Expedition – the basis
Dear Readers,
In the last edition of our customer magazine I introduced
our new shareholder Jacquet Metal
Service (JMS) and the structure of the JMS Group
to you. At the same time I announced the increasing
interna tionalisation of the Stappert brand. We
translated this idea into reality at the start of 2012
by inte grating four further companies into the
Stappert organisation. They all offer the complete
product portfolio of stainless, highlycorrosionand
heatresistant steels of the “… nature of steel”
and are thus able to provide inspiration to their
own markets. We will introduce you to one of our
new subsidiaries, TRD Inox in this edition of the
cus tomer magazine.
On the product side we will continue to focus on
expanding the fittings and special grades
segments. We believe that the market poten tial
has not yet been exhausted in these segments and
that we can offer our customers genuine competitive
advantages, the more so as the integration of
TRD Inox and Noxon has enabled us to gain new
Expedition – the basis
A good atmosphere brings
success
When the berlin Wall fell over 20 years ago, many companies headed for berlin to make money quickly. but they soon came to re
cognise that if you want to be successful then you need not only excellent specialist skills but also dedication and a dash of humour.
That is at least the recipe for success of the team in the Stappert sales office in berlin.
The team in Berlin: Ingo Mann, Peggy Schilhabel, Sascha Jürgensen,
Monika Gerth, Michael Bröcker und Mirco Riemer
On 1st of January 1991 the
Stappert sales office Berlin took
up its work under the direction of
Rainer Zimmermann. Initially it
occupied premises on Storkower
Straße in the Prenzlauer Berg
district. In 2000 Michael Bröcker
took over responsibility for the
sales office Berlin, and he still has
a clear recollection of his first impressions:
“Given the ex tremely
weak eco nomic environment the
steel market in the capi tal was
very competitive in those days,
and the feel ings between the
participants were more than
tense.” But the Rhinelander, who
has worked for Stappert since
1986 and moved from Düsseldorf
to the banks of the Spree, did not
want to simply accept that. He
encouraged the dealers and end
consumers to trust in a partnerlike
cooperation, thus helping,
little by little, to relieve the tension
in the atmosphere.
Travelling between
the big city and the
provinces
In addition to the lively steel market
in Berlin itself, the sales team
is also responsible for the entire
Region Northeast, which extends
from Usedom to the Luther city of
Wittenberg, and from Helmstedt
in the west to the Polish border
in the east. For external appointments
the colleagues from Berlin
sometimes need to schedule two
days to cover the large distances,
often without any motorway connections,
and to ensure they can
still use most of the time for customer
contacts. Every minute of
free time is employed consistently
to explore new industrial regions
and to pay spontaneous calls on
potential customers. This type of
acquisition is certainly one of the
most difficult tasks in the life of a
salesperson, but the staff in Berlin
regard it as part of the recipe for
success.
Good atmosphere
brings success
The Berlin sales team also gets on
very well outside work, and the
excellent internal cooperation is
quickly transferred to the relationship
with the customer. Despite
the hectic nature of their daily
busi ness, the team members also
enjoy a laugh and a joke. Once
customers have been acquired,
they generally remain faithful to
the company for many years. With
this mixture of a laid-back attitude
and professionalism Michael
Bröcker and his team have succeeded
in continuously expanding
the success of their office. Whereas
the only customers in the early
years were end consumers, later
the business also included stainless
steel dealers who enable
many small companies based
in the region to be supplied with
Stappert products from the
“… nature of steel”. “Berlin and
the surrounding area are tough,”
reckons Michael Bröcker, “but
there’s always some thing going on
there, and that helps us to reinvent
our selves each day.” And that with
success, as the development to
date shows.
Expedition – the stages
From Soissons
to the whole country
The small town of Soissons, with its 30,000 inhabitants, is home to the headquarters of TRD Inox.
From here the company sells long products made of stainless steel to France.
The warehause and the administrative building of TRD Inox in Soissons
TRD Inox was founded in Soissons,
50 km northwest of Reims,
the capital of Champagne, in 1987
by the Belgian family Lambrecht,
who had already es tab lished
Cotubel, Noxon and Asadin. The
company was founded as a sales
channel and was the exclusive
The administrative building at the TRDinox location
supplier of welded stainless steel
pipes and fi ttings to the French
retail sector. In the course of time
the product range was expanded
and the customer port folio extended
by end consumers, who
today account for approx. 80 % of
sales. New sales offi ces were also
added, one in Saint Nazaire near
Nantes – in the immediate vicinity
of the largest French ship yard, in
which Queen Mary II was built. In
early 2000 another subsidiary was
founded in Lyon. Today the company
has its headquarters in Soissons
and subsidiaries in Meyzieu,
near Lyon, and in St. Nazaire.
