Principles of life…
1996 was the year that changed his life completely. Mr Ho accepted an
offer with Nexnews Berhad as Editor-in-Chief, the publishing company
for The Edge and The Sun Newspapers. It was indeed intriguing, to
hold such a respected and responsible position with one of Malaysia’s
widely read newspapers. Scary though, but yet physically possible, as
said by this intellectual being, “one should be good at what he or she
does, by working hard to achieve your goals with the right attitude.
Believing in what you do and to do it with honesty and integrity
would definitely accelerate one to limitless opportunities as trust is
very important in the media business”.
Determination and persistence…
Struggle was a definite when he took on this responsibility to build
The Edge into a respected must read publication for the business
and corporate community was indeed a milestone. When they began
12 years back, no one gave them a chance to shine, however, with
determination, they carried on knowing that they believed in the
publication and delivered a publication that the market needed and
wanted, and success came eventually.
Similarly, his struggle continues with The Sun at the moment, by
turning it into a free newspaper. Many people including so-called
media experts discouraged this move and predicted that they
would not last more than a year. This was very sad to Mr Ho and all at
Nexnews Berhad, however, it has already been four years and The Sun
circulates 230,000 copies a day and has a very wide following because
of its great content as well as the “telling it as it is” commentaries.
People look forward to this section of the newspapers as they yearn
for the truth. Giving people the truth is necessary according to Mr Ho,
that is why talented people are necessary for the industry and more
importantly, they must have the passion for what they do. Integrity is
of course central because readers have to trust what is reported and
said.
Life at serenity…
Having reached his goal, aside the struggle and hurdles that needed
to be crossed in his career path, Mr Ho also provides for a lovely
wife, Tan Puay Lin and his young and energetic daughters, Ho Ching
Ling, Ho Su Yuen and Ho Su Ling. He chose Tropicana Golf & Country
Resort as a living ground for his family as he believes that security is
necessary in case of an emergency. Being a gated township, Tropicana
was his first choice. Furthermore, having a golf course at literally the
foot of his doorstep added to his decision, as he is indeed a golf
enthusiast.
His beautiful home was decorated by his wife and him, has to be seen
for one to appreciate. Its cosy decorations include a reading hall that
is piled with books, magazines and of course, his newspapers. The hall
overlooks a well-maintained garden that includes a waterfall, with
water sounds that soothe the mind and relax the nerves. The other
side of his living hall is filled with a collection of golf balls and caps,
another of his passions.
Mr Ho also speaks proudly of his wife’s talents. Most of the walls in
their lovely home are decorated with water-colour paintings made
by his counterpart. She enjoys painting and most of her inspirations
are from old buildings and groups of people as she originates from
Penang.
The Tropicana Experience…
Aside from their welcoming home, where Mr Ho and his family enjoy
spending most of their free time, they also enjoy the facilities at the
club. The golf course is his cup of tea, although it is difficult to get
much free time to make it a regular occurrence, having to assure good
publications are out daily. However, his wife and kids do make use of
the Olympic-sized swimming pools, the well-equipped library and of
course the numerous eateries at the clubhouse. What better place to
live in than one that has everything, under one huge roof.
Being the passionate man that he is, he believes that “life should be
lived to the fullest” as everyone only lives once. Keep an open mind
and attitude and you will be able to achieve what you believe. Live
and let live, however do not try to impose your beliefs on others and
do not hurt others. Exclusive words of wisdom from this honoured
