Welcome from the Lord Mayor Christian Ude
As Lord Mayor of Munich I have supported the application to organize the
EuroGames here in 2004 from the very beginning, and I am very pleased to
take on the role of Patron.
There are many indicators of the tolerance and liberal community spirit that
have come to characterize Munich. The vitality and self-confidence with
which the gay and lesbian community has established itself in our city is one
of the most gratifying signs.
The volunteer organizers of the EuroGames 2004 have achieved a great
deal. Thanks to a broad spectrum of attractive sporting competitions at firstclass
venues, the EuroGames in Munich are able to announce a new record
for the number of participants – well over 5,000 athletes from 38 countries
have registered. As well as the competitions themselves, a wide-ranging
accompanying program of culture and entertainment has been organized,
which is certain to be received with enthusiasm by the 20,000 visitors.
The EuroGames 2004 in Munich are intended not only for the lesbian and
gay community, but for a broader public, and I strongly endorse this idea. For
a whole week in the summer of 2004 the EuroGames will transform the city
and the Olympic Park into a showcase for Europe – fully in keeping with the
motto of these EuroGames: „Munich s’ports the rainbow“.
As the Lord Mayor of the City of Munich, the capital of Bavaria, I am looking
forward to being able to welcome you to our city on this occasion.