The current warehouse
programme catalogue
Time brings changes
Although the company is relatively
young, TRD Inox has already
expe rienced many changes. Six
years after its foundation, it was
taken over by Marcegaglia before
be ing incorporated into the IMS
Group in 2006 and thus integrated
into Hub France. In 2010 IMS
was then taken over by Jacquet
Metals. TRD Inox was initially labelled
Stainless Tubular Solutions.
In recent years the company’s
product range has changed. Up to
June 2011 above all welded and
seamless stainless steel pipes,
elbows, fl anges and other fi tt ings
were stored. In addition, the company
ATR, which at that time was
also based in Soissons and acted
as a division of TRD Inox, sold a
wide range of welded boiler pipe
segments made of engineering
steel. However, in September
2011 ATR was dissolved and the
warehouse stock was sold.

Diversity ex stock
Today not only pipes and fitt ings,
but also the complete range of
stainless steel long products such
as flat steel, hot-rolled or cold-finished
bars, angles and O-channels,
as well as hollow steel are stored.
This enables large end users, industrial
concerns but also smaller
enterprises to select from the wide
range of products to suit their
projects. In addition to major business
with French trading com-
Expedition – the stages
The modernised offices … … and the extensive storage capacities
panies, the customer focus is on
plant, piping system and boiler
construc ters. A total area of
27,000 m2 is available in Soissons
for the storage of the steel products.
In the adjacent sawing
centre the long products can be
cut to the length the cus tomer requires.
In 2011 TRD Inox realised
a turnover of EUR 22 million for
sales of 3,200 tons of special
steel.
equipped for the
future
Since December 2011 TRD Inox
has belonged to the Stappert organisation
and in the future it will
enrich the “… nature of steel”
under the name Stappert France.
Stefan Müller-Bernhardt and his
team are very ambitious for the
future: the successful result
a chieved last year is to be increased.
The field staff has been
working towards this goal for a
good six months, acquiring new
customers, principally from the
metalworking and engineering industries
in and around Paris, wich
is only around one hour away from
Soissons. A total of 29 employees
support around 3,000 active customers.
One particularly positive
aspect is the high motivation of
the French team and their customer-oriented
flexibility and proximity.
The Stappert organisation‘s
wide variety of products and the
stocks of standard and special
grades complete TRD Inox‘ offer.
A professional basis
The 70,000 m2 site in Soissons
was also revamped. The 250 m2 office premises were renovated in
June 2011, thus providing a professional
basis to master the up-
coming challenges. “When I
started here everything looked a
bit different,” reports Managing
Director Stefan Müller-Bernhardt,
who is responsible not only for
TRD Inox, but also for the other
western companies, such as
Intramet in Belgium, Noxon in the
Netherlands and Trinox in Switzerland.
“In one corner of the warehouse
we discovered three wonderful
vintage cars which my
predecessor had parked there.“
Nowadays such anecdotes just
make Stefan Müller-Bernhardt
smile. Because the future has long
since begun at Stappert France,
and he looks forward to everything
that the future will bring him and
his team.
Expedition – the companions
With precision
to a unique history
usually it is the people who turn a successful company into a really exciting one. This is also the case at Zorn Instruments, which is
currently managed by the fourth generation of an impressive dynasty of craftsmen and is celebrating success around the world with
precision equipment made from stainless steel.
Fourth generation owner:
Bernd Zorn
We are in Stendal, in the heart of
the Altmark, a beautiful region to
the north of Magdeburg which can
look back on 1,000 years of history.
Wilhelm Schließer founded a
mechanical workshop to manufacture
safes here in 1870. Later bicycles,
then sewing machines and
finally testing devices for metals
and plastics were developed
here. Thanks to this specialisation
the “Gerhard Zorn Mechanische
Werkstätten” escaped the expropriation
policy in the GDR. The
Zorn products became successful
exports, which entitled the Zorn
family to the greatest possible
freedom of travel and earned the
socialist state foreign currency.
