from Rhode Island University.
COUGAR COACHING STAFF
The man chosen to fill the vacancy left by
Charles "Chick" Atkinson, former head coach at
BYU who entered industrial relations last winter,
is Harold W. Kopp. Coach Kopp came to BYU
from Rhode Island University where he pulled the
Rams back into the college football picture with
a four-year record of 25 wins, five losses, and two
ties-
A graduate of Western Maryland, he was line
coach at Browin, Yale, Harvard prior to becoming
head coach at Rhode Island. He holds the rank
of lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve.
One of the first lieutenants acquired by Kopp
was Tally Stevens, former head coach at East High
School. Tally, a native of Wyoming and '49 graduate
of the University of Utah, directed East to three
state championships and a 33-3-1 record. Stevens
was all-conference end for Utes.
Two members of the staff, Line Coach Owen
Dixon and Frosh Coach Max Tolbert, were on last
year's staff. Owen was all-conference guard for
Congars before and after service in World War II.
He led B.Y. High into state "B" finals before joining
athletic staff in 1953. Max, a native of Fayette,
Pa., won letters in four sports before coming to
BYU. He won three letters with Cougars as end,
coached baseball and football at Murray High
before joining staff last year.
Allan Davis, new backfield coach, came to Y.
from Murray High where he was head coach. His
club reached the state finals in 1953, won the
crown in 1954, was defeated by East in '55 playoffs-
A native of Salem, Allan played for Payson,
quarterbacked Utah Redskins, 1945-47.

UTE CHIEFS—Eight veteran coaches direct the
activity at Utah gridiron camp. Left to right, Pete
Carlson, End Coach: Marv Hess, Assistant; Andy
Everest, Freshman Coach; Karl Schleckman, Line
Coach; Jack Curtice, Head Coach; Pres Summerheys,
Backfield Coach; Pete Couch, Assistant
Coach; and Snowy Simpson, Assistant Coach.
REDSKIN COACHING STAFF
When Jack Curtice came to the U. of U. in 1950
as head football coach and athletic director he brought
with him a reputation for wideopen football. Curtice
has toughened the Ute schedule and given the fans
a fine all-around program. A native of Glasgow,
Kentucky, he played both football and basketball at
Transylvania. He coached at West Texas State,
served in Navy during World War II and coached
at Texas School of Mines before coming to Utah.
End Coach Pete Carlson played for Utes in 1931-
33, was a member of Utah championship team for two
years. Carlson is veteran member of the staff.
One of the all-time greats at Utah is Karl Schleckman,
line coach. All-Conference, all-around athlete
in several sports, Karl played in East-West Shrine in
1938, has spent all coaching years at Utah.
A tailback for the Utes in the '20's was Pres Summerhays,
backfield coach. Pres came to hill-top school
from Carbon High School, won state titles in 1938,
and 1951. He also coaches U. diamond squad.
Freshman chores fall to Andy Everst who played
under Jack Curtice at Texas Mines. Andy came to
Uteville from San Angelo High in Texas, has been very
successful in producing strong frosh squads for Utah.
Senior member of +he coaching staff is Sherman
(Pete) Couch, a member of the staff since 1930. Pete
is also head track coach and head of the Men's Physical
Education Department.
"Jack of All Trades" is the title given to Snowy
C. Simpson, newest member of the staff. Snowy assists
with pass defense in football, is top statistician
for basketball squad. Graduated from Kanas State.
A former end for the Utes, Marv Hess assists
Andy Everest with frosh, doubles in track coaching
with Couch, and is full-time instructor in the physical
education department.

