I N D I A N A F E V E R INDIANA FEVER BRING IT HOME! 34 2011 FEVER NOTEBOOK – WNBA PLAYOFFS BACK TO THE PLAYOFFS Returning to the WNBA Playoffs for a seventh consecutive season in 2011, and for the eighth time in the franchise’s 12year history, the Indiana Fever hopes for a return to the WNBA Finals where it fell to the Phoenix Mercury in a dramatic five-game series in 2009. Indiana enters the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2011 where it meets the New York Liberty in a rematch of last year’s first-round series. The Libs dispatched the Fever 2-1 in that series, with N.Y. boasting a No. 2 seed and home-court advantage over the No. 3 seed Fever. Roles are reversed in 2011 with the top-seeded Fever hosting No. 4 New York. It is the second time in three years that Indiana has entered the playoffs as a No. 1 seed, winning the East’s regular season crown in both 2009 and 2011. 2002 16-16 No. 4 lost to NY in ESF 2005 21-13 No. 2 lost to Conn. in EF 2006 21-13 No. 3 lost to Detroit in ESF 2007 21-13 No. 2 lost to Detroit in EF 2008 17-17 No. 4 lost to Detroit in ESF 2009 22-12 No. 1 lost to Phoenix in WNBA Finals 2010 21-13 No. 3 lost to New York in ESF 2011 21-13 No. 1 TRUTH IN SEEDING Indiana has participated in 11 playoff series during its seven previous WNBA Playoffs seasons, and in all11 series, the top seed has advanced. The Fever has owned the top seed and home-court advantage in 4 of 11 series and advanced each time. And in each of the seven that Indiana has been the lower seed, including last year’s series with the Liberty, the Fever has fallen. EIGHT OF LAST TEN Since losing its only home game in both the 2005 and 2006 postseasons, the Fever has lost just two of its last 10 playoff games at Conseco Fieldhouse. HOME SWEET HOME Having lost its finale to the Atlanta Dream, 9/11, the Fever fell one win short of tying its best record at home, which it set in 2005 and matched in 2009. With its 13 home wins in 2011, Indiana won at least 10 home games for the 10th consecutive season. Since totaling 12 combined home wins in its first two seasons (2000 & 2001), the Fever has won 119 of 169 (.704) regular season games at Conseco Fieldhouse. 20-WIN SEASONS The Fever has joined the Los Angeles Sparks (1999-06) as the only teams ever to record six 20-win seasons in a 7-year span. SEVEN IN A ROW Indiana's seven-year run of reaching the postseason is the third longest in league history, and is the longest active streak in the Eastern Conference. Seattle qualified for its record-tying eighth straight playoff berth in 2011. Indiana enters the 2011 postseason having lost 5 of 7 to end the regular season – after reeling off wins in 8 of 9 games following the All-Star Break. In 2010, the Fever had won five straight to move into first place with a week remaining, but promptly dropped three in-arow to finish third. In 2009, Indiana clinched an early postseason berth before dropping 5 of 7 to close the regular season – only to rebound and win four of its next five to advance to the Finals. PLAYOFF-TESTED Ten of the Fever’s 11 players have appeared in the playoffs before, and nine have tasted at least the conference finals. Only rookie Jeanette Pohlen has not qualified for previous playoff action. Only Tangela Smith has previously won a WNBA title, winning a pair with the Phoenix Mercury in 2007 and 2009 – the latter at Indiana’s expense. Smith takes part in her ninth WNBA Playoffs. She has reached the conference finals six times and the Finals twice. Katie Douglas has reached the Finals on three occasions though still is in search of her first title.