But the relationship remained
tense. As a privately managed
company Zorn was regarded as
an “enemy of the system”, but
the functionaries were not able to
close their eyes to the company’s
high productivity and success.
On 1st of January 1981 Bernd Zorn
took over the company management
from his father. But before
this he had had quite different
plans.
engineer instead of
hairdresser
The life of a young man often follows
unexpected paths. That was
also the case for Bernd Zorn. Ini -
tially it was planned that he should
become a chemist, but that was
too dull for him. One of his brothers
suggested: “Let the lad become
a hairdresser.” Others
argued he should become a
“coal bearer” or engineer. He
would earn good money and not
have to work too hard. Eventually
Bernd Zorn was trained as an
engineer and was later unfortunately
not able to fully enjoy the
promised money and leisure time,
because he had to survive hard
From raw material to a precision tool … … with the help of state-of-the-art technology
times with his company to bring it
to where it is now. Not to mention
the work which the almost 60year-old
still puts in today. He gets
up each day at 4:45am, and is
generally the first person to arrive
at the company at 5:45am. He is
often also the last to leave.
Gearing the company
for the future
The fall of the Berlin Wall was not
really a stroke of luck for Bernd
Zorn and Zorn Instruments. Zorn
lost the monopoly which it had
enjoyed in many socialist states.
Other competitors moved into
these markets. At the same time
many customers from the West –
to whom business relationships
had existed for many years – used
the political change to reduce
prices. The GDR regime had also
exploited the company and loaded
it with debts. All in all the
prospects were not rosy. But
Bernd Zorn is not a person who

A Zorn deflectometer in use in the
field
is easily dispirited.
He viewed the crisis as an opportunity
and a chance to gear the
company to a new future. He
broke away from many custom ers
and concentrated on an almost
impossible undertaking: He
wanted his independent company
to succeed against the West
German engineering industry.
The key to this was an invention
which was almost pure geni-
Bernd Zorn and his Works Manager Ronald Könnecke
Expedition – the companions
us and today is employed in 100
countries worldwide: deflectometers
for earth work, underground
engineering and road and rail construction.
Precision leads to
success
Deflectometers are required for
dynamic plate bearing tests.
These are used to determine the
bearing capability and compression
of soil and rock. Measurement
is urgently required before,
for instance, roads are constructed
or buildings can be erected on a
piece of land. The device is easy
to operate and supplies the most
precise measurement data on any
construction site within a few
minutes. These test devices from
Zorn are extremely popular around
the world, as a result of which
65% of Zorn Instruments’ total
sales is based on exports.
“Export for me has always meant
freedom,” explains Bernd Zorn,
who has travelled some 300,000
kilometres on his journeys round
the globe, visited 140 countries
and established countless contacts
in the process. From Prince
Hassan of Jordan, to Fidel Castro,
through to Roman Herzog – Bernd
Zorn has gotten to know them
all in person and, with his open,
straightforward manner, he filled
them with enthusiasm for himself
and his company.
Medical engineering
complements the
range
A second sector in which the precision
of the company from
Stendal is highly esteemed is
medical engineering. In the last
ten years the company has earned
an outstanding reputation for
itself in this sector and does not
rest on its laurels: it is continuously
enhancing its products. In particular
in medical engineering the
most stringent requirements apply
for the cleanliness of the equipment
and the materials used. Consequently
Zorn Instruments relies
here on products from Stappert’s
“… nature of steel”, primarily
on bars made from the grades
1.4301, 1.4057, 1.4542 and
1.4404, but sometimes also on
welded and seamless pipes or
hollow steel made from 1.4301
and 1.4541 and angles made from
1.4301.
Work as a calling
For Bernd Zorn his dedication
to the company is more a calling
than work. And he wants to continue
as long as possible. He finds
his role models for this in his own
family, because his great grandfather
worked until he was 94, his
grandfather until he was 87, and
his father until he was 84. But the
40 or so employees also display
tremendous commitment to the
company. And that with success,
as can be seen in the workload on
the plant alone. When the company
moved into its new halls in
2001, nobody really knew what to
do with all the space. Today full
use is made of the capacity with
state-of-the-art CNC machines
filling every square metre. An extension
is being planned.
