FeverBasketball.com June 2, 2011 Versatility is key word for 2011 Fever By Tom Rietmann Tamika Catchings finds it painful to think about the Indiana Fever's 2010 season. “Last year was definitely very disappointing, probably the most disappointing of all the seasons I've been here,” the Fever's 11thyear forward said. In 2010, Indiana concluded with a 21-13 regular-season record and a first-round elimination from the WNBA Playoffs. The finish left an especially bitter taste because it came on the heels of the team's push to the WNBA Finals in 2009. Catchings wanted more. Indeed, she expected more. But now comes 2011, a fresh start. Catchings and her teammates are determined to keep last year in their rear-view mirror and leap on their new opportunity, beginning with the season opener against visiting Chicago on Saturday night. But they know, too, that returning to the league finals in a young and vibrant WNBA will be no easy task. Still, returning to those finals -- as well as winning there -- remains the Fever's No. 1 goal. “As long as we get on the same page, we're going to continue to jell and generate chemistry,” said Indiana guard Katie Douglas. “I think great things can be made with this team this year.” Four Fever starters, including Catchings and Douglas, are older than 30. The age issue comes up in every question-and-answer session with the media. It happened again this week after the Indiana team made its final cutdown to 11 players and began work on the Chicago game. Dunn was asked if the “window” to a title is closing. “I think it's open because of the type of players we have,” the coach said. “I don't think there's any doubt that there's a sense of urgency because we have the four players over 30. “But we're not talking about championships right now. What we're talking about is getting better every day, getting more comfortable, defending a little better, getting another free throw, getting another offensive rebound. (It's) just doing the little things better. Then the big things can happen.” Chicago will arrive at Conseco Fieldhouse with a team that finished 14-20 in 2010. Indiana went 5-0 against Chicago last season and would like to jump-start 2011 with another victory. “It's not a marathon,” Dunn said about the 34-game WNBA schedule. “It's not like the NBA where you've got so many games that you can get behind and catch up. It's a sprint. You really have to come out of the gates … at full sprint.” Five new faces on the 11-woman roster provide the Fever with some versatility. Here's how Dunn breaks down the sectors: BACKCOURT: Briann January will be the starter at point guard with Douglas at shooting guard. Dunn said Erin Phillips, the team's new acquisition from Australia, is “going to give us strength, defense, the ability to score and toughness off the bench at the 2 (shooting guard.). And she'll play some minutes at the 1 (point guard).” Shavonte Zellous will come off the bench to play both shooting guard and small forward. Dunn said Zellous is “high energy, physical and gets to the free throw line, per minutes played, probably better than anybody.” Rookie Jeanette Pohlen is in the mix, too. “If we need a shooter,” Dunn said, “we might put Pohlen in instead of Zellous because of her ability to shoot the 3. If we need rebounds, with somebody attacking and defending tough, we might put in Zellous. We have that versatility there.” FRONTCOURT: Catchings is the starter at small forward, with Tangela Smith at power forward. Shyra Ely could see playing time at both forward positions. Jessica Davenport will back up starting center Tammy Sutton-Brown and likely see time as a forward. Also, in the final preseason game, the Fever gave fans a sneak preview of how the team might occasionally play Catchings -- at power forward. “There are times when the things we run are really a four-guard offense,” Dunn said. “And I think Catch creates some serious mismatches for people when she goes to the 4 (power forward).” BENCH: Zellous, Ely, Davenport, Phillips and Pohlen will likely get plenty of minutes. But the X-factor off the bench could turn out to be 5-2 guard Shannon Bobbitt. “She's kind of the Energizer Bunny,” Dunn said. “If we need a lift, if we need somebody to pick up the tempo a bit, I won't hesitate to use her. Right now, we've kept her because we feel like she's a great 11th man. She plays hard, makes people better, and she's high energy.” OPEN PRACTICE AT PERRY MERIDIAN The Fever will hold an open practice at 6 p.m. Thursday (June 2) at Perry Meridian High School. Tickets are $15, with proceeds benefiting various charities. Admission also includes a complimentary ticket to a Fever home game in June. Fever guard Katie Douglas is a graduate of Perry Meridian.

We’re a city built on sports of all kinds, from big, one-day events like the Greatest Spectacle in Racing and the pending 2012 Superbowl to things like world championship swimming and diving meets and the men’s and women’s Big Ten Basketball Tournaments. It seems like Indy is always hosting something, but there are also local sports teams that bring in fans year round. The Colts, Pacers, Indians, Ice and so on entertain local and visiting fans, but now it’s time for the Indiana Fever to shine. For the past 11 seasons, the Fever have brought entertainment to the city including a 2009 run to the WNBA finals and playoff berths in seven of those years. For their 12 th season, All-Stars Tamika Catchings and Katie Douglas look to finally capture that elusive WNBA title – and it all begins on Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse. The Fever will open their season against the Chicago Sky, which means Chicagoans will once again be headed to Indianapolis. While Indy fans will be hoping for a different result than the Eastern Conference NBA first-round matchup between the Pacers and the Bulls, all fans will need some things to do while they’re downtown, in addition to tickets. Indianapolis hotels are abundant and navigating the city is easy thanks to a number of sky walks, so making it from your hotel room to your destination will be easy. For some entertainment, try the Slippery Noodle- they have live blues music every weekend. Food options abound, but a relative newcomer to the scene is the Tavern on South. For some good exercise and shopping, take in Circle Centre Mall, a downtown mainstay for many years. No matter what you do, you’re bound to have a good time.
