CULTURAL EXCHANGE
IN THE 20TH CENTURY
Dr. phil. habil. Karl-Heinz Füssl of the
Technical University Berlin has recently
published a book that might interest readers
who want to know more about the give
and take of cultural influence across the
Atlantic in the last century. The book,
Deutsch-amerikanischer Kulturaustausch im
20. Jahrhundert, looks at the alternating
cultural influence Germany had on the
U.S. and the U.S. on Germany in areas
such as education, science, and cultural
politics. He discusses, among other themes,
the influence the post-1933 immigration
of intellectuals from Germany to the United
States had on both countries. Füssl’s book
is published by the Campus-Verlag (Frankfurt/Main
and New York) and will appear
in German.
MAKING THE MEDIEVALIST
CIRCUIT
Two abstracts resulting from Fulbright
grantee Steven Rozenski’s research at the
University of Cologne have been accepted
to conferences. “The Uses of the Vernacular
in the Works of Meister Eckhart and
Henry Suso” will be presented at the International
Medieval Congress 2004 at the
University of Leeds, UK, and “Von Aller
Bilden Bildlosekeit: The Trouble with Images
of Heaven in the Works of Henry Suso”
was accepted to the University of Bristol
(UK) conference, “Envisaging Heaven in
the Middle Ages,” to be held in July.
Rozenski studied English and Religion
at Northwestern University in Evanston,
Illinois, before receiving a Master of Theology
from the University of Glasgow in
Scotland. He is currently studying under
Ursula Peters at the University of Cologne
Institute for German Language and Literature
on a 2003 Fulbright scholarship.

PUBLISH WORKING PAPERS
The 2003 German Studies Seminar,
“Challenges of Demographics,” sparked
lively discussion amongst its participants
and now it has spawned its first publica-

tion. Edited by grantee Dr. Richard R. Verdugo,
the publication, “The Challenges of
Demographics in Germany: Selected Policy
Discussions,” is a collection of working
papers written by Seminar participants and
focusing on aspects of demographics that
were raised during the three-week study
tour. Following publication of the working
papers, a special issue of Population Research
and Policy Review, a demography journal,
will take them up. Verdugo and fellow participant
Richard Young will serve as guest
editors.