Zorn Instruments – a company
with an impressive history. And
living proof that quality and precision
“made in Germany” enjoy
great esteem worldwide.
This is one of a series of company
portraits to have been
published in “expedition”,
around the world
The “Stainless Steel World Conference & expo” in Maastricht is becoming increasingly popular. 234 companies from around the globe
were represented here in order to present their products. Stappert also took advantage of this occasion to stage a successful presentation.
Martina Stöver and her team
Always well-visited: The Stappert exhibition booth …
Last year the seventh Stainless
Steel took place in Maastricht
from 29th of November to 1st of
December. In the meantime the
trade fair and conference has become
a fixed date in the calendar
of the international steel industry.
This is demonstrated in particular
by the constantly increasing number
of exhibitors and the international
visitors. This year, for example,
guests from Japan, Israel
and even India visited the Stappert
booth. “I am very pleased that so
many visitors were willing to undertake
such a long journey to
witness the innovations on the
steel market at first hand,” commented
a pleased Martina Stöver,
Head of Export at Stappert.
De spite the negative economic
… from visitors from all around the world
developments in the eurozone,
the customers demonstrated an
extremely positive attitude towards
2012 and the questions
they asked at the booth focused
above all on special grades such
as the duplex steels 1.4410 and
1.4501. There were also in quiries
regarding the fittings programme.
In particular many questions were
asked about the grade 1.4539,
which Stappert stocks for anything
from screws through to
concentric reductions. After a
relaxed dinner with guests from
around the world on the first
evening of the fair and extremely
promising inquiries, Martina
Stöver has set her sights firmly on
parti cipating again in 2013.

Innovations at TUBE
From 26 th to 30 th of March the tube industry will meet at the world’s leading trade fair “Tube” in Düsseldorf. This year Stappert will
focus on duplex and super duplex grades and an inspirational innovation from the “renewable energies” sector.
Stappert … the natur e of steel
“Welcome to the Solar Bar” is
Stappert’s motto this year at the
fair booth, because in the midst
of the hustle and bustle of the
fair the company will create a feel
good oasis for the visitors where it
will present the variety of stainless
steel products from the “… nature
of steel”. One focus will be on the
pipes and fi ttings made of the
grades 1.4462 and 1.4539. These
Stappert continued a muchloved tradition and invited its customers to a visit to the Cannstatter Wasen
festival. In splendid autumn weather they enjoyed a day and evening which brought them closer.
The Swabian counterpart to the
Bavarian Oktoberfest began in
Stuttgart on 23rd of Steptember.
Thanks to the golden autumn, the
Cannstatter Wasen once again
attracted several million visitors
to the Neckarpark in Stuttgart.
Centred around the fruit column,
the historical symbol of the harvest
festival, more than 320 fairground
operators, publicans and market
traders offered their wide range of
wares to ensure that a good mood
prevailed for the two weeks of the
festival.
of services ranging from cutting
right through to qua lity checks.
That the extensive product range
offered by Stappert inspires genuine
innovations is illustrated by
an example from the “renewable
energies” sector.
Stappert Spezial-Stahl Handel
Stappert also spent one day there
with its customers. Because the
guests came from almost all over
Germany, their journey by train was
organised so that some met at the
main station in Frankfurt. From
there they travelled together by
ICE to Stuttgart. A special box
was reserved for some 80 visitors
from Weil der Stadt, Ulm, Freiburg,
Mannheim, Hanover, Leipzig and
beer tent on 7th of October, and a
great time was had by all. Natur ally
rustic environment was used
GmbH will present solar power at
its booth: The company markets
the material for stainless roof substructures
for solar panels. Engineers
who have concentrated on
the use of re newable energies for
many years will present the application
of these piping systems.
The benefi ts of these systems lie
on the one hand in a more positive
ecological balance as aluminium
requires more energy to produce
than stainless steel. On the other
hand the use of stain less steel offers
the option of unmixed design,
which provides greater stability,
because aluminium structures are
frequently fas tened using stainless
steel screws. Two grades are thus
used together which have different
thermal characteristics and this
can lead to instability. Another ad-
to conduct extensive dis cussions
and establish contacts. Small
groups also used various fairground
rides to fi nd a cooling
Afterwards the guests were taken
by bus to the Amber Hotel Leonberg,
where rooms were reserved
for them, in order to round off the
day and gather energy for their return
journeys. Following breakfast
the next morning, everybody set
off for home, hoping that this great
tradition will be continued.
vantage is the load-bearing capacity
of the structure. New brackets
have been developed for this purpose
– a plug-in system made of
stainless steel. Here stainless
circular tubes are used as connecting
elements for the structure,
which itself consists of hollow
rectangular sections. This system
simplifi es installation and increases
stability. The pipes required
are supplied by Stappert.
