Indianapolis Star September 7, 2011 Fever claim 1st in East with a couple of games to spare By David Woods The Indiana Fever lost another point guard to injury and have a couple of inconsequential games left on the schedule. Yet all things considered, Wednesday was a satisfying night at Conseco Fieldhouse. The Fever secured the No. 1 seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs, pulling away in the fourth quarter to beat the Washington Mystics 87-69. The Fever (21-11) will have home-court advantage in a bid to reach the WNBA Finals for a second time in three years. They have never won a playoff series without that edge. The Fever own a tiebreaker over Connecticut (20-13) if the teams share first in the 34-game season. "I think it's a great situation to be in, to be quite honest," said Katie Douglas, who led the Fever with 21 points. "I think last year was a terrible situation to be in. Every game, every second mattered. Everybody else mattered." The Fever lost the final three games last season and plunged from first to third. Then they lost to New York 2-1 in an opening bestof-three playoff series. Point guard Erin Phillips was helped off the court late in Wednesday's game after spraining her left ankle. She will stay in Indianapolis for treatment rather than travel to New York for Friday's game. However, a Fever spokesman said Phillips is expected to be ready for the playoffs, which open Sept. 15. The Fever lost point guard Briann January to a torn anterior cruciate ligament June 28. In Phillips' absence, coach Lin Dunn said, the point would be shared by Shannon Bobbitt, Douglas and forward Tamika Catchings. "Catch has always wanted to be a point forward," Dunn said. Catchings enhanced her Most Valuable Player credentials with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Douglas' 21 points were her most in 18 games (since June 28), and she added four rebounds and five assists. Perhaps more encouraging were the season-high 15 points by center Tammy Sutton-Brown, who also had seven rebounds and five blocked shots. WNBA analysts, as well as the players themselves, say the Fever must have inside scoring to be a factor in the playoffs. Sutton- Brown and backup center Jessica Davenport shot a collective 9-of- 14. "I'm at the point where, in my 11th season, I just want that ring," Sutton-Brown said. The Fever blew leads of 13 points in the second quarter and 15 in the third before completing a 5-0 season sweep of the Mystics (6- 27). The Fever opened the third quarter on a 20-4 run. The Fever close the season at home Sunday against Atlanta (19- 14). Dunn said the Fever must continue winning because that could influence home-court advantage if West leader Minnesota (25-7) doesn't reach the WNBA Finals. "It's a hard thing to juggle," Douglas said, "but we definitely need to stay sharp and stay in rhythm." Etc. Fever F Shyra Ely (Ben Davis) came off the bench and scored seven points in the closing 31/2 minutes . . . Fever F Tangela Smith scored seven points and needs 12 to become the eighth player in WNBA history to reach 5,000.
