Here they give us a short glimpse into their research projects. Kareem Abu-Zaid I began translating the Syrian-born poet Adonis in a creative writing workshop conducted by the American poet C.K. Williams at Princeton University in the spring of 2003. Although I worked primarily on French poetry, Williams had asked me to find some Arabic texts to give a new dimension to his course. I turned to the poetry of Adonis (born Ali Ahmad Said in 1930). His book Songs of Mihyar the Damascene was nothing short of a revolution when it first appeared in 1961—a revolution in the language and forms of Arabic poetry, which is meant to bring about a revolution in Arab thought. It has inspired numerous translations and garnered Adonis worldwide attention, and yet no one has translated the book in its entirety into English. Not yet, at least. Since June of 2003, I have been working with Ivan Eubanks, a friend and doctoral student specializing in translation at Princeton. For many months now, we have been translating and re-translating all of

A final manuscript should be ready by the end of the summer (2004), and then begins the process of finding a publisher for our book. The project, more difficult and timeconsuming than I could have ever imagined at its outset last June, has been an immensely rewarding one. I was fortunate enough to be offered a Fulbright Enterprise Scholarship to do research under Professor Dr. Jochen Hörisch at the University of Mannheim. Not only has the Enterprise Scholarship provided me with the time and resources needed for my project, it has also given me the opportunity to study under Professor Hörisch, one of Germany’s leading scholars. I have been in Mannheim since September of 2003, and have been centering my research here on the German thinkers that have had the greatest influence on Adonis: Nietzsche, Heidegger, Rilke and Hölderlin, among others.