Anybody who wishes to see this
innovation close up and at the
same time wishes to relax from
the stress of the trade fair at our
Fittings Day
in Niederaula
10
Expedition – the equipment
On 21 st of October last year Stappert celebrated its first Fittings Day at the Niederaula site. Some
50 customers from all over Germany were pleased to accept the invitation and experienced some
veritable “autumn magic”.
Site of the Fittings Day: the Niederaula warehouse The decoration highlighted the wonderful atmosphere
The occasion for this unusual
action was the restocking of the
extensive range of fittings in the
Niederaula warehouse. Thanks to
this, customers can now again
obtain the perfect combination
of pipes, fittings, bars and sections
directly from a single source,
namely from the Stappert sales
office responsible for them. That
sales can provide what it pro mises
at all times was demon strated impressively
on the Fittings Day,
because in Nieder aula the guests
experienced at first hand the wide
range of options which a state-of-
the-art Stappert warehouse offers.
Discovering variety
The celebration took place in an
appropriately decorated marquee
which had been erected on the
Niederaula site for this occasion.
The Product Manager of the tube,
pipe and fittings segment, Bernd
Gerdes, welcomed the guests
and ensured everyone was in the
right mood for the day’s programme.
After enjoy ing coffee and cake
the guests then set off on a voyage
of discovery through the various
ware house areas. In small groups
they obtained a close-up view of
the bar warehouse, the pipe and
fittings warehouse, the external
warehouse for large pipes, and the
machine hall for surface refinement.
At each stage it was possible
to experience the entire variety
of Stappert‘s “… nature of steel”,
and the guests showed they were
profoundly impressed by the capa-
cities, product range and services –
from sawing to refining through to
quality checks.
exchanging
experiences
Following this expedition, all the
guests were invited to an evening
in the marquee where they had the
opportunity to talk to each other.
The caringly designed, autumnal
decoration and the heated barbecue
area created a cosy atmosphere.
As they enjoyed culinary
delights from the barbecue, bread
on a stick and a large selection of
cocktails the guests were able to
talk about what they had experienced,
and individual customer
requirements were discussed.
The Fittings Day was a total
success for the guests who had
travelled to it and consequently
also for Stappert. It is planned to
repeat it next year.
The guests took the opportunity to view the fittings warehouse

Expedition – the equipment
The perfect solution for the
processing industry
When chemical products are manufactured, plants are subjected to extreme stress. High temperatures and the corrosiveness of the
materials which need to be processed place the most stringent demands on the materials used to build the plants. It is precisely here
that Stappert, with its wide range of pipes and fittings made of special grades, is the ideal partner.
Processing industry plant
The “… nature of steel” offers a
wide variety of highly corrosionresistant
steels, starting with the
duplex and super duplex steels
1.4462 and 1.4501 and also
1.4539, through to the heat-re -
sist ant steel 1.4841. But variety
is not everything. Because if installa
tion – regardless of whether
it takes place on an external construction
site or in the workshop –
needs to be performed without
great delay, Stappert ensures
that the material required is supplied
rapidly and reliably. In particular
when repairs are urgent, a
high level of delivery reliability is
essential, because downtimes
often cost six-digit sums each day.
Stappert guarantees that pipes and
fittings are de livered to the required
site by truck courier, air freight
or even by taxi from the central
pipe warehouse in Niederaula.
Many advanced
services
Providing services is a matter of
course for Stappert. For example,
thick-walled pipes made from special
grades are equipped with weld
preparation according to DIN EN
ISO 9692-1 or with a conical external
pipe thread. Mechanical
adaptation of the wall thickness
(S dimensions) according to the
DIN EN or ASTM standard for, for
instance, welding neck flanges is
naturally also provided. A small
overview on the extensive range on
services offered for plant construction
is shown in the table
below. But if you wish for detailed
Stappert offers the perfect solution for every construction project
information and an individual solution
for your requirements, please
