Recreation and Sports Services 2006-2007 Annual Report Supplement
Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Results
SLO Measure & Data Collection
The survey consists of 24 Likert scales, ranging low to high proficiency from 1 to 8, each of
which refers to a rubric detailing specific student learning outcomes. A self-assessment was
administered to 34 student employees in the Fall of 2006 because of their supervisory positions
or high involvement in a program area. Each student was also assessed by their supervisor. 29
employees were assessed in the Spring of 07, including 11 repeats from the Fall. The survey took
approximately 10 minutes to complete. Questions 21 - 23 were left blank by most participants
because the corresponding SLOs don’t apply to their program area, so results at this time will
exclude data from these questions. “E” and “s” refer to employee-reported scores and supervisorreported
scores respectively, and “SLO” refers to employee-reported scores categorized into
specific SLOs. SLO8, SLO9, and SLO10 aren’t reported since they are calculated from questions
19-23.
Results & Discussion
Overall Performance
Employees and supervisors reported an overall level of performance between proficient and
advanced for all SLOs (employee mean score in spring = 6.58, supervisor mean score in spring =
6.43). On average performance increased slightly from fall to spring (employee mean score
change = .21, supervisor mean score change = .29).
Points of Merit
Learned Through Recreation*. Supervisors reported employees making a connection between
their current recreation positions and future work as advanced (s24 mean = 6.80, s16 mean =
6.91), and also showed the largest improvement from Fall to Spring (s24 mean difference =
1.20).
Respect*. “Respect” was reported at an advanced level of performance from both employee (e10
mean = 7.10) and overall scores (10 total mean = 6.80).
Safety Skills*. Employees and supervisors reported “safety skills” as advanced (e18 mean = 6.64,
s18 mean = 7.07).
Points for Improvement
Written Communication*. “Written communication” had the overall lowest average score,
although this is still at the proficient level (4 total mean = 6.09).
Verbal Communication. Supervisors and employees reported low levels of performance for
“verbal communication, although this is still at the proficient level (spring s5 mean = 6.07, fall
e5 mean = 6.06).
Non-Verbal Communication. Employees reported “non-verbal communication” as the lowest
level of performance, although this is still at the proficient level (spring e6 mean = 5.97, fall e6
mean = 6.06).
*These points remain qualitatively the same as indicated in last spring’s assessment results.