THE OTHER HALF OF THE TEAM .
MEET MRS. HAROLD W. KOPP
What's it like to be married to a football coach?
Well, the best answers to this question come from June
Kopp, wife of the Y's new head football coach. The trim, personable
Mrs. Kopp has weathered her share of coaching ups
and downs while Hal was touring Brown, Yale, Harvard and
Rhode Island.
Asked how it feels to be a football widow, she replied,
"the first few years were terrible, but after I learned to get
along with it (football) everything smoothed out." Today the
mutual interest in the pigskin sport is part of the Kopp household.
A native of Maryland, June Kopp, like her father who
was a high school principal, is a devoted teacher. She has spent
15 years of her life teaching, and right now she is teaching
world and American history at Provo High.
Like Hal Kopp, the Mrs. is friendly and sincere, a warm
personality whose rich experiences reflect her special kind of
poise.
The Kopps have one son, Karl, who graduated from Yale
and received a fellowship to Wyoming. At the present time
he is working as a reporter for a daily newspaper in California's
Bay Area, but is expecting a service call from Uncle Sam.
As for ways and means of sharing the coaching burdens
with her husband, June Kopp is no beginner. "When football
season hits, I launch my 'Cater to Coach' program, and I do
just what the title implies. I employ some psychology and do
a hundred things to keep him from getting moody. We live
through a dozen post mortems following a loss, and I sweat
it out right with him. His favorite foods—steak, French fries,
tossed salad and lemon meringue pie—help, too."
How does she like the mountain country? "I love it, it's
marvelous country. We like the people, school, everything. I
hope we'll be here a long while."
So do we.
Diana Dalebout
DADDY IS A HALFBACK
THIS HALF KNEADS DOUGH
Young married couples need dough, but the
Paul Dalebouts (he's a center on the Y football
team) knead more dough than do most families.
Paul and Diana, you see, are employed at the
Dalebouf Bakery, owned by Paul's father.
The Dalebouts (she is the former Diana Snow of
Provo) both graduated from Provo High School in
1954. While their number one objective is to get
Paul through school, they are also investing in a
brand new house.
When Paul graduates with his major in marketing
he expects to go into the bakery business with
his father.
Diana sees every game she possibly can, which,
of course, includes every home game. "When he
does something good, I sure l^t everybody around
me know I'm his wife. But when he misses a tackle
or comes up with a mistake, I remind his father that
Paul is his son," she teased.
Paul's favorite off-season foods (he eats all meals
during the season at the training table) are pizza
pie and rice pudding, according to Diana.
Since Paul injured his ankle (he missed the A&M
game because of it) he has been getting "a little
more attention around the household, but he usually
just stretches out on the couch before a
game, anyway," Diana said.
One of the best organized cheering sections at
BYU is found at the home of Johnny Wood, Cougar
halfback, in Wymount Village. There Johnny's
very charming wife is molding a solid family following
dedicated to proving "Pop is tops!"
As of this season, his rooters number three;
his wife, the former Virginia Rigby of Murray, and
two young sons, Brady, 2|/2. ar| d Scott, four
months. And if the kids in the neighborhood doubt
daddy is a halfback, Brady doesn't hesitate in
dragging out the family press clippings for viewing.
John and Virginia Wood started going together
as sophomores at Murray High School where John
was an all-state footballer. When he entered the
Air Force, Virginia went to work as a model, and
a year later they were married. Following the service
they lived in Cedar City for two years while
John attend CSU (four-year letterman both years).
Right now Virginia is working as a telephone
operator for Mountain States T & T while Johnny
finishes off his senior year at BYU. And if all goes
well with the Wood family, daddy will join the
coaching profession following graduation.
"I love sports," Virginia confessed, "and believe
me, it takes a major disaster to keep me away
from a home game." Virginia Wood and Sons

TONIGHT'S GAME
NO MODERN MIRACLES
The odds for a BYU victory over Utah tonight are
as slim as they've ever been in the 3 I-game gridiron
series between the two rivals. In fact, the manpower
picture of the two opponents is so far out of balance
that there is little visible reason to suppose this will
be the year the Brighams will register that long awaited
upset over Utah. Although we live in a day of modern
miracles, most critics are willing to make an exception
here.
History of the series, long and lopsided as it is,
isn't one on which Cougar fans care to reflect. In 3 I
meetings on the football field with Utah the Cougars
have put the skids under the Ute victory express only
once. That memorable contest, a 12-7 game played
in Salt Lake City, was everything today's BYU fans
can imagine. With the exception of this one five-point
setback, the Utah football record with the Cats is
unspotted-
In many respects the series has been as colorfui
as it has been lopsided. Four tie games—0-0, 6-6, 7-7,
and 28-28—are included in the record, and several
of the more recent games have been exceedingly close.
In 1951 the Utes won, 7-6, and the Thanksgiving Day
game in 1953 was a 33-32 hair-raiser for fans. In
1954 the Cougars were in scoring territory when the
clock ran out, giving the Utes a 12-7 win. But the
greatest game, from the spectators' point of view,
was the 28-28 tie in 1950, the first year Cactus Cur
tice took over at Utah. The unsuspecting southerner
hasn't taken a BYU game lightly since.
Looking at tonight's game, all the big factors will
be favoring the visitors. They have two or three times
the team depth found in the BYU ranks, thanks to 22
returning lettermen. Then, too, the Utah showing
against UCLA indicated plenty of team power.
As for the Brighams, their thin ranks are showing
signs of improving. The Y's scoreless deadlock with
Colorado A&M can be considered a sign the club is
beginning to jell.
If the game goes as expected, it will be Utah
offense vs. BYU defense, and right now there's just
too much of the former for the latter.
Why, then, will some 16,000-plus fans jam the
Cougar stadium tonight to witness this Beehve classic?
It could be that the fans have come to realize that,
despite the apparent hopelessness of the situation,
the Cougars sometimes show their best when it's least
expected.
Be that as it may, the fans are assured the one
thing that will bring them back again next year—
traditional Skyline football at its best.
Coming—the greatest musical event of 1956, the Berlin
Philharmonic Orchestra — Nov. 8, BYU Fieldhouse.
